University of Iowa Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Tuesday that the NCAA denied defensive tackle Noah Shannon’s appeal for eligibility in 2023. Below are statements from Ferentz and Shannon:

Kirk Ferentz:

I am incredibly disappointed by the NCAA’s decision this weekend. Noah is an exceptional person who has been a great leader on and off the field for our program over the last five years. While we will certainly miss him on the field, I am grateful that Noah has chosen to remain a part of our program as he prepares for the next step of his journey. 

Noah Shannon:

I want to apologize to the fans and everyone who supports Iowa Football. I made a mistake and I have taken responsibility for it. I am heartbroken that I will not be able to play alongside my brothers again, but I plan to stick with the team and support them any way that I can going forward.  

I want to say thank you to my family, Coach Ferentz, the coaching staff, and all of my teammates and friends for their unwavering support. I am going to make sure that this mistake does not define me or my career going forward. 

Shannon, a native of Aurora, Illinois, is a sixth-year senior in the Hawkeye football program. He was a two-time honorable mention all-conference, starting all 27 games at defensive tackle in 2021 and 2022. Shannon totaled 107 career tackles, including 47 in 2021 and 44 in 2022. He amassed 8.5 tackles for loss, tying for second most on the team, while his 6.5 sacks tied for the most last season. Shannon was honored with the team’s defensive Team Hustle Award in 2021 and Hayden Fry Award a year ago.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer team captain Samantha Cary was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Cary’s award last week was the first weekly conference recognition of her career. The fifth-year veteran is also a four-time Big Ten Player to Watch honoree.

Cary was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for efforts in Iowa’s pair of road shutouts against No. 18 Virginia on Sept. 7 and George Mason on Sept. 10.

The Hawkeyes tied the ranked Cavaliers team in a scoreless match before downing George Mason, 3-0. Cary contributed to the total against George Mason, drilling her first goal of the season with a header sent by freshman Keira Smyer to put the game out of reach in the second half.

The Hawkeye defense was stellar again this week, allowing two shots or fewer in three of four halves played. Iowa has allowed two shots or fewer in 10 of 14 halves played this season.

Iowa shut down a ranked Cavalier team that entered the match with 20 goals already under its belt. The clean sheet was Iowa’s sixth this season. The Hawkeyes have given up just one goal on the year.

Cary played all 90 minutes at No. 18 Virginia, marking the fifth time she has played the entirety of a match this season. She leads Iowa position players with 594 minutes this season.

Cary and the Hawkeyes open Big Ten Conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Iowa hosts Illinois for Junior Hawk Club Day at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team is ranked No. 23 nationally by Top Drawer Soccer. The ranking is Iowa’s highest by a major poll since the 2019 season, when the Hawkeyes reached a program-best No. 19 ranking in United Soccer Coaches Poll.

At 6-0-1 overall, Iowa is out to its hottest start since 2019, when the Hawkeyes won nine straight to start the year.

The Hawkeye defense has been dominant, shutting out six opponents and allowing just one goal through seven contests. Iowa’s six clean sheets match last season’s total.

Iowa is one of three Big Ten programs ranked in the poll, alongside No. 3 Penn State (6-0-1) and No. 25 Nebraska (6-1-1). The Hawkeyes faced No. 10 Virginia on Sept. 7, resulting in a scoreless draw on the road.

Big Ten Conference play kicks off on Sunday when Iowa hosts Illinois at 1 p.m. (CT) for Junior Hawk Day at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team announced its nonconference schedule for the 2023-24 season Tuesday. The schedule features seven home contests in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes will play two preseason exhibition games, hosting DePaul in the CrossOver at Kinnick on Oct. 15 and Clarke College on Oct. 22 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.  Iowa opens the regular season with a home game against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 6.

Iowa travels to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Ally Tipoff to face 2023 Final Four participant Virginia Tech. The Hawkeyes then continue on the road for an in-state tilt against Northern Iowa on Nov. 12 before returning to Carver-Hawkeye Arena ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday to play Kansas State and Drake.

The Hawkeyes are set to travel to the Clean Simple Eats Gulf Coast Showcase from Nov. 24-26 where they face Purdue-Fort Wayne in the opening round of the tournament.  Other teams in the field include: Delaware, Florida Gulf Coast, Kansas State, North Carolina, Vermont and Western Kentucky.

Iowa closes its nonconference slate with four December in-state contests, beginning with a Dec. 2 game against Bowling Green (Dec. 2) in Iowa City. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game against Iowa State will be played on Dec. 6 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames and Iowa will play a neutral site game in Des Moines on Dec. 16 against Cleveland State as part of the Iowa men’s and women’s doubleheader inside Wells Fargo Arena. After breaking for finals, the Hawkeyes conclude nonconference play against Loyola Chicago on Dec. 21.

Iowa is coming off a historic season in which it won a school-record 31 games, finished NCAA national runners-up and was second in the country in attendance. Senior guard Caitlin Clark, who was the consensus National Player of the Year and Collegiate Woman of the Year, averaged 27.8 points, 8.6 assists and 7.1 rebounds per game. Seniors Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin, and sophomore Hannah Stuelke also return for Lisa Bluder’s 24th season as Iowa’s head coach.

Tickets for Iowa’s Crossover at Kinnick are still available in general admission seating. All purchases are nonrefundable, tickets for adults are $10 and $5 for youth (18 & younger). Season tickets for the 2023-24 campaign are sold out for the first time in program history.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s cross country sends a small group to Normal, Illinois, for the Redbird Invite on Friday night. The women’s 5,000-meter race begins at the Weibring Golf Club at 5 p.m. (CT).

The Hawkeyes will take five mid-distance specialists to the event, led by Alli Bookin-Nosbisch. The senior from Ottumwa, Iowa, appears on Iowa’s all-time top-10 track and field list four times, including two school records (indoor 800 meters, indoor distance medley relay). Bookin-Nosbisch has a 5,000-meter personal best of 18:29.9 set at the Dirksen-Greeno Invite in 2021.

Sophomore Gabby Cortez will compete in the second cross country race of her career, following a 15:42.8 finish in the 4,000-meter race at the Hawkeye Invite on Sept. 1. Freshman Ava Rush and seniors Katie Moore and Clare Pitcher will make their 5,000-meter debuts on Friday.

The college career of Iowa defensive lineman Noah Shannon is over. Shannon was suspended for the season by the NCAA as part of a gambling investigation. Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz says his appeal has been denied.

Shannon did not wager on an Iowa football game but reportedly wagered on a game involving another Iowa sports team.

Ferentz says he does not agree with or understand the decision.

Shannon passed up the NFL Draft to return for a sixth year and Ferentz says he will remain involved in the program.

The 25th ranked Hawkeyes take a 2-0 record into a game at home against Western Michigan and Ferentz says a key this week is not looking ahead to next week’s Big Ten opener at seventh ranked Penn State.

Ferentz says all he has to do is point to the recent history of the series.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says he is focused on getting the Cyclones to bounce back from a tough loss. The Cyclones are 1-1 after a 20-13 loss to Iowa and next up visit Ohio.

It is the Cyclones’ first road test of the season.

Ohio is 2-1 on the season after a 17-10 loss at Florida Atlantic.

The run game struggled against Iowa, but the offensive has protected quarterback Rocco Becht through two games. The Cyclones have not given up a sack.
