A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 3 AMĀ  THURSDAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR BLOWING SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 3 AM THURSDAY.

* TIMING…BITTER COLD WIND CHILLS ARE EXPECTED EARLY THIS MORNING. BLOWING SNOW IS EXPECTED FROM THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY…SOUTHWEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED THIS MORNING BECOMING STRONG THIS AFTERNOON AT 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH. THE WINDS WILL SHIFT TO THE NORTHWEST TONIGHT AT 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH. BLOWING SNOW WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES BELOW ONE HALF MILE AT TIMES THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT.

* WIND CHILL VALUES…VALUES OF 20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO ARE EXPECTED EARLY THIS MORNING.

* IMPACTS…BLOWING SNOW ACROSS ROADS WILL PRODUCE SLICK AREAS AS SNOW BUILDS UP ON THE ROAD SURFACE. TRAVEL WILL BECOME HAZARDOUS BY LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

* TEMPERATURES/WIND CHILL VALUES…VALUES OF 20 TO 25 BELOW ARE EXPECTED EARLY THIS MORNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS…MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.

Today: Patchy blowing snow after noon. Sunny, with a high near 26. Wind chill values as low as -15. Windy, with a west southwest wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.
Tonight: Patchy blowing snow before 11pm. Mostly clear, with a low around -3. Wind chill values as low as -15. Breezy, with a west wind 13 to 17 mph becoming north after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph.

Thursday: Sunny and cold, with a high near 8. Wind chill values as low as -20. North northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming east southeast in the afternoon.
Thursday Night: Increasing clouds, with a low around 1. Wind chill values as low as -15. Southeast wind 8 to 13 mph.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 22. Southeast wind 6 to 15 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 0.

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy and cold, with a high near 6.
Saturday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around -2.
