THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN OMAHA/VALLEY HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR A MIX OF LIGHT FREEZING RAIN…LIGHT SNOW… AND LIGHT SLEET WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO 8 AM CST MONDAY.

* TIMING…LIGHT FREEZING DRIZZLE MAY DEVELOP THIS EVENING WITH
LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AND LIGHT SNOW AND SLEET LATER TONIGHT AND
EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

* SNOW/ICE ACCUMULATIONS…ICE ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD BE A TRACE TO
A TENTH OF AN INCH. MOST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD RANGE FROM A
TRACE TO AN INCH…HOWEVER THERE MAY BE SOME LOCALIZED 1 TO 2
INCH AMOUNTS.

* MAIN IMPACT…ROADS AND UNTREATED SURFACES MAY BECOME ICY
IMPACTING TRAVEL LATER TONIGHT AND DURING THE MORNING COMMUTE.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT SUNDAY UNTIL NOON  MONDAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR FREEZING RAIN…SLEET AND SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO NOON CST MONDAY.

* TIMING…FREEZING RAIN IS ANTICIPATED TO DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT AND BEGIN TO TRANSITION TO SLEET AND SNOW AFTER 3 AM MONDAY MORNING FROM NORTH TO SOUTH.

* STORM TOTAL SNOW/ICE ACCUMULATIONS…1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW AND SLEET ARE EXPECTED NORTH OF HIGHWAY 92…AND LESS THAN AN INCH SOUTH TO THE MISSOURI BORDER. UP TO A TENTH OF AN INCH OF ICE ACCRUAL IS POSSIBLE ALONG AND SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 92…WITH A LIGHT GLAZE ANTICIPATED NORTH OF HIGHWAY 92.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY…SOUTH WINDS OF 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 25 MPH MAY REDUCE VISIBILITY TO LESS THAN A MILE AT TIMES. SOME SMALL BRANCHES COULD BREAK FROM THE ICE ACCRUAL AND POTENTIALLY LEAD TO POWER OUTAGES.

* IMPACTS…THE ANTICIPATED ICE COMBINED WITH THE LIGHT SNOW AMOUNTS WILL LEAD TO HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS MONDAY MORNING…ESPECIALLY AFFECTING THE RUSH HOUR COMMUTE.

…SNOWFALL CONTINUES ACROSS THE REGION THIS MORNING…

AN AREA OF LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW HAS INTENSIFIED ACROSS PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN IOWA THIS MORNING. BRIEF REDUCTIONS IN VISIBILITY CAN BE EXPECTED TO ONE HALF TO ONE QUARTER MILE AT TIMES. ALONG WITH THAT A QUICK INCH TO INCH AND ONE HALF OF SNOWFALL WILL OCCUR WITH THIS AREA OF SNOWFALL THROUGH THE LATE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON. ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY. AREA MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO EXERCISE CAUTION THIS MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON AS THE SNOWFALL WILL LAST FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS.

Today:  Snow likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Wind chill values as low as 5. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 20 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight:  Partly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northerly after midnight.

Sunday:  Partly sunny, with a high near 35. Wind chill values as low as 10. North wind 5 to 15 mph becoming southeasterly in the afternoon.

 

Sunday Night: A chance of freezing rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 30 by 5am. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming south southwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

 

Washington’s Birthday:  Snow likely before noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.  New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 48.

The National Weather Service says around 3 to 4 inches of snow fell in southern Iowa this (Friday) morning. The Des Moines metro received around 1 to 1.5 inches of snow, and the Ames area received around 2 to 3 inches. Other snowfall amounts included 1.5-inches in Atlantic, 2 -inches in Guthrie Center, 1 inch each in Avoca and Audubon, and between .3 and one-half inch elsewhere.snow

An additional widespread 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast Saturday morning through Saturday evening. The highest amounts are expected to be in northern Iowa, and the Des Moines metro is forecast to receive around 0.5 to 1.5 inches of snow for Saturday.

…SNOW TO IMPACT THE MORNING COMMUTE…

AREAS OF SNOW WILL MOVE NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST ACROSS IOWA THIS MORNING AFFECTING THE MORNING COMMUTE WITH SNOW COVERED AND SLICK ROADS. THE SNOWFALL INTENSITY WILL VARY WITH GENERALLY LIGHT SNOW BUT ALSO INCLUDE SHORTER BURSTS OF MODERATE SNOW AS WELL. THIS WILL RESULT IN WIDESPREAD ACCUMULATIONS OF AT LEAST AN INCH AND LOCALLY UP TO TWO INCHES. VISIBILITIES MAY BE REDUCED TO UNDER A MILE DURING THE PERIODS OF HEAVIER SNOW.

MOTORISTS SHOULD PLAN FOR EXTRA TRAVEL TIME THIS MORNING…SLOWING DOWN…DRIVING CAUTIOUSLY…AND ALLOWING FOR EXTRA DISTANCE BETWEEN VEHICLES.

A AREA OF MIXED LIGHT PRECIPITATION WILL QUICKLY MOVE EAST AND BRING A PERIOD OF LIGHT SLEET OR SNOW FROM AROUND LINCOLN TO OMAHA AND INTO WEST CENTRAL IOWA THROUGH 4 AM. SOME SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF A 1/2 INCH TO 1 INCH ARE POSSIBLE. WATCH OUT FOR SLICK ROADS DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.
