Road’s completely covered with snow, several accidents

(Area Counties) – Roads in western and southwest Iowa have deteriorated and are completely covered with snow as of 2-p.m. There have been numerous accidents, most are of the property damage variety, but a two-vehicle head-on, injury accident occurred on Highway 25 and 430th Street in Adair County, near Orient, at around 2:15-p.m.

The Iowa DOT reports they “have nearly 200 plows out right now, so if you are driving and see one, please give the snow fighter plenty of room to get the job done. Get traveler info updates at www.511ia.org or the Iowa 511 app.”

From the Cass County Sheriff’s Office (1:25-p.m.): Interstate 80 is snow and slush. One lane in areas. County roads are 100% covered. State highways are mostly covered use caution while driving.

JANET AUNAN, 98, of Atlantic, died March 11, 2023, at Heritage House in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life Memorial service for JANET AUNAN will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, March 24th, in Heritage Hall, at the Heritage House. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

The service will be livestreamed and a link will be available closer to the time of the service on her obituary at www.rolandfuenralservice.com.

Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Heritage Hall and also during a light lunch following the service.

Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the Heritage House Good Samaritan Fund in Atlantic.

JANET AUNAN is survived by:

Her children – Thomas (Suzanne) Aunan; Catherine (John) Paul; Barbara Piittmann, and John (Monica) Aunan.

Her daughter-in-law, Carol Aunan.

16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren

ALLYN BARTELSON, 85, of Irwin, died Friday, March 10, 2023, at home. Funeral services for ALLYN BARTELSON will be held 11-a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Irwin. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is on Monday, March 13, 2023, from 5-until 7-p.m.

Burial is in the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Irwin.

ALLYN BARTELSON is survived by:

His wife – Beverly Bartelson, of Irwin.

His daughters – Linda Player, of Olathe, KS, and Peggy (Derrick) Barker, of Marshalltown, IA.

His sister – Carol Nelson, of Batavia, lA.

5 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 3 great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-grandchildren, and his in-laws.

Class 1A Championship

Grand View Christian 63, North Linn 46

Grand View Christian led by just 2 points at halftime but outscored North Linn 31-16 in the second half to grab the Class 1A State Title 63-46 on Friday afternoon in Des Moines. Josh Sanderson and Noah John each had 18 points to lead the Thunder. Western Kentucky recruit Daniel Tobiloba finished with 8 points and 15 rebounds for Grand View. The Thunder complete a perfect season at 27-0. North Linn got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Tate Haughenbury and they suffer their first loss of the year to finish 26-1.

Class 2A Championship

Central Lyon 72, Western Christian, Hull 59

Central Lyon pulled away in the second half to beat Western Christian 72-59 and win the Class 2A State Championship. It was a tie game at halftime before the Lions jumped ahead with a six point edge in the third. Zach Lutmer led the charge with 25 points and 6 assists. Reece Vander Zee added 21 points and 5 rebounds. Central Lyon completes the title run at 24-1 on the season. Western Christian was led by 19 points from Tate VanRegenmorter and they end the season at 22-4.

Class 3A Championship

Bondurant-Farrar 58, Xavier, Cedar Rapids 55

The Bondurant-Farrar Bluejays completed a perfect 26-0 season with a Class 3A Championship win over Cedar Rapids Xavier 58-55 on Friday evening. The Bluejays were led by 19 points from Colby Collison and Reed Pfaltzgraff added 15 points, 4 steals, and a block. The Bluejays trailed by 5 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the Musketeers 21-13 in the final period. Xavier had four players score in double-figures, led by 17 from Aiden Yamilkoski.

Class 4A Championship

Valley, W.D.M. 75, Waukee Northwest 67

A 27-18 advantage for West Des Moines Valley in the 2nd quarter was all it took for the Tigers to win the Class 4A State Championship over Waukee Northwest on Friday night. The two teams played an even second half and Valley grabbed the title with a 75-67 victory. Zay Robinson had a big game for Valley with 28 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Curtis Stinson added 19 points and 4 boards. The Tigers shot a terrific 62% from the field and cap the title run with a 21-5 record. Waukee Northwest was led by 27 points and 4 rebounds from Grant Tigges and 19 points and 9 board from Pryce Sandfort.

