IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Daianne Hayashida will travel to Cary, North Carolina, to compete at the 2023 ITA Women’s All-American Championships. The tournament, which will be held at the Cary Tennis Park, features the nation’s top NCAA Division I student-athletes. 

Hayashida will open the tournament Saturday, facing Clemson’s Cristina Mayorova in the Round of 128 at 9:45 a.m. (CT).  A victory would move Hayashida to the Round of 64, where she would square off against Arizona State’s Giulia Morlet or Austin Peay’s Jana Leder. 

It is the second time in three years that Iowa has been represented in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships.  Alexa Noel and Samantha Mannix represented the Hawkeyes at the event in 2021 with Noel advancing to the singles finals.

Woodbine was the boys champ at the IKM-Manning cross-country invitational with 40 points as the IKM-Manning placed second with 54. Denison-Schleswig was fourth with 93 points.

Landon Bendgen and Gunner Wagner placed first and second for the Tigers.

Boyer Valley’s Dane Gorham was third and Logan-Magnolia’s Brodie Davis took fourth. Lane Sams was the top finisher for IKM-Manning in tenth and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Austin Rasmussen finished 12th.

AHSTW scored 59 points to win the girl’s team title, just ahead of Boyer Valley with 66. Denison-Schleswig was third with 82, and IKM-Manning fourth with 90.

Lola Mendlik of Denison-Schleswig won the individual championship. AHSTW got top ten finishes from Bella Lamp in 7th, Ava Paulsen in 8th, and Rylie Knop in 10th. IKM-Manning’s Raegan Garrison took third.

Madison Sporrer of Logan-Magnolia placed second, Exria/Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Michelle Wilson was fifth, Woodbine’s Adyson Lapel sixth and Audubon’s Stefi Beisswenger 11th.

Lewis Central won the Shenandoah Cross Country Invitational boys title with 45 points, Glenwood was second with 54 and Clarinda had 89 in third.

Ethan Eichhorn led the Titans’ with a first-place finish. Kevin Coots claimed sixth.

Glenwood’s Bryant Keller was runner-up and Andrew Smith placed fourth for the Rams. Clarinda’s Treyton Schaapherder was third.

Riley Blay of Nodaway Valley placed fifth.

Glenwood won the girl’s crown with 38 points. Lewis Central was second with 54, Clarinda had 62 in third, Heartland Christian placed fourth with 144 points and Riverside had 155 for fifth.

Raenna Henkeof Clarinda was the individual champion, Glenwood’s Grace Berglunda was second and Shenandoah’s Hailey Egbert finished third.

The Shenandoah Mustangs and head coach Ty Ratliff were feeling good about how the season was going well as the Mustangs had won back-to-back games by a total score 98-14. But after last Friday night’s loss to Underwood 49-0 it knocked the Mustangs down to reality. Coach Ratliff said this is one that got away early and quickly from his Mustangs squad, but one his team can learn and grow from.

The Mustangs had lots of missed tackles a week ago that helped Underwood have some big explosive plays and Coach Ratliff knows the defense has to make routine plays tonight for his team to get back into the win column.

Coach Ratliff knows in a even matchup like his Mustangs have tonight on the road at Red Oak, which ever defense makes a couple splash plays will put themselves in the best position to win.

For the Mustangs to bounce back after a shutout loss Coach Ratliff said it all comes down to one main component.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field welcomes 19 student-athletes to the men’s program as part of the 2023 recruiting class, Director of Iowa Track and Field Joey Woody announced Thursday.

“I’m extremely excited about the 2023 men’s track and field and cross country recruiting class,” Woody said. “My staff did a tremendous job recruiting the best talent from Iowa and around the world to find the right athletes who will be immediate contributors to our program. Our recruiting class includes athletes who will cover all event areas for our men’s program. We graduated many Big Ten medalists, NCAA qualifiers and All-Americans, but I feel very confident in these newcomers,” Woody added. “They have the elite talent and ability to fill many of those holes to keep our program at the top of the Big Ten and NCAA. I’m very impressed with how our incoming freshman and transfers have already shown their maturity, hard work ethic, and commitment to winning team championships.”

This year’s incoming class represents five states, including nine athletes from the state of Iowa. The Hawkeyes also welcome one student-athlete from Jamaica and one from Nigeria.
