Logan-Magnolia finishes 2nd at Girls 1A State Cross Country

The Logan-Magnolia girls cross country team finished as runner-up at the Girls 1A State Meet on Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Panthers scored 121 points, behind only South Winneshiek with 104. Madison Sporrer led the way with a 5th place individual finish in a time of 19:30.84. Courtney Sporrer came in 11th with a time of 19:59.37.

Stefi Beisswenger of Audubon finished 18th, Olivia Spurling of Earlham was 20th, and Addison Murdock of Woodbine finished 22nd.

ACGC boys earn 1A State Cross Country Championship

The ACGC Chargers grabbed a State Championship at the Boys 1A Cross County Meet on Saturday in Fort Dodge. The Chargers scored 75 points to grab the crown, 37 points clear of runner-up Maquoketa Valley. Trevin Suhr led the charge with a 4th place finish in 16:38.86 and the rest of their squad went as follows: Andrew Mahaffey 17th, Justin Reinhart 21st, Kaden Thompson 22nd, Bo Arrasmith 56th, Noah Kading 73rd, and Lance Bunde 80th.

Earlham placed 3rd with 134 points and the Cardinals had the top two runners. Jayden Dickson won a State Title with a time of 16;06.46 and Dominic Braet was runner-up with a time of 16:18.50.

Collin Lillie of St. Albert grabbed 8th place. Boyer Valley’s Patrick Heffernan went 10th.

Positive COVID-19 tests are up slightly in Iowa, but hospitalizations are lower

(DES MOINES, Iowa/KCCI) —Iowa Department of Public Health data released Friday shows positive COVID-19 tests are up slightly in the state, while hospitalizations have dipped below 500 for the first time in two months. On Friday, IDPH reported 6,484 positive tests in the last seven days, up from 6,340 at the last report on Monday. Iowa’s 14-day test positivity rate remains at 8%.

There are currently 494 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 531 on Wednesday. Of those hospitalized with COVID-19, 68.5% are unvaccinated, while 82.8% of those listed in intensive care with COVID-19 are unvaccinated. The number of long-term care facilities with a virus outbreak in the state is now at 27, down from 30 on Wednesday.

There have been 3,690,242 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Iowa, with 67.7% of those 18 and older fully vaccinated and 70.1% of those 12 and with at least one dose.

Audubon School Board Special Session set for Monday night

(Audubon, Iowa) – A Special Session of the Audubon School District’s Board of Education will be held 7-p.m. Monday (11/1), in the High School Board Room.

On the agenda is a review of the Oct. 20, 2021 bids received for the Audubon Middle School/High School Interior Renovation Re-bid, and approving the Issuance of Contracts for Bid Packages 1-through 4, with Alternates.

The Board may also take action on: “Approximately $7,600,000 [$7.6-million] School Infrastructure Sales, Services and Use Tax Revenue and Refunding Bond, Series 2021 – A Resolution to Authorize the Sale and Issuance of School Infrastructure Sales, Services and Use Tax Revenue and Refunding Bonds and Approving the Official Statement.”

 

Atlantic Alum McDermott honored by NSAA with weekly award

Atlantic Alum Cooper McDermott was honored earlier this week by the North Star Athletic Association as the Football Offensive Player of the Week.

McDermott helped lead Dakota State to a 53-15 rout of Iowa Wesleyan on October 23rd in Madison, SD. The sophomore receiver had 7 catches for a career-high 130 yards, including a 71-yard reception late in the second quarter. He also completed one pass in the contest.

His teammate Jay Skogerboe was chosen as Special Teams Player of the Week. Dakota State is 5-3 overall and 4-2 in league play. The Trojans are off this week before a road trip to Valley City State University on November 6th.

McCreedy helps Iowa Central XC grab 18th straight regional title

Atlantic alum Taylor McCreedy placed fourth and the Iowa Central Tritons women’s cross country team won their 18th straight regional title on Friday in Waterloo, beating out Iowa Western by 4 points. The Tritons had both the men’s and women’s squads win the Region XI Championships for the ninth consecutive season.

Iowa Central will now turn its attention to November 13 and the NJCAA Div. I Championships in Richmond, Virginia. The Triton men won the national title a year ago while the women were champions two seasons ago but forced to miss 2021 due to COVID-19.

ACGC moves to the quarterfinals with win over South Central Calhoun

The ACGC Chargers will get another crack at top-ranked Van Meter after taking down South Central Calhoun 34-13 on Friday night in the second round of the 1A Playoffs.

The Chargers broke out to a 20-0 lead in the first half and never really let the Titans get into the game. Gavin Cornelison pounded out 176 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns and Charlie Crawford added 54 yards and two more scores for the Chargers.

ACGC improves to 9-1 on the season and continue to enjoy their best season to date. Their only loss this season came on the road against top-ranked Van Meter 41-7 and they will now get another crack at the Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round.

Audubon storms past top ranked Montezuma

The Audubon Wheeler are on to the Quarterfinals in the 8-Player football playoffs after a dominating win over top-ranked Montezuma 63-14.

The Wheelers took control of the game early, outscoring the Braves 21-6 in the first quarter and building the lead to 42-6 by halftime.

Gavin Smith had a brilliant night on the ground with 301 yards and 6 touchdowns. Braden Wessel led the defense with 7.5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss, he also ran a punt back for a score. Audubon kept Montezuma star quarterback Eddie Burgess in check and the Braves finished 43 points below their average point total.

Audubon moves 9-1 and are on to the Quarterfinals for the third straight season They will now get a shot at their second Semifinal appearance in the past three seasons when the travel to Wayland next Thursday to face a 10-0 WACO squad.
