G. WAYNE OLSEN, 84, of Atlantic, died Wed., Feb. 12th, at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center. Funeral services for G. WAYNE OLSEN will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Feb. 18th, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 5-to 8-pm Mon., Feb. 17th. Condolences may be left online at www.hockenberryfamilycare.com.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery at 1:30 following the funeral and a time for lunch and fellowship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.

His brothers – Glenn (Mary Ellen) Olsen, of Atlantic, & Charles (Jane) Olsen, of Leawood, KS.

PHYLLIS E. HANSEN, 93, of Atlantic, died Wed., Feb. 12th, at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center. Funeral services for PHYLLIS HANSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Sat., Feb. 15th, at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Walnut. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Walnut one-hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Burial will be in the Layton Township Cemetery at Walnut.

PHYLLIS HANSEN is survived by:

Her husband – Vincent Hansen, of Walnut.

Her son – Jeff (Kathy) Hansen, of Walnut.

Her daughter – Claudia (Ralph) Yribar, of Bennington, NE.

4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and her sister-in-law Frances Hansen, of Walnut.

Last man to walk on the moon to visit Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The last man to walk on the moon is visiting Des Moines to talk about innovation. Eugene Cernan will share his personal stories about space when he visits Des Moines Area Community College on March 6. He will speak on the main stage at the school’s West Campus. Cernan was part of several historic space missions. In 1972, he was the last person to leave his footprints on the surface of the moon.

During his visit to the college, Cernan is expected to talk about his support for future space exploration. Cernan is one of several speakers visiting the school during an innovation-themed week. It will take place March 3-6. The events are free and open to the public.

Northern Iowa sweeps past Loyola of Chicago 80-58

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Nate Buss came off the bench to lead Northern Iowa with 18 points and the Panthers eased into an 80-58 victory over Loyola of Chicago on Wednesday night. Buss made four 3-pointers and Marvin Singleton and Matt Bohannon added 12 points each as the Panthers combined to shoot 58.7 percent from the floor. Bohannon also added four 3’s and Max Martino finished with three.

Loyola (9-16, 4-9 Missouri Valley Conference) led by six midway through the first half, but back-to-back 3’s by Buss and Bohannon and two jumpers from Singleton put Northern Iowa ahead. The Panthers (12-13, 6-7) held a seven-point lead at the break, and stretched it to 20 points 7 minutes into the second half.

Devon Turk came off the bench to lead the Ramblers with 10 points and three 3-pointers, and Milton Doyle added seven assists. Loyola shot 39.6 percent from the floor.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state panel has approved legislation giving prosecutors more options for helping minors mired in prostitution and increasing penalties for pimps who used children. The House Judiciary Committee voted 20-0 yesterday to approve the bill, which now goes to the House floor. Penalties would also increase for pimping involving a minor from a class “D” felony to a class “C” felony.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City elementary school has lifted a lockdown caused by a suspect on the loose. Mark Twain Elementary School went on lockdown yesterday afternoon as authorities searched for a suspect wanted by county and state officials. The Press-Citizen reports that Iowa City Community School District says authorities later gave permission for the students to be dismissed. Authorities are still looking for the suspect.

BEVINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A Cedar Rapids man faces several charges in connection to a brief standoff with authorities on a freeway. The Des Moines Register reports 19-year-old Albert Austin the Third faces multiple charges related to the Tuesday afternoon incident, including operating while intoxicated, reckless driving and attempting to elude. The incident temporarily rerouted traffic for several miles.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque woman has been accused of hitting her boyfriend and using a golf club to repeatedly strike a car. The Telegraph Herald reports 21-year-old Cynthia Pendleton was arrested Tuesday afternoon. She faces charges of assault while displaying, child endangerment and third-degree criminal mischief.

Lenox Police release photos of break-in suspects

Police in Lenox have released photos of two suspects and a possible get-a-way vehicle, in connection with a January 26th break-in at the Lenox Public Library. Authorities believe the suspects are the same persons who broke into the Prescott Library, the Afton Fitness Center and several other area locations that night.breakin 1breakin2

One man is believed to be five-feet eight-inches tall. He has a stocky build. The other suspect is about six-feet tall, and has a thinner build. Both wore face masks and gloves during the burglary. Their coats were similar to a Carhart coat, and green in color as were their face masks.

Iowa fails to screen felon voters

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa elections officials don’t have a uniform or accurate way to check whether potential voters are ineligible felons and this has led to people being wrongly disenfranchised or wrongly allowed to cast ballots.

In interviews with The Associated Press, state and county officials cite a lack of funding, disparate use of technology at polling places and record-keeping errors. Major shifts in state policy have exacerbated the problem by creating confusion among offenders.

The Iowa Secretary of State has identified three voters who were improperly disqualified as felons in 2012, and is investigating whether there were more. Other felons who should’ve been ineligible were allowed to vote because their status wasn’t discovered until later. Some of them have since been charged with felony election misconduct for illegally voting.
