THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL IOWA…SOUTH CENTRAL IOWA…SOUTHWEST IOWA AND WEST CENTRAL IOWA…UNTIL 10 AM CDT SUNDAY

ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN ARE POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT. THE GROUND IS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE HEAVY RAINFALL EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. ANY ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAINFALL MAY PRODUCE FLASH FLOODING. THE THE AREAS WHICH RECEIVED HEAVY RAIN EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING ARE OF MOST CONCERN.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 173 IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 500 AM CDT

FOR THE FOLLOWING  IOWA COUNTIES:: FREMONT HARRISON MILLS MONONA MONTGOMERY PAGE POTTAWATTAMIE SHELBY WOODBURY.

HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER…THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH…AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS. THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 50 STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES WEST OF NORFOLK NEBRASKA TO 40 MILES EAST OF OMAHA NEBRASKA. F

REMEMBER…A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

2nd and Elm, access drive to Akin Bldg Center

Some streets of Atlantic were turned into miniature rivers this evening, following heavy rains that poured for over an hour. KJAN News Director Ric Hanson was out and about and took some pictures for you to view.

Street flooding was observed by Ric at 7th and Walnut, 10th and Linn, 2nd & 3rd Streets and Elm, in Atlantic.

  NORTHWESTERN CASS COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST IOWA...

* UNTIL 1000 PM CDT

* AT 658 PM CDT...LAW ENFORCEMENT REPORTED FLASH FLOODING IN
ATLANTIC. THE FLASH FLOODING WAS CAUSED BY THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING
VERY HEAVY RAIN.  THE STORMS HAD MOVED OUT OF THE WARNED AREA BUT
ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE.

…THUNDERSTORMS WILL PRODUCE BRIEF AND INTENSE HEAVY RAINFALL…

IN ADDITION TO THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT THIS EVENING…THE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE A HISTORY OF PRODUCING BRIEF…AND INTENSE…HEAVYRAINFALL. IN THE MOST EXTREME CASES…TWO TO TWO AND HALF INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR.

THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING…THE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCE ADDITIONAL INTENSE AND BRIEF HEAVY RAIN. THE HEAVY RAIN WILL LIKELY PRODUCE LOCAL URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING. THE URBAN FLOODING WILL CAUSE LOCAL TRAVEL PROBLEMS. IF THE STORMS TEND TO TRAIN OVER THE SAME AREA…FLASH FLOODING WILL BE POSSIBLE AND WARNINGS WILL NEED TO BE ISSUED. AT 609 PM CDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS INDICATED A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN EXCESS OF 75 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 21 MILES SOUTHEAST OF MACEDONIA TO STANTON…OR ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 49 MILES SOUTHEAST OF OMAHA TO 60 MILES NORTHWEST OF STANBERRY…MOVING NORTHEAST AT 50 MPH.
