March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

News

March 4th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, IA) The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in collaboration with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), recognizes March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM).

Throughout March, a wide range of stakeholders, including public health organizations, prevention and treatment providers, advocacy groups and gambling operators work collaboratively to let people know that hope and help exist for problem gambling. Groups nationwide will hold conferences, air Public Service Announcements, provide counselor training, host health screening days and implement social media campaigns to increase public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment and recovery services.

The PGAM theme for this year is “Awareness +Action” and participants are encouraged to use the hashtag #PGAM2022 on social media platforms.

Problem gambling is defined as all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. Approximately 2 million U.S. adults (1% of the population) are estimated to meet criteria for severe problem gambling. Another 4-6 million (2-3%) meet the criteria for mild or moderate problem gambling.

The Office of Problem Gambling at IDPH raises awareness about the availability of gambling prevention and treatment services offered statewide. “Iowans who are impacted by problem gambling are encouraged to visit Your Life Iowa to learn more or to connect with a qualified professional. Help and hope are only a call, text, or chat away,” said Katie Bee, Project Director of the Office of Problem Gambling at the Iowa Department of Public Health.

If you have questions you’d like answered, support and assistance is available through Live Chat, by calling 1-800-BETS OFF, or by texting (855) 895-8398.

Deadline Set to Renew Expiring Conservation Stewardship Program Contracts

Ag/Outdoor

March 4th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Des Moines, Iowa, March 4, 2022— Iowa farmers who signed up for the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) in 2018 have until April 15 to apply to renew their contract for another five years. All 2018 CSP contracts expire on Dec. 31, 2022. Contract holders can visit their local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office to complete the required renewal process. According to Rubyana Neely, CSP coordinator for NRCS in Iowa, 505 CSP contracts will expire at the end of the year which help treat natural resource concerns on about 250,800 Iowa acres.

Last year, 171 Iowa farmers and landowners renewed contracts. Those contract holders are receiving an average of about $12,000 annually in CSP payments through NRCS to adopt additional activities to achieve higher levels of conservation on their lands. Through CSP, agricultural producers and forest landowners earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation activities like cover crops, buffer strips, pollinator and beneficial insect habitat, and soil health building activities – all while maintaining active agricultural production on their land.

The largest conservation program in the United States, CSP is for working lands. “Thousands of people have voluntarily enrolled in the program because it helps them enhance natural resources and improve their business operation,” said Neely. Producers interested in contract renewals or applying for CSP for the first time should contact their local NRCS office (http://offices.sc.egov.usda.gov/locator/app?state=ia) or visit www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov for more information.

Iowa DOT “Roadside chat” for March 4, 2022

News

March 4th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, Iowa) – Happy National Grammar Day! If you are writing to someone and want to be understood, it’s critical to use the right words. If your writing isn’t clear, your reader may have to guess what you’re trying to say. On that note, the Iowa Department of Transportation says, “When you’re behind the wheel, don’t make other drivers guess your next move. Using your turn signal lets the people who share the road with you know what you intend to do and allows them to act or react accordingly. That makes the road safer for all of us.”

Here is a list of maneuvers where you will want to use your turn signal, according to https://www.idrivesafely.com/defensive-driving/trending/right-way-use-your-turn-signals.

  • Making a left or right-hand turn at an intersection.
  • Entering a driveway or parking lot on either side of the road.
  • Parking on the side of the street.
  • Pulling over to the side of the road.
  • Changing lanes.
  • Passing another vehicle on the road.
  • Merging with traffic when entering a roadway.

This is a  simple but very informative tutorial on how and when to use your turn signals – https://youtu.be/KPYQGtNJyLk

The DOT says “So far in 2022, there have been 37 deaths in traffic crashes. That’s an increase of eight since last Friday.” To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf

The Wolverines (24-2) outrebounded fourth-seeded Panorama 43-24, piled up a 42-8 advantage in points in the paint and got 28 points off turnovers. The Lions, who won the Class 1A championship in 2013, will face defending champion Dike-New Hartford for this year’s crown at 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Third-seeded Central Lyon ran its offense efficiently, took care of the ball and played stingy defense in sidelining the second-seeded Cyclones.  The Lions got the ball inside with drives to the basket and sharp passes into the post and complemented that by knocking down 7-of-14 3-point shots. And the Lions (24-2) did it with near-perfect balance. Afton Schlumbohm and Addison Klosterbuer scored 12 points each, sophomore Desta Hoogendorn had 11, Regan Van Wyhe added 10 and Kaylee Davis contributed eight. The Royals advance to their first ever state game two days after winning their first state game as a merged district. MMCRU Head Coach Gillian Letsche picked up her 100th career win with the Royals.

Bishop Garrigan 74, North Linn 57
Audi Crooks and Molly Joyce delivered their usual big-time performances to lead Bishop Garrigan past North Linn 74-57 and into the Class 1A championship game. The second-seeded Golden Bears (24-3) lost to Newell-Fonda in each of the past two championship games. But when they get to Saturday’s 7 p.m. title game they’ll find fourth-seeded MMCRU as the opponent. MMCRU ended top-seeded Newell-Fonda’s three-year championship run with a 66-62 victory in the other semifinal. Joyce, the junior point guard who is playing the best basketball of her career, also scored 25, handed out five assists, made three steals and sank 12-of-13 free throws. Abbie Capesius (nine points) and Zoe Montag (nine points on 3-for-4 from 3-point range) also made solid contributions for the Golden Bears, who built a 13-point lead in the third quarter, then fended off a late rush from sixth-seeded North Linn (23-2), which made it to state for the seventh time in nine years. The Golden Bears finished 22-for-25 on free throws and shot 48 percent from the field.

With both teams struggling to make shots, ELC finally found some consistency midway through the second half, ran off 13 straight points and beat Ballard 44-30 to win the Class 3A state championship. Freshman Haylee Stokes led the way with 24 points and was named captain of the all-tournament team as ELC (26-2) claimed its second state title after a waiting four decades for it happen. The school’s first championship came in the six-player game in 1982. Ballard (23-4) dropped down a class this season after winning the 4A title a year ago.
