Soft Banana Cookies (9-16-2023)

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sour milk
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 3)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips

Cream shortening and sugar in a large mixer bowl.  Add eggs and vanilla; blend well.  Combine flour, soda and salt; add alternately with sour milk and mashed bananas to creamed mixture.  Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.  (Dough will be soft) Drop by teaspoonful onto a greased baking sheet.  Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.  Makes about 7 dozen.

You can make sour milk by adding 1 tablespoon real lemon juice to sweet milk.  Let stand a few minutes to curdles.

31st Annual Wallace Foundation meeting set for March 15th

(Lewis, Iowa) – The 31st Annual meeting for the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research & Development will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the Learning Center in Lewis, Iowa*. Registration begins at 9:00-a.m., followed by the program with two speakers, at 9:30-a.m.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 followed by the Annual meeting of the Foundation. This year’s speakers  include Tony Mensing a Field Agriculture Engineer for ISU Extension and Outreach. He will be speaking on Soil Compaction. And, Mark Licht, Assistant Professor and Extension Cropping System Specialist in the Dept of Agronomy at Iowa State University. He will be speaking on farming in Urkaine: Warzone or breadbasket of the World. His extension, research and teaching program is focused on how to holistically manage cropping systems to achieve productivity, profitability, and environmental goals. His research is centered around varied aspects of soybean, corn, and cover crop management.

The Program-is open to the public and there is no fee for attending. The day will conclude with the Wallace Foundation Membership Annual Business Meeting.

Terrific season ends in Regional Semis for Atlantic girls hoops

Shots just wouldn’t fall and the Atlantic girls basketball team saw their breakout season come to an end with a 46-37 loss to Harlan in the Class 3A Region 5 Semifinals on Wednesday night.

The Trojans started the game well with a 6-0 run and led 8-5 at the end of the first. Harlan would rally for a four-point lead at halftime 19-14. The game turned in full favor of the Cyclones early in the fourth quarter. Atlantic had cut the Cyclones’ lead to 2 at 34-32 and then missed a couple of free throws. The Cyclones made a foul shot and then got a big three from Aubrey Schweiso. The following possession the Cyclones poked away a pass and Schweiso raced the other way for a layup, putting Harlan up 40-32. The Trojans wouldn’t get closer than 6 points the rest of the way. A

The Trojans got some of the looks they wanted throughout the night but just couldn’t get some big ones to fall. Atlantic was led by 20 points from sophomore Paytn Harter and 12 from senior Jada Jensen. Atlantic ends the season with a mark of 18-5. Coach Vargason was very proud of what they accomplished.

Harlan was led by 17 points from Schweiso and 13 from Ava Monson. The Cyclones improved to 14-7 on the season and will move on to the Regional Final on Saturday at Des Moines Christian.

Creston woman arrested during a traffic stop in Montgomery County

(Emerson, Iowa) – A traffic stop at around 2-a.m. today (Thursday), in Montgomery County, resulted in the arrest of a woman from Union County. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the traffic stop took place on Highway 34 at A Avenue, northeast of Emerson. During the stop, authorities say the driver of the vehicle that was pulled-over, 46-year-old Elizabeth Lea Reents, of Creston, began fighting Deputies. She was arrested on charges of Interference with Official Acts, Unlawful Possession of Prescription Pills, and Child Endangerment.

Reents was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

No. 7 Iowa women beat Wisconsin 91-61

The seventh ranked Iowa Hawkeye women shot better than 63 percent and cruised to a 91-61 victory over Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes are 13-2 in the Big Ten.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes visit Nebraska this weekend.

It begins a tough finishing stretch for the Hawkeyes who will also visit Maryland.

Drake wins at Northern Iowa 82-74

Drake built a 14 point second half lead then held off a late UNI rally for an 82-74 win in Cedar Falls. It was the eighth straight win for the Bulldogs who remained tied at the top of the Missouri Valley race with Bradley with three to play. Drake coach Darian DeVries.

Tucker DeVries led the way with 19 points. Roman Penn scored 16 and had nine assists as Drake improved to 13-4 in the Valley and 22-6 overall.

DeVries says Penn took control down the stretch after UNI made a late run.

Bowen Born led UNI with 16 points. The loss for the Panthers was their sixth straight.

Fast start leads No. 19 Iowa State over No. 22 TCU

Iowa State raced out to a 15-2 lead as the 19th ranked Cyclones beat 22nd ranked TCU 70-59 in Ames. Jaz Kunc had a career high 22 points as ISU bounced back from a home loss to Oklahoma State.

Kunc also had a career high five three pointers as the Cyclones improved 8-5 in the Big-12 after holding off a second half rally by the Horned Frogs.*

The Cyclones started quickly in both halves. ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger.

Sidney (IA) man arrested following a brief pursuit Wednesday night

(Sidney, Iowa) – An attempted traffic stop Wednesday night on a speeding vehicle in Fremont County, resulted in a brief pursuit and an arrest. Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports his Deputies attempted to stop a 1995 Ford truck at around 10:30-p.m., west of Riverton. The vehicle failed to yield, and a short pursuit was initiated. The driver, 34-year-old Blake Tobin, of Sidney, was arrested without incident. Tobin was placed under arrest for:

  • Eluding (OWI), a Class D Felony
  • Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense, a Serious Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Controlled Substance, (Marijuana), a Serious Misdemeanor

And, upon being booked into the Fremont County Jail, Tobin was found to be concealing a controlled substance on his person and subsequently charged with: Possession of Contraband in a correctional facility, a Class D Felony

Tobin is being held on $12,000 cash bond. Other charges are pending.