UNI women take down Illinois-Chicago to reach MVC Semifinals

UNI had four players score double-figures and the Panthers beat Illinois-Chicago 73-57 in the quarterfinals of the MVC Hoops in the Heartland Tournament on Friday night.

The Panthers had an 8-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and saw that advantage dwindle to three before finishing with a 19-6 run to win the game.

UNI shot 51% from the field and were a sizzling 18 of 20 at the free throw line. Grace Boffeli had 23 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Panthers. Emerson Green added 11 points, five rebounds, and 2 steals.

UNI improved to 22-8 on the season. The Panthers will now take on Belmont in the semifinals on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Illinois-Chicago was led by 13 points and 5 rebounds from Josie Filer. The Flames fell to 18-15 on the season.

Drake women advance to MVC Semifinals

The Drake women’s basketball team picked up a 73-70 win over Missouri State in the quarterfinals of the MVC Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs fought back after trailing most of the game to advance.

A pair of threes from Katie Dinnebier and Sarah Beth Gueldner tied the game up at 63 and the Bulldogs took the lead with under a minute to play on a Maggie Bair acrobatic layup. Drake then got a big block from Anna Miller and were clutch down the stretch at the foul line to seal the win.

Maggie Bair and Grace Berg each dropped in 20 points and Bair also had 10 rebounds to notch her 11th double-double of the season. Katie Dinnebier had 19 points and 4 assists and went a perfect 6 of 6 at the free throw line.

The Bulldogs improved to 20-9 on the season and will now take on Illinois State in the semifinals of the Hoops in the Heartland Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Moline, Ill.

Missouri State dropped to 20-11 on the season.

AHSTW hires familiar face as the new HS Principal

(Avoca) AHSTW Schools Superintendent Darin Jones, Friday, released statement on Twitter, announcing the District’s next High School Principal. Jones said  “The AHSTW Community School District is excited to announce that Mr. Davis Pattee has been named our next High School Principal beginning with the 2023-2024 school year!”

Pattee is a graduate of the District, where has also served in the past, as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, including a runner-up finish in 2018. In February 2019, the Harlan Community School District hired Pattee as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, replacing the retiring Mitch Osborn.

Iowa State falls short against Kansas in Big 12 Semifinals

Iowa State fell to Kansas 71-58 in a hard fought Big 12 Tournament semifinal game in Kansas City on Friday night. The Cyclones rallied from an 8-point halftime deficit to take their first lead early in the second half but the Jayhawks promptly responded. A 10-2 run put KU up 48-41 with just under 11 minutes left and Iowa State never recovered.

Kansas made 52% of their shots from the field and were led by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Jalen Wilson. Gradey Dick added 15 points and 5 boards and Dejuan Harris dropped in 11 points, dished out 6 assists, and had 3 steals. The Jayhawks improved to 27-6 and advance to face Texas in the Big 12 title game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Iowa State got 16 points and 4 rebounds from Jaren Holmes and Robert Jones added 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Cyclones head into the NCAA Tournament with a record of 19-13. The Cyclones will wait for their tournament placement on Sunday.

Triple fatal crash in Eastern Iowa

(Walcott, Iowa) – A head-on crash on Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa Friday night claimed three lives. One other person was injured. The Iowa State Patrol says the crash happened at around 11:15-p.m. north of Walcott, in Scott County. The report says a 2014 VW and a 2014 Chevy collided head-on in the inside land of I-80 at mile marker 284.

The direction of travel for each vehicle was undetermined and under investigation as of the latest report. The three victims of the crash who were not wearing their seat belts died at the scene. The fourth victim was wearing a seat belt. They were transported by Medic EMS to the Genesis East Hospital in Davenport. No names were released.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Davenport Police, Iowa DOT, Walcott Fire assisted at the scene.
