Creighton’s win streak halts at Providence

The Creighton Bluejays saw their six-game win streak come to an end with a 72-51 loss at Providence on Saturday.

AJ Reeves poured in seven threes on Senior Night for the Fryars and finished with 23 points to lead all-scorers. The Fryars led 35-26 at half and got the crowd fired up with scores on their first five possessions of the second half. Providence secured their first Big East Title in school history.

Ryan Kalkbrenner led four Bluejays in double figures with 13 points and 9 boards. Ryan Hawkins had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Creighton drops to 19-9 overall and 11-6 in the Big East. Next up for the Jays is a home game against UCONN on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Drake ekes out win over Southern Illinois

The Drake men’s basketball team capped off the regular season with a 62-60 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday at the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs saw a 14-point halftime lead dwindle down in the second half but they held on for the victory. Tremell Murphy scored 14 points, Roman Penn had 12, and Garrett Sturtz had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season at 22-9 overall and 13-5 in the Valley. They will now prep for the MVC Tourney where they will meet Southern Illinois again on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

UNI grabs MVC crown with thrilling win over Loyola

The UNI Panthers secured the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with a 102-96 win over Loyola in overtime at the McCleod Center on Saturday.

The game was tied at 46 at half and knotted up at 87 at the end of regulation. The Panthers then outscored the Ramblers 15-9 in overtime to grab the win and the title.

AJ Green had 32 points, Bowen Born added 20, and Noah Carter finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds.

UNI improved to 18-10 overall and win the MVC regular season crown with a 14-4 conference mark.

The Panthers now prep for the MVC tournament next week.

2 men arrested on drug charges Saturday

Police in Red Oak report two men were arrested Saturday, on drug charges. Authorities says 42-year old Victor William Vukonich Jr. and 42-year old Jason Michael Eppenbaugh, both from Red Oak, were arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance, with Eppenbaugh facing two counts. The men were being held in the Montgomery County Jail, on bond amounting to $300 for Vukonich, Jr., and $1,000, for Eppenbaugh.

2 adults and a child injured in a Shelby County crash

(Defiance, Iowa) – Three people were injured during  a head-on crash Friday afternoon in northern Shelby County. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by 46-year-old Ryan Wheatley, of Spirit Lake, was northbound on Highway 59, at the same time a 2014 Dodge Avenger driven by 19-year-old Evan Edwards, of Council Bluffs, was traveling southbound.

The pickup entered the northbound lane and truck the car head-on. Both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch. The accident happened at around 4:40-p.m., just north of County Road F-16. Edwards and an eight-year-old child passenger were wearing seat belts. Wheatley was not.  Scanner reports at the time said one of victims was trapped in one of the vehicles and needed to be extricated.

Evan Edwards was transported by LifeNet helicopter to the UNMC in Omaha.  Ryan Wheatley and the child were transported to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, by Defiance Rescue. The accident remains under investigation. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted at the scene.

Person on I-80 struck by a van Friday night in central Iowa

(Urbandale, Iowa) – A man who entered Interstate 80 late Friday night in Urbandale was struck by a vehicle and transported to the hospital. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2004 Ford Freestar van driven by 34-year-old Maria Alarcon, of Urbandale, was traveling west on I-80 near mile marker 126.5 at around 10:06-p.m., when 18-year-old Quinn Edward Melchert, of Eldridge, Iowa, entered the roadway. The man was taken to Methodist Hospital by Urbandale EMS.

A report on his condition was not available. The accident remains under investigation.

UNI hosts Loyola Saturday for MVC crown

Northern Iowa hosts Loyola this (Saturday) afternoon and the winner claims the Missouri Valley regular season title and the top seed at next week’s conference tournament in St. Louis. The Panthers have reached this point by winning eight of their last night games. Panther coach Ben Jacobson.

UNI’s only loss in the past month was an 85-58 setback to the Ramblers in Chicago. Jacobson hopes a full McLeod Center will give the Panthers a home court advantage.
