(Radio Iowa) – A Bettendorf woman who claimed to have cancer has been ordered to repay people who donated to cover cancer treatments she never received. Twenty-year-old Madison Russo has pleaded guilty to one count of first degree theft in June and could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. K-W-Q-C reports court documents show she must pay restitution to victims of her cancer scam before or as she’s sentenced on October 20th. Russo has been ordered to pay over 39-thousand dollars in total, but most of that must be paid to GoFundMe, where more than 400 donors gave money to support her.
Donations came from individuals, schools, businesses and non-profit groups. According to court documents, Russo used photos cancer patients had posted online and claimed she had leukemia, pancreatic cancer and a tumor the size of a football wrapped around her spine.
(Bartlett, Iowa) — A body pulled from Iowa side of the Missouri River last month, was identified as a woman from Nebraska. According to KETV in Omaha, officials with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reported 39-year-old Elizabeth Adair, of Omaha, was found on July 18th, about four-miles south of the Bartlett boat ramp, west of Bartlett, in Fremont County. Her body was found U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers.
Adair was identified through finger prints. A State Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy determined no foul play was involved in the woman’s death. Her death was investigated by Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa DCI, with assistance from Omaha Police.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa soccer kicks off the 2023 season with a road exhibition against South Dakota on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex in Vermillion, South Dakota. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. (CT).
The match is the first of two exhibitions prior to the regular season. The Hawkeyes conclude preseason action with the second exhibition versus Drake at 7 p.m. (CT) on Aug. 12 at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa.
South Dakota finished 4-9-5 overall last season, led by returning Coyote Janaina Zanin with 12 offensive points, as well as starting goalkeeper Caroline Lewis. The Bulldogs were 5-8-6 on the year in 2022, and also return their leading point scorer in senior Emma Nagel (11 points, 5 goals).
Attendance to both matches is free, and spectators are encouraged to attend.
Iowa brings back a veteran core of five seniors who have made a combined 217 career starts. Leaders include returning captain and fifth year player Samantha Cary, as well as graduate student Josie Durr suiting up for her seventh season wearing the black and gold.
Junior Elle Otto is Iowa’s leading returner offensively, having put up 11 points last season on three goals and five assists. Senior goalkeeper Macy Enneking currently ranks sixth in career shutouts (9) and seventh in career victories (13) for the Hawkeyes.
Fourteen returning Hawkeyes have made at least 10 career starts. Iowa also welcomes 16 newcomers, including 13 freshmen and three transfers.
The Hawkeyes open the regular season on Aug. 17 at Florida Gulf Coast in For Meyers, Florida. Iowa’s home opener is set for 1 p.m. (CT) on Aug. 20 against Kansas City.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Patrick McCaffery will participate in the Nike Skills Academy on the Nike campus in Portland, Oregon, from Aug. 7-12. The forward will attend the Academy prior to joining his teammates in Europe on their foreign trip.
The Nike Skills Academy will provide McCaffery the opportunity to train alongside some of the best past and present NBA players and coaches. The prestigious skills development camp features the nation’s top collegiate players, which includes a combine experience, drills, off-court workouts, film sessions and competition.
“I am honored and excited about the opportunity to represent our basketball program at the Nike Skills Academy,” said McCaffery. “I am grateful for the opportunity and will do my best to make the most of it.”
McCaffery averaged 9.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, one assist and 0.8 steals during his junior season, where he played in 27 games with 14 starts. The Iowa City, Iowa, native reached double figures in 11 games and had five 20-point contests. McCaffery enters his senior season having scored 769 career points.
McCaffery is the fifth Hawkeye since 2014 to be invited to the elite basketball camp, joining Aaron White (2014), Jarrod Uthoff (2015), Peter Jok (2016) and Tyler Cook (2018).

Junior Riley Mulvey will not make the foreign trip due to a prior family commitment.
The Hawkeyes depart for their foreign trip on Aug. 5. In a slight change to the previously announced schedule, the Hawkeyes will open play in Paris against the Paris All-Stars on Aug. 8, before playing game two in Valencia against the Valencia All-Stars on Aug. 11. Iowa closes out its foreign trip on Aug. 14, in Barcelona against the Barcelona All-Stars.
The Iowa State basketball team leaves Friday for a three-game trip to the Bahamas. The Cyclones open Sunday against the Bahamas Select Team.
That’s Cyclone coach T.J. Otzelberger who feels the schedule will be competitive.
The final game of the trip is August ninth against a team from Argentina.
Iowa freshman Owen Freeman has spent the summer adjusting to the physical challenge of college basketball. The 6-10 native of Moline helped lead Moline High School to an Illinois state championship last season and is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hawkeyes.
Freeman says his athleticism is an advantage on the front line.
Freeman says style of play is a major reason he is at Iowa.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – If you need to travel around the U.S. 20/Interstate 29 interchange in Sioux City next week, please watch for ramp closures as the Iowa Department of Transportation crews inspect bridges in the area. The five bridges are on U.S. 20 and will be inspected on Aug. 7 and Aug. 8, weather permitting. The DOT will be closing the westbound U.S. 20 to the southbound I-29 ramp on Monday, Aug. 7. Motorists will be directed to a detour using Floyd Boulevard.
On Tuesday, Aug. 8., the DOT will close the southbound I-29 exit to eastbound U.S. 20 (to Fort Dodge). Travelers will be directed to a detour on U.S.20 over to Nebraska and then turning around to go east.
Both of these ramp closures will be in place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
(Sioux City, Iowa via KCAU) – Iowa Dept. of Transportation data show nearly 80% of Iowa motorcyclists killed in 2022 were not wearing a helmet. As thousands of bikers head to Sturgis, South Dakota for a motorcycle rally that runs through August 13th, the Iowa State Patrol urges safe driving.
Seventy-eight percent of motorcyclists killed in 2022 were not wearing a helmet, a 3% increase from 2021, and a 10% increase from 2020. The number of fatalities, 49, was down from 2021, when 68 motorcyclists died. Despite Iowa’s lack of a motorcycle helmet law, Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla said the Iowa State Patrol always recommends safety.
Thirty-two bikers have been killed on Iowa roads so far in 2023, putting Iowa on track to see more motorcycle fatalities than in 2022. There were no laws introduced in the most recent legislative session to require riders to protect themself with a helmet. Iowa, Illinois and New Hampshire are the three states with no motorcycle helmet laws. Other states require helmets for riders age 17 or younger, or for all riders. In 2022, 45% of motorcyclists were impaired, a 2% decrease from 2021 and 6% decrease from 2020.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for VIRGINIA CONKLIN will be held 1:30-p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the First United Presbyterian Church, in Atlantic. The family will meet with friends on Monday, Aug. 7th, from 5-until 7-p.m., at the First United Presbyterian Church, in Atlantic.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Winnebago, MN, on August 24th (2023).
