Des Moines school district appeals emails ruling

News

April 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Des Moines school district wants the Iowa Supreme Court to review a judge’s ruling that allows a former superintendent’s lawsuit to proceed. Judge Glenn Pille ruled last month that emails sent and received by former superintendent Nancy Sebring through her district-issued email account and electronics should have remained confidential.

Her invasion-of-privacy lawsuit argues that the emails were personal and not subject to the state’s open records laws. Des Moines Public Schools says the emails were public records. The case is scheduled to go to trial in November. The Des Moines Register says the school district is arguing that Pille’s ruling could have a “chilling effect” on the release of public records.
