East Mills boys and Treynor girls win at Underwood track meet

The Underwood Eagle Co-Ed Invitational track meet was held Friday, and by the end of the day the Treynor girls and East Mills boys were winners in team scoring. The East Mills boys earned 140 points to edge out Treynor 138. Underwood had 104 while Fremont-Mills finished with 102 points.
Treynor’s Nick Paulsen won the 800, Trey Castle was victorious in the 1600 and Brett Dalley won the 400 hurdles. Treynor also had wins in the 4×200, 4×800 and distance medley relay.

On the girl’s side, Treynor finished with 194 points to Underwood’s 128. Fremont-Mills had 92 to take third. Kelsey Hurley took home wins for Treynor in the 200 and high jump, and Taryn Williams leaped to victory in the 100 hurdles. The Knights also won the 4×100, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays. Treynor’s Callie Calfee won the 400 and long jump while the Cardinals also won the 4×200.

Iowa letter carriers ready to stamp out hunger

Letter carriers across Iowa will be doing more than delivering the mail today (Saturday) — they’ll also be picking up donations for food pantries. Harley Tapper, the postmaster in Webster City, says the annual Stamp Out Hunger day was started 22 years ago. “It’s the largest (food drive) in the country…and millions of pounds of food get collected and distributed,” Tapper says. Nationwide, letter carriers collected 74.4 million pounds of food items during last year’s Stamp Out Hunger day. Iowans can help the effort by leaving canned food for their mail carrier to pick up.

“We ask for people to put non-perishable food items in a bag by their mailbox or mail receptacle,” Tapper says. Since the National Association of Letter Carrier’s food drive began in 1992, nearly 1.3 billion pounds of food has been collected.

Glenwood man arrested on kidnapping and other charges

Police in Glenwood said Friday a local man has been arrested on sexual abuse, kidnapping and indecent contact with a child, charges.

66-year-old Daniel Logan Walden, of Glenwood, was arrested on a charge of 1st degree kidnapping, two counts of 2nd degree sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child. Walden is accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 after luring the child into his residence.
An investigation into the incident continues. Authorities are asking anyone who may additional information regarding Walden’s alleged activities to contact Glenwood Police Officer Rose Ives or Police Chief Eric Johansen at 712-527-9920.

Chiefs still on lookout for wide receiver help

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – After spending their first two picks on defense, the Kansas City Chiefs might finally turn their attention to helping their offense on the final day of the NFL draft. The Chiefs selected Auburn pass rusher Dee Ford in the first round Thursday night, and Rice defensive back Phillip Gaines in the third round, their lone pick on Friday night.

The biggest hole still remaining on the roster appears to be wide receiver, one of the deepest positions in the draft. But the Chiefs could also use depth along the offensive line after losing three players who started games last season to free agency.

Kansas City has four picks today (Saturday), the final day of the draft.

USDA: US corn yields to offset lesser acreage

ST. LOUIS (AP) – A U.S. government report says the nation’s corn growers should have banner production this year despite lesser acreage devoted to the grain. But corn prices later in the year may suffer a bit. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released Friday its first World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report of the year. The report estimates that corn producers will harvest 165.3 bushels of corn per acre, up 6.5 bushels from the previous year. Corn acreage is expected to slip to 91.7 million acres, from 95.4 million acres.

The report is the USDA’s best guess of agricultural expectations, and weather events might dramatically change the forecasts. The season-average price for corn was forecast lower, ranging from $3.85 and $4.55 per bushel. It was $4.50 to $4.80 a year earlier.

LARRY WARRIOR, 81, of Fontanelle, died Fri., May 9th, at the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center in Creston. Memorial services for LARRY WARRIOR will be 11-a.m. Wed., May 14th, at the Fontanelle United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13th, at the United Methodist Church in Fontanelle from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

A luncheon will be held at the church Wednesday, following the military rites conducted by the Fontanelle American Legion Carlson Post No. 247.

Memorials may be directed to the Larry Warrior memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

His wife – Judy Warrior of Fontanelle.

His children – Rod Warrior of Fontanelle; George Warrior and wife Valerie, of Greenfield; Gary Warrior and wife Chris, of Papillion, Nebraska; Julie Hartman and husband Jeremy of Greenfield, and Jim Warrior and wife Brandi of Fontanelle.

His brother – Robert Warrior and wife Mary Lou of Fontanelle.

His sister – Joy Green of Fontanelle.

16 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren;  other relatives and friends.

Walker powers Pirates to 6-4 win over Cardinals

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Neil Walker had three hits, including a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning, and drove in four runs to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Friday night. Walker’s seventh homer came off Carlos Martinez (0-2) and rallied the Pirates from a 4-3 deficit for their third straight victory. Pittsburgh beat St. Louis for the 10th time in 13 games at home.

St. Louis had gone ahead in the top of the seventh on Jhonny Peralta’s solo home run, his eighth. Allen Craig’s three-run home run, his fourth, accounted for the Cardinals’ other runs. Justin Wilson (1-0) struck out the only batter he faced, Matt Adams, to end the top of the seventh. Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Houston drafts TE Fiedorowicz in 3rd round

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans have selected Iowa tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz with the first pick of the third round. Despite their need at quarterback, the Texans have drafted defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the No. 1 overall pick and guard Xavier Su’a-Filo in the second round before picking up Fiedorowicz with the 65th overall pick.

Fiedorowicz had 30 receptions for 299 yards and six touchdowns last season. Houston re-signed tight end Garrett Graham this offseason, but lost tight end Owen Daniels in free agency.

Browns take Iowa LB Kirksey in 3rd round

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Still ignoring an apparent need for a wide receiver, the Cleveland Browns selected Iowa linebacker Christian Kirksey in the third round of the NFL draft. Kirksey was taken with the No. 71 overall pick on Friday night. The 6-foot-1, 233-pound Kirksey is expected to play inside linebacker for Cleveland. He had 105 tackles last season, playing outside linebacker for the Hawkeyes. He made 38 starts and played in 49 games in college.

Earlier, the Browns selected Nevada offensive tackle Joel Bitonio at No. 35. The Browns lack receiver depth and there is a report that Pro Bowler Josh Gordon is facing a possible suspension for failing a drug test. There were seven wide receivers taken in the second round. Cleveland had four picks remaining.
