One week from Halloween, paranormal group meets in Omaha/Council Bluffs

News

October 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

They don’t like the term “ghostbusters,” but groups from Iowa and Nebraska who try to track down evidence of spirits floating among us will be taking part in an event in Omaha/Council Bluffs later this week. The gathering is the 4th Annual Paranormal Summit and it’s scheduled for Friday, one week before Halloween. Sara Gray, a member of the Omaha Paranormal Society, is organizing the event. “We are going to have several presentations by local paranormal investigation teams,” Gray says. “After that, we have a psychic medium who’s going to be speaking and we’re going to go around campus and do an investigation.”

The summit will be held on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, which some believe is a hotbed for ghostly appearances. “All of campus is said to be haunted but the one that’s really been focused on in the past few years has been the Arts and Science Building,” Gray says. “Directly outside of the building about 50 years ago, a girl was shot and killed and the murder is still unresolved. Her ghost is said to still haunt the Arts and Science Building so that’s the focused area.”

Several teams are operating in Iowa and Nebraska which use a host of modern technology to try and find the answers to age-old questions about the existence of ethereal beings. “They’re going to present their most astounding evidence that they have gotten in the past few years,” Gray says. “It should be really interesting. Some of them are using new equipment so they might show off a little bit of that.”

The summit is open to anyone and begins at 6 P-M Friday at the Milo Bail Student Center on the U-N-O campus. There is an admission charge.

Huckabee campaigns for Ernst

News

October 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The winner of the 2008 Iowa Republican Caucuses was in Iowa Tuesday campaigning for U-S Senate candidate Joni Ernst. Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee campaigned in Sioux City, where he says electing Ernst to the Senate is not only important for Iowa, but also for the whole nation. “She’ll be the first woman to be elected as any member of the Congressional delegation in all of Iowa. But it’s not just because she is a female that she deserves to be elected,” Huckabee says. “That’s important, I think women should have far greater representation in the House and Senate and executive offices across the land. This isn’t about electing her just because of her gender. This is about electing her because of her superior ideas and qualifications.”

Huckabee says if Republicans gain control of the Senate that means legislation will actually make it through Congress. “Harry Reed has created nothing less than the Roach Motel of the U-S Senate, where bills go in but they never come out,” Huckabee says. He says some 360 bills have passed, but they have never left Reed’s office for discussion, debate or a vote.

It was the first of two stops for Huckabee and Ernst, as they also campaigned in Council Bluffs.

Change in IRS regulations benefits farmers hit by drought

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 22nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A recent change by the Internal Revenue Service gives farmers who have been hit by drought a little more time for recovery. I-R-S spokesman, Christopher Miller, says the agency has changed the rules when it comes to livestock losses. He says farmers often sell off livestock during drought conditions, and in order to take advantage of tax conditions under the law, they have to replace the sold off livestock within a specified time. Miller says that time limit had been four years, but the I-R-S has extended the deadline another year for those who were facing a December 31st deadline this year.

“And that also means that impacted farmers can defer taxes on capital gains on that sale of the livestock,” Miller points out. The I-R-S regulations say the one-year extension applies to capital gains realized by eligible farmers and ranchers on sales of livestock held for draft, dairy or breeding purposes due to drought. Sales of other livestock, such as those raised for slaughter or held for sporting purposes, and poultry are not eligible.

“If you are a farmer in Iowa impacted by drought conditions over the last few years, you will have an extension of time to replace the livestock that you had to get rid of because of those conditions. And you also have an extension of time to defer any taxes that you get because of the gain in selling that livestock,” according to Miller. Miller urges Iowans to check to see if they qualify under the extension.

“To learn more, farmers simply need to read the I-R-S publication, 2-2-5, and that’s available on our website irs.gov and we’ll also have a notice there that outlines the affected counties in Iowa,” Miller says. He says you should be able to find all the information you need on the website.
