Iowa forecast: Air conditioning is a must today, furnaces needed by Friday

News, Weather

September 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Record-breaking heat is possible in many Iowa cities today (Tuesday) as forecasters say high temperatures may hit the mid-to-upper 90s on this next-to-last day of summer. Meteorologist Jeff Zogg, at the National Weather Service, says it’ll be a steamy one. “We’re expecting some pretty hot and humid conditions, basically one day of it,” Zogg says, “ahead of a cold front that’s going to be coming through the area with high temperatures expected in the middle 90s with heat index values at least in the middle 90s as well.”

Zogg says the heat wave will be short-lived and this will be one of “those” weeks in Iowa where most of us use both the air conditioner and the furnace. “Wednesday will be a lot cooler with high temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s and even cooler on Thursday with high temperatures in the middle 60s,” Zogg says. “Those cool temperatures will continue through the end of the work week. Saturday, we’ll see a warm-up with high temperatures in the lower to middle 70s.”

The first day of fall is Thursday and the arrival of cooler weather should be right on schedule. On Friday, some northern Iowa cities may not even see a high of 60. As for today’s heat, many Iowa communities could see high temps never before seen on this date. “We could see record or at least near-record high temperatures, maybe some records in a few places, just depending on how high the temperatures get,” Zogg says.

The forecast high for Des Moines calls for 96-degrees this afternoon, which would shatter the record of 92 that was set in 1931.

Warmer & drier-than-normal weather forecast well into October

Ag/Outdoor, Weather

September 19th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Forecasters say Iowa will ride another weather rollercoaster this week with high temperatures tomorrow (Tuesday) climbing into the low to mid-90s, but then a cool front will arrive and knock highs by Thursday into the 60s, with lows in the 40s. Meteorologist Darren Clabo, who moderated the regional climate update for the National Weather Service, predicts another warm-up will soon follow with lesser chances of rain.

“Above-average temperatures are really expected over the next one to two weeks, combined with below-average precipitation,” Clabo says. “Kind of expecting more or less an upper level ridge to stick around, which should bring us warmer-than-average and drier-than-average conditions, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing going into the harvest season, folks will be able to get out in the fields.” He says that same pattern may continue right into October.

“There are some pretty strong signals that warmer-than-average conditions will persist over the central part of the United States combined with below-average precipitation,” Clabo says. “October is a drier month so below-average precipitation on a normally average to dryish month to begin with doesn’t bode well for filling stock ponds and allowing our stream flow to increase.”

Clabo says the climate outlooks show the La Nina pattern hanging on into winter, for the third year in a row, which -could- mean a warmer-than-normal winter ahead for Iowa.

Large hail the primary factor in Saturday’s severe storms

News, Weather

September 18th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Area) – “It was a dark and stormy night” lived up to an often quoted phrase from an 1830’s novel, Saturday night, across western Iowa. The National Weather Service reports hail ranging from as small as pea- to as large as baseball ball size, fell across the area. Storms also brought winds of up to 70 miles per hour. The evening began at around 5:30-p.m. with a severe thunderstorm watch issued for the far west and southwest counties. The warnings began to pop-up about two-hours later, including a tornado warning that was issued for southeast Montgomery and NE Page Counties. A possible tornado was indicated by radar, but there were no confirmed sightings.

The largest hail in southwest Iowa fell in Pottawattamie County, where baseball size hail (2.75 in diameter) was observed in Carson. Elsewhere, tennis ball size hail was reported to have occurred in Stanton, while golf ball size hail fell south of Stanton and in Griswold. Most of the hail reports from around the area, were quarter-sized, with some dime-size rocks of ice falling in Corning.

As of early Sunday morning, there were no reports of damage. That’s likely to change though, as sunlight brings a fresh perspective on the storm’s aftermath. If you have any storm damage and/or pictures you would like to submit, send them to kjannews@metc.net.  Please include (when possible) a time frame for the damage, along with the location and your name. Thank you!
