The Big 12 Conference released it’s media preseason football poll on Thursday. After winning last season’s Big 12 Football Championship, Baylor was picked to repeat as champion this season. The Bears garnered 17 first place votes, edging out Oklahoma in second with 12 top nods. Iowa State was voted 6th in the preseason poll and did get one top vote.

(Des Moines, IA) Effective immediately, the beach at Lake of Three Fires in Taylor County will be closed temporarily for swimming. The closure is a precautionary response to a confirmed infection of Naegleria fowleri in a Missouri resident with recent potential exposure while swimming at the beach at Lake of Three Fires State Park.
Testing to confirm the presence of Naegleria fowleri in Lake of Three Fires is being conducted in conjunction with the CDC and could take several days to complete. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is working closely with the Department of Natural Resources to share information about this rare infection and will provide additional updates as test results become available.
Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic single-celled free-living ameba that can cause a rare life-threatening infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The ameba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds; however, PAM is extremely rare. Since 1962, only 154 known cases have been identified in the United States. No additional suspected cases of PAM are currently being investigated in Missouri or Iowa.
While Naegleria fowleri can be present in any body of warm freshwater across the United States, infections as a result remain rare. Infection by Naegleria fowleri can occur if water containing the ameba enters the body through the nose. The Naegleria fowleri ameba then travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue. This infection cannot be spread from one person to another, and it cannot be contracted by swallowing contaminated water.
People can take actions to reduce the risk of infection by limiting the amount of water going up the nose. These actions could include:

ALICIA JAN [Stamp] WADDELL, 70, of Griswold, died Thursday, July 7, 2022, at home. Funeral services for JAN WADDELL will be held 10:30-a.m. Monday, July 11th, at the Central Church of Christ, in Griswold. Rieken Funeral Home in Griswold has the arrangements.
The family will meet with friends and family for a time of love, stories and fellowship at the Central Church of Christ on Sunday July 10th from 2:30 – 4:30 PM.
A luncheon will be served at the church after the burial at the Griswold Cemetery, west of town. All are invited stay and continue to share love and fellowship with the family.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be given to Jan’s favorite charities at a later date.

The Iowa State Patrol responded to a 2-vehicle accident at the 52 mile-marker of Interstate 80 in Cass County on Thursday morning. An Acura sedan and a Chevy pickup both ended up clear down in the southbound ditch following the accident. Both drivers were taken to Cass Health by Cass EMS. No further details are known at this time.
Marne Fire responded to assist at the scene as well.
Des Moines, Iowa – The State’s fiscal year drew to a close on June 30, and State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is reflecting on the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt’s accomplishments. “In the past year, my office was able to return over $24 million dollars to more than 25,000 claimants,” announced Fitzgerald. “Reuniting owners with their rightful property will always be one of the most rewarding aspects of my job, and I will continue to provide past and present Iowans with a free, easy and accessible way to find their treasure.”
The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt was created by Fitzgerald in 1983 to return missing money and other abandoned property to the rightful owners or heirs. Each year, businesses and financial institutions turn over the assets from inactive checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, lost stocks and bonds, security deposit refunds, life insurance premiums and the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes to the State for safekeeping. Fitzgerald uploads information to an online database, sends letters to last known addresses and publishes names in local papers to locate the owners.
“We reunited thousands of people with their cash this year, which means our efforts are paying off,” continued Fitzgerald. “But we are still holding $454 million! With one in 10 people being owed unclaimed property, there is a good chance you or someone you know has funds to claim. Search for yourself, family, friends and favorite businesses.”
