IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa football players Nate Kaeding, Bob Sanders and Marshal Yanda have been named finalists on the Senior Bowl 75th Anniversary Team ballot.

Kaeding, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, won the Lou Groza Award, presented to college football’s top placekicker, in 2002, and was a finalist for the award in 2003. He is Iowa’s all-time scoring leader with 373 points. Kaeding scored one touchdown, kicked 67 field goals, and was good on 166 PATs. He scored 120 kicking points in 2002, a single-season Big Ten record that stood until 2010. Kaeding was a first-team All-American in 2002 and 2003.

A third-round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers, Kaeding spent nine years with the organization. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and a two-time All-Pro selection.

Sanders, a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, recorded 348 career tackles and currently ranks 11th in career stops at Iowa. He recorded 25 tackles against Indiana in 2001, which remains the fourth-best single game total in school history. As a senior, he led the nation in forced fumbles (six) and led the Big Ten in recovered fumbles (three).

Sanders was selected in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He was named the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time first-team All-Pro honoree and a Super Bowl XLI champion.

Yanda, a native of Anamosa, Iowa, started 25 games from 2005 to 2006 for the Hawkeyes. As a senior, he was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and honorable mention by the media. Yanda played two seasons at North Iowa Area Community College before transferring to Iowa.

A third-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens, Yanda went on to be named to the Pro Bowl eight times, was a seven-time All-Pro selection and was a Super Bowl XLVII champion.

The inaugural Senior Bowl was played in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1950 and moved to Mobile, Alabama, the following year, where it has become an annual tradition for over seven decades. Players who were on NFL rosters between 1998-2023 are eligible for selection to the 75th Anniversary Team.

The 75th Anniversary Team selection process will include fan participation, as well as input from current NFL executives and the Senior Bowl’s executive committee. The online fan vote will be launched at seniorbowl.com on Monday, Sept. 4.

ALBANY, New York – Freshman Dionne van Aalsum‘s fourth multi-goal game of the season led the seventh-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over No. 19 UAlbany on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf.

“Great team win against a very talented Albany team,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “When we stuck to the game plan we were clinical. Lots of growth this weekend. We are excited to get back home and play in front of the home crowd on Grant Field next weekend.”

Van Aalsum gave the Hawkeyes the early lead 1:58 into the game scoring off an assist from freshman Miranda Jackson. She recorded her second goal less than two minutes later off a penalty corner assisted by junior Annika Herbine.

Junior Hillary Cox added an exclamation point to the game with a goal in the 58th minute off a penalty stroke for the first goal of her collegiate career.

– Van Aalsum has recorded a multi-goal game in every game of her collegiate career, tallying eight goals in four games.
– Iowa recorded its third shutout in four games.

– Redshirt Sophomore Mia Magnotta tallied three saves, bringing her season total to 10 this season.

–  Magnotta has allowed only two goals in four games.

– Cox recorded her first goal of the season and her career.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer program earned its first draw of the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, tying UC Santa Barbara 2-2 on a hot day at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

Both Salomé Prat and Mira Emma notched their second goals of the season; however, it wasn’t enough to down the Gauchos, who saw Lauren Helwig score a brace. Both of Helwig’s scores came from penalty kicks in the second half.

The Cyclones played in front of their largest crowd of the year so far on Sunday, as 555 spectators took in Sunday’s action.

Though UCSB had more shots, corners and saves than the Cyclones, the Gauchos were unable to get anything going on the offensive end. Helwig capitalized on some over-aggressive ISU defense and converted both PK attempts to notch both her second and third goals of the year.

The first 30 minutes of action for both teams was pretty even, though the Gauchos were outshooting the Cyclones 6-2. Abigail Miller had a good look for the Cyclones in the 17^thminute, sending a speedy line drive toward the UCSB net only to have it stopped.

Iowa State didn’t get another shot off until the 36th minute; however, this shot connected. Salomé Prat buried a goal from roughly 25 yards out off a Jocelyn Bice assist to put the Cyclones on top. ISU would take its 1-0 lead into the break, leading at half for the second time on the year.

The Cyclones were hot out of the gates in the second stanza, jumping all over the Gauchos and punching in a second goal in the 47th minute to take a quick 2-0 lead over UCSB.

Iowa State’s defense held serve until an Isabella Agrusso foul in the box gave the Gauchos a PK in the 52nd minute. Helwig, UCSB’s leading shot-taker, attempted the PK and brought UCSB within one.

The two teams battled for the next 20 minutes, with the only shots coming from ISU, one of which Emma just missed right.

The Gauchos began to threaten in Cyclone territory in the 72nd minute, eventually drawing their second penalty in the box in the 73rd.

Helwig again converted the PK to knot things up at two. From there, UCSB shifted its focus solely to defense. The Gauchos didn’t attempt another shot, withstanding a pair of attempts from the Cyclones, and walked out of the Cyclone Sports Complex with their third draw of the year.

Mira Emma’s goal today was the 13^th of her career, pushing her into a tie for tenth-most all-time in program history.

“Our quality just dropped off in the last half hour and it cost us the game. We have to have more consistency. We probably should have gotten a second and maybe a third goal in the first half and then maybe the game is over, especially when we came out in the second half the way we did. The understanding of what that consistency needs to look like will help us.”

Following its two-game homestand, Iowa State will take to the road next Thursday, Sept. 7, when it travels to Oregon to face off with Portland State. Next Thursday’s game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+. 

Iowa started quickly in a 24-14 win over Utah State. Quarterback Cade McNamara had touchdown passes on the first two possessions but after that the offense sputtered and the Hawkeyes finished with only 88 yards of rushing.

McNamara finished 17 of 30 for 191 yards and a couple of scores despite dealing with a quad strain.

Ferentz says it is an injury they will need to manage and hopes it will improve as the season goes on.

Iowa State won last year’s game 10-7 in Iowa City, snapping the Hawkeyes’ six game win streak in the series.

Iowa State started fast in a 30-9 win over Northern Iowa. The Cyclones led the game 23-0 at halftime.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell. Redshirt freshman Rocco Becht took the majority of snaps at quarterback. He was 10 of 13 for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Campbell felt the Cyclones got sloppy in the second half.

Next up ISU hosts Iowa in the 70th meeting in the Cy-Hawk Series.

U-N-I coach Mark Farley says giving up the points on a turnover in their first drive of the game sapped their momentum in a 30-9 loss at Iowa State.

Farley says his offense didn’t seem like it came out strong the entire first half and he says that carried over to the rest of the team as well.

Panther quarterback Theo Day got a lot of attention heading into the game and Farley says Day didn’t play as well as he should have, and will have to bounce back.

He says the entire team has to look at the loss and work to get better.
