Nebraska GOP chairman, SW Iowa town at odds

News

July 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party and officials in Red Oak, Iowa, each say the other should pay to tear down an abandoned and deteriorating church in the southwestern Iowa community. The Omaha World-Herald reports that a company headed by Nebraska GOP Chairman J.L. Spray purchased a tax lien for the 124-year-old church near downtown Red Oak in 2012 and now owns the building.

The city says the building is dangerous and wants Spray to pay to have it demolished. But Spray, a Lincoln attorney, says information provided during the tax sale made it appear that the building was in better shape than it was. He says after failed attempts to work out a compromise that it’s now the city’s responsibility to cover the cost of demolition.

News

July 17th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

There’s been yet another delay in the trial for an Oakland man charged with murder in connection with the death of a rural Cass County woman. Judge Kathleen Kilnoski, Monday, ordered a continuance in the case against 63-year old Robert A. Reynolds. It’s the fourth time his trial date has been changed.

Reynolds was originally set to stand trial July 1st, for the April 8th shooting death of 64-year old Patricia Kinkade-Dorsey. The date was then amended to July 8th, July 22nd, and most recently, to September 30th.

Reynolds is charged with first-degree murder. Three other people in the home at the time the incident occurred were not injured. A criminal complaint says Reynolds acknowledged shooting Kinkade-Dorsey after an argument. He’s pleaded not guilty.
