Wind Advisory & Fire Weather Watch in effect for parts of western IA today

Weather

March 27th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The National Weather Service says a Wind Advisory will be in effect from 11-am until 4-pm today (Tuesday), for parts of the KJAN listening area, along with a Fire Weather Watch, due to the danger posed by strong winds and extremely dry conditions. The Advisory and Fire Weather Watch (which is in effect from this morning through this evening), includes Audubon, Crawford, Carroll and Greene Counties in our listening area.

Strong westerly winds of 25-to 45-miles per hour, combined with low relative humidity are forecast for today. With the grasslands already being very dry, and other near dormant vegetation, there is a very real danger for quickly spreading, extremely explosive fires. All outdoor burning should be avoided.

The National Weather Service in Valley, NE has issued a “Red Flag Warning” for western Iowa’s Monona County. The warning is in effect from Noon today until 8-p.m., and means that critical fire weather conditions exist or will exist, that can create explosive fire growth potential. The Weather Service says dangerous fire weather conditions are possible this afternoon over parts of western & northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska. Much drier air is moving into the region today, with westerly winds gusting from15-to 35-miles per hour behind a front that will be passing through. The combination of very low humidity and gusty winds will create an extremely high fire danger this afternoon.
