The leader of a large Iowa farm group says the 2014 state legislative session, which wrapped up last Friday, was a successful one for agriculture and funded several much-needed programs. Brian Kemp of Sibley, president of the Iowa Soybean Association, says major victories included passage of energy legislation to boost biodiesel production as well as support for agricultural research. “We had an extension of the biodiesel producer tax credit and E-15 credit, that’s a 2% credit that’s extended for three years,” Kemp says. “They’re certainly showing their support with an increase of almost $1M in ag research to the ag experiment station.”
Legislators also funded the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Iowa State University. He says an important ag program that received significant funding helps producers with technology. “The Iowa Soybean Association On Farm Network was also supported with $400,000 that will help producers do their own research with GPS technology on their own farms,” he says.
Kemp says he’s disappointed lawmakers failed to pass an increase in the state’s gasoline tax, which would have pumped new funding into the state’s fund for repairs to roads and bridges. “This is a very difficult year to get an increase in the fuel tax through, it’s an election year,” he says. “We’re very likely going to bring that back next year and spend some time promoting that through the legislature.” Kemp says House Ag Committee Chairman Josh Byrnes of Osage made great last gasp effort to get transportation needs funded but fell just a bit short as time ran out.

In an update to our story posted Sunday morning on KJAN.com, the Iowa State Patrol reports two people were injured, one of the critically, during a motorcycle accident late Sunday morning on Interstate 29. Authorities say two motorcycles were traveling north on I-29 near the intersection with I-680 south of Missouri Valleyat around 11:40-a.m., when a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 57-year-old Lawrence James Clark of Asheboro, NC went out of control due to the high winds, and landed on its side.
Another motorcycle driver, 69-year-old Frank Ballard Hibbs, also of Asheboro, was unable to avoid Clark’s cycle. Hibbs’ 2006 Honda motorcycle ran over the top of the Clark and his cycle. The impact caused Hibbs to lose control and crash his motorcycle. Hibbs suffered life threatening injuries and was flown by LifeNet helicopter to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha. Clark suffered minor injuries. The patrol says both drivers were wearing helmets.
I-29 northbound was closed for about 90-minutes during the crash investigation, which remains on-going. The Iowa State Patrol was helped at the scene by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s office, Missouri Valley Fire & Rescue and Crescent Fire and Rescue.

Police in Red Oak report three arrests late Sunday evening and Sunday night. Officials say at around 5:23-p.m., 49-year old Richard Tamez Delgado, of Red Oak, was arrested on charges of Serious Assault and Interference with Official Acts. Delgado was booked into the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.
At around 9:10-p.m., Sunday, Red Oak Police arrested 35-year old Todd Thomas Silk, of Red Oak, on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. Silk was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.
And, at about 11:30 Sunday night, 30-year old Zachariah Michael Holland was arrested on an active Red Oak Police Dept. warrant for Failure to Appear in court on a 5th Degree Theft charge. Holland was also charged with Theft in the 5th degree/shoplifting, Violation of a No Trespass Order, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail and held on $300 bond.
A man from Adams County was injured during a motorcycle accident Sunday night. Sheriff’s officials say 23-year old Mick Lee Coleman, of Corning, was treated for his injuries at Alegent Health in Corning, and then released from the facility. Authorities say Coleman was traveling east on 190th Street at around 8:12-p.m., when he lost control of the 1983 Honda CX-650 motorcycle he was driving.
The cycle crossed the center line of the road and crashed into the south ditch near 190th and Quince Avenue, in Prescott.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina drove in two runs with a two-out single in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped out of an offensive funk with a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night. The defending National League champions had lost four of five to fall a game below .500. The Cardinals scored all their runs with two outs.
Molina, moved into the No. 2 spot to jump start the lineup, was 0 for 4 before coming through in the ninth. Kevin Siegrist got the win in relief, while Trevor Rosenthal picked up his eighth save in as many opportunities despite a scare in the ninth inning.
Hector Randon took the loss for the Cubs, who were attempting to win four straight games for the first time since July.
