Former Hawkeye QB Tom Poholsky passes away

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Former University of Iowa quarterback Tom Poholsky passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Oct. 6. He was born Nov. 14, 1966, and resided in Evergreen, Colorado. He was serving as assistant head football coach at Evergreen High School.

Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, from 4-6 p.m. (MT) at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home in Lakewood, Colorado. Funeral services and a celebration of life will be held Monday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. (MT) at Rockland Community Church in Golden, Colorado.

Poholsky lettered for the Hawkeyes from 1986-89 following a redshirt season in 1985. He joined the Hawkeyes after a prep career in St. Louis, and served as a Hawkeye team captain his senior season. Iowa posted a 30-16-3 record during his career, including recording Holiday Bowl wins in 1986 and 1987.

Poholsky’s best career start came during his freshman season as he led Iowa to a 24-21 upset at Michigan State on national television. He completed 18-of-29 pass attempts for 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Spartans.

Afton man arrested on assault and interference charges

(Creston, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Union County report the arrest on Tuesday, of 44-year-old Shane Richard Hunter, from Afton. Hunter was being held in the Union County Jail without bond while awaiting a court appearance. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault/1st offense, and Interference with Offical Acts.

CAM School Board approves resignations & SBRC MSA application

(Anita, Iowa) – Members of the CAM School District’s Board of Education, Monday evening approved a couple of resignations, and an SBRC Modified Supplemental Amount application for the Special Education Program Deficit. Shared CAM/Nodaway Valley Superintendent Paul Croghan said (as a fire drill was underway)…

As for the SBRC application…

Mr. Croghan wants to remind patrons of the CAM School District about upcoming informational meetings set to take place prior to the November elections.

He says there are many other ways to be an informed voter with regard to the bond election measure, as well.

(A reminder also, there is an informational meeting on the bond measure tonight (Oct. 13th), at the CAM North Elementary Gym, in Anita. The meeting starts at 6:30-p.m.)

Non-injury accident in Creston (“doggone it”)

(Creston, Iowa) – A motorist distracted by their back seat dog, ran into the back of a car Tuesday evening. According to Creston Police, a 2011 Toyota Corolla driven by 33-year-old Rachel E. Campbell, of Creston, was traveling west on Highway 34 at around 6:20-p.m., and approaching an intersection controlled by stoplights. A 2015 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by 75-year-old Minnie Marie Penno, of Creston, was also westbound on 34, when Penno was distracted by her dog.

When she failed to see the stopped car in front of her, Penno’s pickup struck the rear of the Toyota, causing significant front end damage to the pickup, which was towed from the scene. The car was able to be driven following the accident. No citations were issued.

(Creston, Iowa) – The Creston Police Department reports two men were arrested on separate charges, Tuesday. Authorities say 35-year-old Michael Eugene Matherly, of Casey, was arrested at around 4:05-p.m., on three Failure to Appear warrants. He was being held in the Union County Jail on a $3,500 cash-only bond. And, 34-year-old Andres Pena, of Creston, was arrested at around 9:40-p.m., Tuesday, for Public Intoxication. He was later released on a Promise to Appear in court.
