DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say drought conditions have slightly improved in the state. The state Department of Natural Resources says in a Thursday report that Iowa received a little more than an inch of rainfall in November. That’s half of its normal rainfall during that month.
But the state’s area of exceptional drought and other categories of drought intensity have slightly dropped. Officials say they expect little or no additional groundwater recharge before spring because frost will enter the soil with the approaching winter.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – An ad for a fast food restaurant back in the mid 1980’s asked the question “Where’s the Beef?” These days, people in the Midwest are asking, “Where’s the snow?” Cities all across the region are setting records for the lack of the white stuff. Lincoln, NE, is seeing its 297th day in a row without measurable snow. The former record was 295 snow-free days in 2004.
The National Weather Service says the 285 snowless days as of Wednesday in Omaha breaks the record 284 days that ended Dec. 30, 2006. The Des Moines, Iowa, record of 277 days set in 1889 is being matched today (Thursday). Elsewhere in the Midwest, Chicago and Milwaukee have yet to have their first measurable snow of the season.
But good news may be ahead for winter wonderland fans: The service says snow is in the forecasts for Saturday night or Sunday in Nebraska and Iowa, the next day in Chicago.

October broke a string of drier than normal months, but State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says the wet trend didn’t last long as November turned dry again. “Statewide average precipitation was just a little bit over an inch — one-point-seven inches to be exact,” Hillaker says. “And that’s basically just a little bit better than half of what’s normal for the month of November. And definitely not what we want to be seeing given the dry weather we’ve already had here in 20012.”
In Atlantic, we received Six-tenths of an inch of precipitation in November, which was .83” below normal. Hillaker says only a few areas of the state saw better than average precipitation. “Kind of along a line from south-central up into northeast Iowa,” Hillaker says. But he says the northwest half of the state was especially dry, with some areas seeing only about three-tenths of an inch of rain.
The air was drier and warmer in November. “The month is going to end up being about two-and-a-half degrees warmer than normal, and we’re actually split fairly evenly as far as cooler and warmer than usual days. But the half that were warmer, some of them were way warmer than normal, and so the month as a whole is going to be a little big on the warm side for November, but nothing unusual as far as weather rankings go,” according to Hillaker.
The average high for the month in Atlantic was 53-degrees, which was 5-degrees warmer than normal. The average low was 27, which was 1-degree warmer than normal. The warmest day was Nov. 10th, when Atlantic reached 75-degrees. The coolest high for the month was 30-degrees on the 20th. That same date saw the coldest low, at 6-degrees above zero. The warmest temperature for the month in Iowa was 79 degrees on November 10 at Little Sioux in Harrison County, while Stanley in Buchanan County hit five degrees for the low on November 27th.

The National Weather Service says Iowa experienced unseasonably warm temperatures on Monday, as southwesterly winds increased ahead of an approaching cold front. Many locations broke their daily high temperatures, and several tied their records for the highest temperature ever recorded on that date, in December. Among the locations where the high was tied, was in Atlantic, where we hit 63-degrees at 11-a.m., here at the KJAN studios, the Official NWS reporting site for Atlantic. Our high tied the record first set 50-years ago (1962). Today’s predicted high of 58 would fall about 8-degrees shy of tying the record for December 4th.
High temperatures Monday ranged from 62-degrees in Omaha to 72 in Burlington. Des Moines topped out at 69-degrees, which tied the record set in 1984. The highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Iowa during the month of December is 74-degrees in Thurman, on Dec. 6th, 1939, a day on which many areas of western Iowa established December warmth records that still stand today. On that date, Atlantic hit 69 degrees.
