GRAETTINGER, Iowa (AP) – A participant in an annual bicycle ride across Iowa has died due to a medical condition. Bob Libby, medical director for The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, told The Des Moines Register the 63-year-old man died Monday while riding near Graettinger, a small northern Iowa city in Palo Alto County. His name wasn’t released.

Libby says he didn’t know the cause of death, but that is was due to a medical condition and not a traumatic injury. A trauma surgeon, nurse and others cared for the man, who was taken to Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, where he died.

ACSD School Registration letter available online

News

July 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Atlantic Community School District (ACSD) have announced information with regard to registration for the 2014-2015 school year is available online at http://www.atlanticiaschools.org/

In the letter, Superintendent Mike Amstein says “For the 2014-15 school year, Atlantic Community School District will continue to utilize the “rollover” registration process with JMC, the district’s student information system. By using the “rollover” registration process it will alleviate the long lines for school registration at the high school each August. The “rollover” registration process assumes that every student enrolled in the ACSD at the end of this school year will be attending school in the fall of the next school year. This means that you will not have to register student(s) for the upcoming school year, if they attended ACSD this school year (2013-14) and were still in attendance as of the last day of school for this past school year (May 27, 2014).”

Amstein goes on to say “Students, who are NEW to the school district and are planning to enroll for the 2014-15 school year will need to register for school at our school buildings, which are open during the summer or access the school registration forms located online at the district’s website, www.atlanticiaschools.org. All of the necessary registration forms are posted on the right hand side of district’s website or are available at each school building.”

Other information in the letter pertains to student fees which need to be paid for the upcoming school year. The district is now utilizing RevTrak instead of PaySchools to collect fees and to pay for lunch. By using RevTrak, there will NO longer be a $2.00 transaction fee for online credit card payments.  The free and reduced application can be found on the Registration website.

If you want more detailed instructions on how to register online, please follow the instructions provided to you on the ACSD website If you don’t have access to a computer, please stop by your student’s school.

July 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA)is reminding small, non-farm businesses in 70 Iowa counties and neighboring counties in Illinois and Missouri that they have until August 11th, 2014, to apply for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). These loans are to offset economic losses because of reduced revenues to farmers and ranchers caused by drought that occurred from August 27 – October 28, 2013, in the following primary counties.

Primary Iowa counties in this area include: Adair, Audubon, Carroll, Crawford, Dallas, Guthrie, Madison, Sac, Shelby, and Union. Neighboring area counties eligible to apply for an EIDL include: Adams, Cass, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Ringgold and Taylor.

Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance.

Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency (FSA) about the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration. However, in drought disasters nurseries are eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure Web site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.
For owners of impacted small businesses, disaster loan information and application forms are also available from SBA’s Customer Service Center by calling toll-free at (800) 659-2955 or e-mailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. For more information about SBA’s disaster assistance programs, visit http://www.sba.gov/disaster.

The deadline to apply for these loans is August 11, 2014.
