EVA LUCILLE PELZER, 96, of West Lafayette, IN (& formerly of Atlantic), died Fri., June 14th, at the home of her daughter in West Lafayette. Funeral services for LUCILLE PELZER will be held 2:30-p.m. Fri., June 21st, in the chapel at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

There is no scheduled visitation.

Burial will be in the Brighton Township Cemetery at Marne.

LUCILLE PELZER is survived by:

Her daughter – Rosalie (Thomas) Bambrey, of West Lafayette, IN.

Her sons – Robert (Karen) Pelzer, of Thornton, CO, & Jerry (Ute) Pelzer, of Vista, CA.

5 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren.

GERDA DIERSEN, 63, of Manning, died Tue., June 18th, at her home. Funeral services for GERDA DIERSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., June 21st, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call from 5-to 8-pm on Thu., June 20th, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

GERDA DIERSEN is survived by: 

Her husband – Zane Dierson, of Manning. 

Her children – Veronia Moyle, of Ely, IA; Zachary Diersen, of Solon; Yolanda Christensen, of Johnston; (Daughter) Jacinta, of McKinney, TX; Nicholas Diersen, of Manning; and Zane Diersen, of Grimes. 

18 grandchildren, here in-laws and other relatives.

BERNARD M. WOLF, 88, of Harlan, died Sat., June 15th, in Harlan. Funeral services for BERNARD WOLF will be held 10-a.m. Thu., June 20th, at the 1st United Methodist Church, in Harlan. Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wed., June 19th, from 1-until 9-p.m., with the family present to greet friends from 6-to 8-pm.

Burial will be in the Linden Cemetery at Rock Port, MO.

His wife – Shirley Wolf, of Harlan.

His son – Michael (Erin) Wolf, of Gildden.

His daughter – Deborah (Stephen) Jurshak, of Murray, IA.

AZ man arrested on alcohol & drug charges in Montgomery County

Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County report the arrest early this (Tuesday) morning of an Arizona man on alcohol and drug charges. 37-year old Charles L. Harding III, of Yuma, AZ,  was arrested at around 2-a.m. on a charge of OWI/1st offense, and Possession of Controlled Substance/Marijuana. Harding was brought to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $1,000 cash bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad says the rules governing school start dates in Iowa are “too lax.” Branstad told reporters yesterday that the existing policy hurts summer tourism in the state.

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) — Police in central Iowa say a 13-year-old boy led officers on a weekend car chase through a residential area. Ankeny police say the boy drove the car with a flat tire early Sunday morning over curbs and around 50 miles per hour in a residential area. The chase ended after the boy crashed the car into a tree. He was taken to a hospital for a minor injury to his face.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A long-closed dog racing track in Waterloo would become the headquarters for a trucking company under plans released by the business. Waterloo-based Warren Transport president Dick Donnelly says the company hopes to close on the purchase of the former Waterloo Greyhound Park by August. The company then would build its headquarters at the 64-acre site near the intersections of U.S. highways 20 and 63.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A 50-year-old Dubuque man has pleaded guilty to selling heroin to someone who died from the drug. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said yesterday that Alvin Briggs, Junior was convicted after admitting Thursday that he sold $100 worth of heroin in July 2012 to an individual identified in court filings only as S.R., who died as a result of the drug.

Bluffs man stabbed by garden trowel will recover

Police in Council Bluffs say a man stabbed with a garden trowel Monday evening suffered non-life threatening injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery. Officials say someone allegedly stabbed 21-year old James Augustine, of Council Bluffs, in the back and slashed his upper lip with the tool. The incident happened just before 6-p.m. inside a home at 18 North 34th Street.  Augustine was taken to Jennie Edmundson Hospital by Council Bluffs Rescue for treatment of his injuries.

Police say the person responsible fled the scene.  The victim’s uncle, 42-year old Kenneth Augustine, is a person of interest in the case. The incident remains under investigation.

Ag Sec Vilsack calls for immigration reform as a way to help farming & rural states like Iowa

U-S Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is calling on Congress to pass an immigration reform bill, asserting it would bring a variety of benefits to the ag industry and to rural states like Iowa. Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, spoke with reporters Monday in a conference call about the start of National Small Business Week.  “As we deal with comprehensive immigration reform, we look for the benefits of trying to fix a broken system,” Vilsack says. “One of the benefits is that immigrants come here with a dream and come here with a hope of a better life and one way that they can do that is by being their own boss and developing their own business, which is why immigrants are more likely than those who currently live here in the United States to start a small business.”

Just last week, a report from the U-S Census Bureau found Iowa’s largest minority group — Hispanics — is gaining population quickly. New data shows nearly 163-thousand Latinos lived in the state as of last July, an increase of better than three-percent in the previous year. “Certainly in the agricultural area, we’ve had a number of examples of families coming in and starting a small fruit or vegetable production facility and having that expand over time to support multiple families,” Vilsack says. “This is in addition to the benefits that agriculture will receive from the comprehensive immigration reform bill with a stable and secure workforce, a guest worker system that works.”

The secretary says passage of the bill will help create jobs, in addition to more taxpayers who can help the country reduce deficits more quickly. The Census Bureau report found the growth rate for Hispanics in Iowa is ten times faster than the state’s overall population.
