Annual Patty Hannon Memorial Concert set for this Sunday (11/12/13)

The Atlantic Church of Christ will play host to the 30th annual Patty Hannon Memorial Concert this Sunday, Nov. 10th. Guy Somers, along with his musical family and friends will perform during the event, which begins at 2-p.m. , and features a variety of songs and tunes from Broadway musicals, movies, classic rock, classical and gospel music. There is no admission charge.

Patricia (Patty) Louise Hannon, is a native of Greenfield. She died in May, 1950, at the age of 17, from an untreatable brain tumor. Hannon had an intense love for music and marching and was drum majorette for the Atlantic High School Band for three years. She was also chosen “the flame girl” in the Atlantic Fire Department’s Parade in the fall of 1949.

Her father’s deep devotion and love for his daughter continues today with the annual Patty Hannon Concert held at the United Church of Christ. Mr. Hannon left a gift to the church, and it was decided to honor Patty respectably with a yearly concert.

Arrest likely in Council Bluffs embezzlement case

Police in Council Bluffs say an arrest is likely soon resulting from an investigation into the embezzlement of more than $100,000 from Alter Trading Corporation, a metal recycling company. Council Bluffs Police Sgt. David Dawson told the Daily NonPareil a male employee at the Alter Corporation allegedly issued unauthorized checks to his family members. The checks, which were written from Jan. 1st, 2012 through this past Wednesday, amounted to $102, 436.

The suspect, if arrested, would face felony charges of first-degree theft, punishable by a maximum of up to 10 years in prison.

Public Intox. arrest in Red Oak, Saturday

A Red Oak man was arrested early this (Saturday) morning on a Public Intoxication charge. According to Red Oak Police, 51-year old David Lawrence Howe was arrested in the 1800 block of East Summit Street at around 1:25-a.m.   Howe was brought to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on a $300 cash bond.

3 young adults arrested on drug charges Saturday morning

Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County report three young adults from Council Bluffs were arrested on drug charges early this (Saturday) morning, following a traffic stop on Highway 34. The vehicle, driven by 19-year old Dillion Michael Clemons, was stopped at around 2:50-a.m.  Clemons was charged with OWI/1st offense, Possession with the Intent to Deliver/Marijuana, and a drug tax stamp violation. His bond was set at $5,000.

Two passengers in the vehicle were arrested for Possession with the Intent to Deliver/Marijuana, and a drug tax stamp violation. 19-year old’s Travis Jay Austin Brightbill and Jeffri Madison West, were being held in the jail on $5,000 bond each.

Mens basketball: Iowa rolls past UNC-Wilmington 82-39

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Sophomore Jarrod Uthoff had 14 points and four blocks in his Iowa debut and the Hawkeyes rolled past UNC-Wilmington 82-39 Friday in its season opener. Freshman Peter Jok added 11 points for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who opened the game with a 52-12 run.

Iowa opened up a 10-point lead after seven minutes and went on a 20-3 spurt to go ahead 34-7. The Hawkeyes had 10 players score in the first half and led by as many as 47 points. Aaron White had 10 points and Gabe Olaseni had eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks for Iowa.

Cedrick Williams had 15 points to lead UNC-Wilmington (0-1). The Seahawks had just 12 first-half points, the least the Hawkeyes have allowed under coach Fran McCaffery.
