Survey shows Iowa providers don’t like privatized Medicaid

A survey conducted by the Iowa auditor shows a majority of health care organizations are dissatisfied with the state’s Medicaid program and think the privatized system hasn’t been good for the more than 650,000 poor and disabled residents receiving care. Iowa shifted the state’s Medicaid system from a state-run program to one managed by private insurance companies in 2016.

There have been persistent complaints over the past four years that providers have a more difficult time getting fully paid and that access to care has worsened for patients. Auditor Rob Sand said Monday that his survey reinforces those complaints.

(UPDATE) Woman dies in apartment fire in downtown Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A woman has died in an apartment fire in downtown Fort Dodge. Firefighters were called to the building Sunday afternoon after a fire alarm activated and a neighbor reported smelling smoke. Crews were met with heavy smoke in the apartment and then found an unresponsive woman. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office. She was identified Monday at 67-year-old Jeanne Miller. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Cass County Extension to Host Drought and Leasing Meetings in Early August

Cass County Extension will host two meetings for local farmers the first week of August:

On Monday, August 3, at 5:30 PM there will be a FREE meeting on the Cass County Fair Grounds in response to local drought conditions. Meeting topics include crop growth and development under drought conditions, feeding drought damaged crops, including issues with drought silage, and other cattle management considerations, and crop insurance considerations. All topics will be presented by local Extension specialists. The meeting will last approximately 90 minutes, and producers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for seating, as the meeting will be held outdoors (under cover in case of rain).

On Thursday, August 6, a 6:30 PM, Cass County Extension will host the annual Farmland Leasing Arrangements meeting to address questions that landowners, tenants or other interested individuals have about leasing farmland. Core topics of the 2020 program will be land values and cash rent trends, cost of production, methods for determining a fair rental rate, the latest legal updates that impact farm leases and land ownership, and communication between tenants or landlords. Registration fee for the program is $20/participant or $30/couple, and includes a 100-page workbook with leasing resources. To allow for social distancing at the meeting location, pre-registrations are required by Tuesday August 4th

Registration is now open for both meetings, and RSVP’s can be made by calling the Cass County Extension Office at 712-243-1132. Registration is requested two days in advance of each meeting to allow for planning.

Atlantic announces adjusted 2020 football schedule

The Atlantic Trojans football team has a revised schedule in place for the 2020 season. The IHSAA changed the format for the season on Friday, going to a 7-game regular season instead of a 9-game schedule. All teams will compete in the playoffs which will start in what would have been Week 8 of the season.

For the Trojans they drop two home non-district games against Mount Ayr and Treynor and shift the district schedule up two weeks.

Cass County Sheriff’s report (7/27) – Anita man arrested on a Felony Sex Abuse charge

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports that as the result of an investigation, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday, arrested 18-year old Suzann Marie Hensley, of Corning, on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for Theft 2nd Degree (a Class-D Felony). Hensley was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on $5,000 bond. The following day, 27-year old Dallas Lee Laible, of Corning, turned himself in at the Cass County Jail on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for Theft 2nd Degree (D Felony) regarding the same investigation. He was released later that day, also on $5,000 bond.

On July 22nd, Cass County Deputies arrested 36-year old Ryan Joel Castle, of Wabash, Indiana, on charges of Burglary 2nd Degree (a Class-C Felony) and Domestic Assault 1st Offense. Castle was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $11,000 bond.

And on July 24th, 18-year old Seth William Max Stephenson, of Anita, was arrested on a Cass County Sheriff’s Office warrant for Sex Abuse 3rd Degree (a Class-C Felony). Stephenson was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on $10,000 bond.

JOEL WEIDNER, 63, of Atlantic, died Sunday, July 26th, at Caring Acres Nursing Home, in Anita. Graveside services for JOEL WEIDNER will be held 3:30-p.m. Friday, July 31st, at the Brighton Township Cemetery in Marne. Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

State Baseball 2A Quarterfinals delayed today due to wet grounds

The 2A Quarterfinals will be a bit behind regular schedule today at the State Baseball Tournament. Wet grounds conditions at Principal Park are the reason behind the delay. Treynor vs. Van Meter is now set to start at 12:35 p.m. The rest of the games will follow today 45-minutes following conclusion of the previous game.

RICHARD RHOADS, 73, of Lewis, died Sunday, July 26th, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. A Celebration of Life gathering for RICHARD A. Swine Building Maintenance the Topic of Online Webinar Series

ISU Extension and Outreach is joining industry partners to offer a five-part webinar series on the maintenance issues faced by livestock facility managers and maintenance crews. The sessions are geared toward livestock producers, livestock building owners and contractors, facility managers, maintenance crew members, engineers, designers and others interested in swine building maintenance.

  • Aug. 19 – It Is Your Concrete Pit as Well.
  • Aug. 21 – Maintenance of Concrete Pits and What to Look For.
  • Aug. 24 – Gable End Attic Air Intakes for Roof and Moisture Management.
  • Aug. 26 – General Maintenance Tips for Swine Buildings.
  • Aug. 28 – Building Truss Management.

Each session is offered from 1-2 p.m. CDT by Zoom videoconference. Sessions will discuss concrete pit maintenance and construction, truss management, roof and moisture management and other repair and maintenance issues that can help protect the building and extend its life. Participants also will learn about unique ways to allow clean air into the attic space and minimize pit-ventilated gases from entering the attic during periods of minimum ventilation during winter months, helping to reduce roof corrosion. Ways to maintain concrete slats including their repair, to help enhance their usable life, will also be discussed.

The series is offered in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and sponsored by Ag Property Solutions, AgVICE, Hills Bank, Hog Slat, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Marcus Lumber and Pinnacle. Registration is $20 and includes all five sessions. Advance registration is required to participate and must be completed by midnight, Aug. 17. Payment is online with credit card only. Iowa advocate for disabled people says ADA updates needed

(Radio Iowa) — A member of the city council in Sioux City says it’s time to revisit parts of the Americans with Disabilities Act that exempt certain structures from accessibility requirements. Alex Watters says he never anticipated becoming an advocate for disabled people.”I actually had an accident 16 years, two weeks into my freshman year of college, where I dove into 18 inches of water, snapped my neck…had to do six months of rehabilitation at a hospital,” he says. “I had my whole life kind of turned upside down and had to find out how to navigate a body I no longer recognized.”

Watters returned to and graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City where he says school administrators worked with him to reschedule classes in historic structures on the campus that were not accessible to his wheelchair. Watters says others in his situation aren’t as lucky. “There are a lot of institutions or different areas, companies, whatever that have those historic structures that say: ‘Well, you know it is historic, so we don’t want to alter it. We don’t want to change that or weaken the integrity of the building,’ and so people are excluded from the conversation,” Watters says, “and I think that’s unfortunate.”

The Americans with Disabilities Act did not address access issues in commercial air travel, but a separate law forbids discrimination on passenger jets. Watters says there is a business opportunity for airlines that do more to expand accessibility.”If there were more abilities for me to utilize my wheelchair and drive into the plane and lock down safely, think about the brand loyalty,” Watters says. “…That brand loyalty will mean so much to those individuals with disabilities. We’re the largest minority group in the United States. Why wouldn’t you want to capitalize on that market?”

Watters says he has to be carried onto planes and that’s risky for him and the people who are carrying him. Watters made his comments during an Iowa P-B-S Special marking the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
