Unhealthy to hazardous air quality has developed over much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa early this morning, and these conditions will likely linger until around 9 AM. The poor air quality is the result of lingering smoke from Saturday evening fireworks activity which has become trapped near the ground by a
temperature inversion and stagnant air flow pattern. Conditions are expected to improve after 9 AM as increased atmospheric mixing allows for the dispersion of the smoke.

Those with respiratory concerns should avoid outdoor exposure until conditions improve later this morning.

Atlantic gets past Underwood in close softball battle

Sports

July 4th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans softball team was able to pull out a win over the Underwood Eagles 2-1 on Friday night in Atlantic. All three runs scored in the game came on free bases given by the pitcher.

Defense dominated much of the early portion of the game with Atlantic notching 4 hits and Underwood with 2 hits through the first four innings. Atlantic got their two runs in the 5th with a two-out rally. Madi Botos got it started with a single, followed by an Olivia Engler single and a walk for Lauren Nicholas. Underwood pitcher Sierra Fox then walked Kennedy Goergen to bring home Botos. Maleana Woodward was then hit by a pitch and that brought home Ava Rush who was base-running for Engler.

Underwood would fight back in the 7th inning with Allie Robertson’s third lead-off single of the game. That was followed by a walk for Grace Pierce and Erin McMains reaching on a fielder’s choice that got Robertson out at third. A single by Taylor Nelson loaded the bases. Olivia Engler came up with a big strikeout of Macy Vanfossan then walked in a run against Maddie Pierce. Clinging to that one-run lead Engler got Peyton Cook to ground out to first and Kennedy Goergen made the play to end the game.

Atlantic finished off a big 5-0 week and are now 13-1 on the season. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said it was another great test for his team.

Madi Botos said she is so grateful to get to play with this group.

The Eagles fell to 9-3 with the loss.

New state law says: ‘Let them sell lemonade.’

News

July 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A new state law that took effect this week ensures Iowa kids have a right to sell lemonade, cookies and other types of food and non-alcoholic drinks. Senator Roby Smith of Davenport says a number of states have enacted similar laws. “In 2011, Coralville Police shut down a lemonade stand operated by a four-year-old because they did not have a permit,” Smith says. Child-run lemonade stands were technically illegal in Iowa before this Wednesday, when the governor signed the new law.

Senator Zach Wahls notes a few cities around the country have cracked down on Girl Scouts selling cookies and the new law makes it clear kids don’t have to get government permits if they want to sell baked goods or beverages. “As an Eagle Scout myself who spent many, many years selling popcorn definitely without a permit…I look forward to protecting future generations of scouts — boy scouts and girl scouts — from needless liability,” Wahls said.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Iowa is at least the 15th state to waive the government permitting process so kids under the age of 18 may sell food door to door or set up a lemonade stand.
