Study will look at ways to help small towns recycle water

News

October 29th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa State University engineers have received a grant from the E-P-A for research to help small rural communities reclaim wastewater and rainwater for other purposes like irrigation, firefighting, and drinking. Project leader Kaoru Ikuma says they are searching for options.

“When it comes to rural small communities, like many in Iowa, really it’s a struggle to find more than one type of water that they can use, and have the plan B if something goes wrong,” she says. She’ll work with researchers from the University of Rhode Island and the University of California-Berkeley for the next four years.

“What we want to do in this project is to help these smaller rural communities that do not have the resources to broaden their view in how they think about water and treating water, using water,” Ikuma says.

She says the researchers will look at different technologies to treat water, and they’ll also be testing the treated water for contaminants such as forever chemicals that are harder to remove. They’ve received three million dollars for the research.

The AHSTW Vikings powered their way to a 35-14 win over Southwest Valley in the 2nd Round of the Class A Playoffs on Friday night in Avoca. AHSTW kept their record unblemished on the season and advance on to the Quarterfinals next week.

The game started with a bang as Cole Scheffler took the opening kickoff back 60 yards for a touchdown. Scheffler said they thought they could get one in the game.

The scoring went quiet for a while after that with the next five possessions ending in 2 turnovers, 2 punts, and a missed field goal. The Timberwolves missed a 35-yard field goal attempt by Evan Timmerman and the Vikings marched the other direction 80 yards in 9 plays, capping off the drive with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Kyle Sternberg to Cole Scheffler. That made it 14-0 Vikings with :34 left in the first quarter. Southwest Valley eventually punched in a score on a 21 yard run by Timmerman to make it 14-7 with 2:43 left in the half. AHSTW punched back with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Sternberg to Luke Sternberg with :26 left in the half to make it 21-7 at the break.

Southwest Valley came out of the halftime break and powered down the field with a 18-play, 69-yard drive that took 8:39 off the clock. They finished it with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Evan Timmerman to Devin Greenwalt on 4th and Goal. AHSTW again answered the bell. The Vikings responded with an 11-play 63-yard drive, capped with a 1-yard touchdown run by Luke Sternberg to push the lead back to two scores at 28-14. The rest of the game-clock melted away on mostly stalled drives. The Vikings added their last score as they were grinding out the clock on a 31-yard pass from Sternberg to Nick Denning.
