Summer months continue dry, warmer pattern under La Nina influence

News, Weather

September 1st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – August continued the summer weather pattern that Iowa and the Midwest have been stuck in now for some time. State Climatologist, Justin Glisan, says this pattern includes warmer conditions.

It was also drier, with rainfall averaging three-point-five inches in August.

Glisan says the combined numbers for the three summer months this year are very similar to 2020 and 2021.

He says June, July, and August, of this year, continued the drier trend.

Glisan says the drought conditions this year are NOT as bad as they were for the three summer months last year. He says the La Nina weather pattern is behind the warmer, drier summers.

He says that could lead to a warmer winter, but it’s too early to tell that.

August 2022 weather stats for Atlantic

News, Weather

September 1st, 2022 by admin

(Atlantic, Iowa) –  The month of August here in Atlantic was a little on the warm side for average high and very dry for precipitation. The normal average high for August is 83 degrees and this year we averaged at 86.4 degrees for the month. The average low is typically 61 degrees and this year we averaged a low of 59.5 degrees for the low.

It has been pretty evident that we’ve been stuck in a dry spell for the last two months and we once again fell woefully short of average rainfall. Rainfall typically amounts to 3.88-inches, but this year we only managed to get 1.96 inches of rain which did turn out to be 0.7″ more than July.

Looking ahead to the month of September the average high is 77 and the average low is 50. Rainfall in September typically amounts to 3.45 inches. Check back on October 1st to see how our weather fared in September.

Monsoon in the SW could be why Iowa is having a long-term drought

Ag/Outdoor, News, Weather

August 29th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Monsoon isn’t a term we hear often in Iowa, but that may be what’s at least partly responsible for our prolonged drought conditions. Heavy rain in the southwestern U-S can draw moisture away from the Northern Plains. Meteorologist Doug Kluck, the climate services director for the National Weather Service Central Region, says that pattern has been spinning away for the past several weeks.

While large portions of Iowa have remained in drought for months, Kluck says long-term weather patterns have been moving more precipitation into the central parts of the country.

Kluck says with another La Nina possible, there is no guarantee that Southwestern moisture will continue.

Predictions are calling for a third year of La Nina, which could lead to a colder-than-normal winter across the Northern Plains.

Wind and heavy rain pummel parts of western/central Iowa Saturday night

News, Weather

August 28th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Fierce winds and heavy rain blew through parts of western and central Iowa, Saturday evening and night, causing a power outage for part of Atlantic, as tree limbs broke and fell on power lines. As with previous Derecho-type winds, trees were left shredded in some areas, especially in downtown Atlantic, where KJAN’s Lori Murphy snapped some pictures of the damage. (See photo’s, click on image to enlarge). Winds gusting up to 55-miles per hour caused tree damage in Red Oak at around 6:30-p.m.

We received .66″ of rain between 5:30-and 6-p.m. Saturday, in Atlantic. Other rainfall amounts include:

  • In Union County, anywhere from 2.25 to 2.75 inches of rain fell between Cromwell and Creston
  • More than 4-inches fell two-miles west of Earlham, in Madison County.
  • 2.22 to 3.54 inches fell across Dallas County.

Also: One-inch diameter hail fell near Grinnell, in Poweshiek County; four-inches of rain fell in Story County, near Gilbert.

Thus far, there have been no reports of injuries.
