LaVERNE JOY DEWITT, 84, of Red Oak (& formerly of Griswold), died Thu., Aug. 28th, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Funeral services for LaVERNE DEWITT will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Sept. 2nd, at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold.

An open visitation will be held on Monday at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold.

Interment will be in the Whipple Cemetery.

LaVERNE DEWITT is survived by:

Her children: Richard DeWitt of Shenandoah; Michael DeWitt of Red Oak, and Deb Jespersen of Red Oak.

Her brothers – Gyle Tye of Glenwood, and Jack Tye of Griswold.

Her sisters – Gloria Arnold of St. Charles, IL, and Suzanne Harder of Greenfield.

8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUES TO DRIFT NORTH AND EAST ACROSS SOUTHWEST IOWA FROM NEAR CLARINDA TOWARD THE INTERSTATE 80 CORRIDOR BETWEEN AVOCA AND STUART. THE STORMS WILL BE RELATIVELY SLOW MOVING AND QUITE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING TORRENTIAL RAINS WITH PONDING WATER ON ROADS AND RAPID RISES IN SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS. RAINFALL RATES MAY REACH ONE TO TWO INCHES PER HOUR. THE STRONGER STORMS MAY ALSO PRODUCE SMALL HAIL AND WIND GUSTS TO 40 MPH.

AVOID DRIVING THROUGH STANDING WATER OR FLOODED AREAS. SLOW DOWN AND DISENGAGE CRUISE CONTROL IN HEAVIER RAINS AND BE AWARE OF HYDROPLANING.

* AT 750 PM CDT…DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED HEAVY RAIN DUE TO THUNDERSTORMS MOVING THROUGH THE REGION. THIS MAY CAUSE SMALL STREAM FLOODING IN THE ADVISORY AREA. UP TO TWO INCHES OF RAIN HAVE ALREADY FALLEN IN RURAL AREAS…AND AN ADDITIONAL ONE HALF TO ONE INCH OF RAIN MAY STILL OCCUR AS THESE STORMS EXIT TO THE NORTHEAST.

LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE…

VILLISCA…STANTON…GRANT AND VIKING LAKE STATE PARK.

Audubon Special Council Meeting Cancelled

Audubon City Attorney Dave Wiederstein said late Thursday afternoon, that a special meeting of the Audubon City Council scheduled for Thursday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m., is cancelled. The purpose of the meeting was to vote on and approve a Remediation Plan that was revised from the prior version approved by the Council in May. A Remediation Plan is an explanation as to how the Council is going to fix past violations and prevent future violations of open meetings law.

The revisions consisted of removing “action items” to be performed by the City Council that IPIB does not have the authority to enforce. In order for a Remediation Plan to be considered and approved by IPIB, all of the complainants-Francine O’Brien Andersen, Dawn Rohe, and Jessica Rohe-need to agree to the Plan. One of the complainants, Dawn Rohe, asked to be removed as a complainant because she no longer lives in the City of Audubon.

Wiederstein said he hadn’t received a response from O’Brien-Andersen, and Jessica Rohe informed him that she will not agree to the Plan. The Council can vote to approve it, but if not everyone is in agreement, then the Remediation Plan will not be considered by IPIB.

Wiederstein said he does not know how much longer IPIB will wait for a Remediation Plan to be agreed to but he will be in discussion with IPIB regarding the matter.

E. WALLACE “WALLY” DICK, 89, of Stuart died Wednesday, August 27th at the Stuart Community Care Center.  Funeral services for E. WALLACE “WALLY” DICK will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd at 10:00 am in the Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.  Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow the service in the Fairview Cemetery.

BETTY MAE FENN, 84, of Oakland, formerly of Carson died on Wednesday, August 27th at the Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.  Services for BETTY MAE FENN will be held on Saturday, August 30th at 2:00 pm at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson who is in charge of the arrangements.

Burial in the Carson Cemetery.

Drake prepares for Grand View

A new era begins at Drake on Saturday night when the Bulldogs host Grand View. It will be the first game for new head coach Rick Fox, who took over after Chris Creighton left for Eastern Michigan. Grand View beat Drake 21-16 enroute to a 14-0 record and the NAIA championship.

Fox is expecting another game that comes down to the end. This is the fifth meeting in a series that Fox says has become a good rivalry. It will also be the final game in the series. Grand View is joining the Heart of America Conference next season and their entire schedule will be league games.

Drake has 15 starters back from last year’s team that finished 6-5.
