Police investigate discovery of possible human remains

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police in northern Iowa are investigating the discovery of what appear to be human bones. Mason City police said in a news release that a resident found the bones, along with clothing, on Thursday on the shore of the Winnebago River. Officers searched the area and found additional bones. Everything that was collected was transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.

 

No. 3 Illinois gets past No. 5 Iowa, into Big Ten title game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kofi Cockburn scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half, and No. 3 Illinois beat No. 5 Iowa 82-71 to advance to the Big Ten Tournament title game. The Fighting Illini have won six straight, with three coming against top-10 foes. If Illinois wins one more, against No. 9 Ohio State, it would claim its first tourney title since 2005.

Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points for Illinois, and reserve guard Andre Curbelo finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Luka Garza had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa.

 

Farmers to Families Food Box Giveaway in Atlantic March 16

Cass County Wellness Coordinator Brigham Hoegh reports on Tuesday March 16th, a USDA Farmers to Families Food Box distribution will be held at the Cass County Community Center from 3-6 PM, or as supplies last. Anyone is welcome to visit the drive-through food box pick-up, and no documentation or proof of need is required. Boxes will be given away at no cost. People from surrounding towns and communities are welcome. The USDA Farmers to Families Food Boxes are likely to contain fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and meat.

This event will be the second Farmers to Families food box distribution in Cass County in a week. The Anita Town and Country hosted another distribution this past Saturday, March 13th.

Woman killed in northern Iowa crash Friday night

One person died during a single-vehicle accident in northern Iowa’s Worth County, Friday night. The Iowa State Patrol reports 37-year old Michelle Marie Runde, of Northwood, was died when her car left the road and crashed at around 9:30-p.m..

The accident happened as Runde was traveling north on Highway 65, just north of Northwood. The 2016 Dodge Charger she was driving left the road and traveled through a field before entering a machine shed. Runde was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The Patrol was assisted by the Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Northwood and Mason City Fire Departments.

Iowa COVID-19 data for 3/13/21: 593 additional cases, 2 additional deaths

The Iowa Department of Public Health’s Coronavirus dashboard, today (as of 10-a.m., Saturday), shows 593 additional positive test results for COVID returned from the labs, for a total of 370,236. There was also 2 additional deaths statewide, for a pandemic total of 5,633. Long-Term Care facility deaths account for 2,215 of the total number of deaths across the state.

Long-Term Care (LTC) facility outbreaks remain at three. Hospitalization numbers show: 182 Iowans hospitalized with COVID (compared to 168 on Friday); 41 in an ICU (compared to 76 Friday); 40 people were admitted to a hospital across the state, and 17 patients are on a ventilator (Three more than Friday).

RMCC Region 4 hospitals (those in western/southwest Iowa) show 14 hospitalized COVID patients (2 more than Friday), seven are in an ICU, two persons were admitted and two are on a ventilator.

Over one-million total doses have now been administered (1,070,062) in Iowa, with 990,459 given to Iowa residents alone.  Over 366,371 have completed the vaccination series.

The 14-day positivity rate is 3.8%, while the seven-day rate is down to 3.7%.

OWI arrest in Red Oak Friday night

The Red Oak Police Department reports an OWI arrest on Friday night. At 8:30 p.m. Officers stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of North 4th Street in Red Oak. The driver, 41-year-old Brianna Nedean Gasper of Red Oak, was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. Gasper was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Luka Garza scored 24 points, Joe Wieskamp made two key baskets late and No. 5 Iowa fended off Wisconsin 62-57 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded Hawkeyes rallied from a six-point halftime deficit behind Garza. Their all-time leading scorer dominated inside, making 10 of 15 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. Iowa advanced to face third-ranked Illinois in Saturday’s semifinals. D’Mitrik Trice led Wisconsin with 19 points. The Badgers came into the tournament having lost five of six.
