MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — An arctic winter weather system hovering over Iowa has led to several record-breaking cold temperature readings in the state. The National Weather Service says Mason City hit a record low of 18 degrees below zero at 6 a.m. Friday, shattering its 115-year-old record. Waterloo also reached a record low of 24-below zero on Friday. More snow and frigid wind chills were expected overnight into Sunday across much of the state.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque man has been cited on suspicion of reckless driving after police said he drove through the front of a nail salon and caused $10,000 in damages. The Telegraph Herald reports that 37-year-old Devin Stampley was cited after the crash at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Nails for U. No one was injured, even though the business was open and serving customers at the time of the crash.

DECORAH, Iowa (AP) — An eagle watched by the Raptor Resource Project’s Decorah Eagle Cam has laid a third egg this season. The Des Moines Register reports that the third egg was laid just before 7 p.m. Wednesday. That follows the eagle pair’s tradition of laying three eggs every mating season.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — No injuries have been reported from a Cedar Rapids apartment fire that displaced six people. Officials say firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the building around 5:45 a.m. yesterday.

Iowa holds off Penn State in overtime 81-77

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Iowa’s Aaron White scored 21 points, including six free throws in overtime, and the Hawkeyes were able to scrape past Penn State 81-77 on Saturday night. Mike Gesell (14), Gabriel Olaseni (12), Josh Oglesby (12) and Jarrod Uthoff (11) also scored in double figures for the Hawkeyes (19-10, 10-6 Big Ten), who were 25 of 27 from the free-throw line.

D.J. Newbill scored 19 points for Penn State (15-14, 3-13), which has lost 10 Big Ten games by nine points or fewer. Shep Garner added 17 points, Geno Thorpe 14 and Ross Travis 10 for the Nittany Lions.

Iowa won its fourth straight game, is 6-3 in conference road games and 6-2 in February. Penn State has not won since Feb. 7 and finished 1-6 in February games.

KAREN M. CASEY, 62, of Oskaloosa (& formerly of Atlantic), died Fri., Feb 27th, at MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. Per her wishes, her body has been cremated, and no visitation is planned. A private, family Celebration of Life service for KAREN CASEY will be held at a later date. Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa has the arrangements, with assistance from Roland Funeral Service, in Atlantic.

Her sons – Donnie (Renee) Grover, of Murfreesboro, TN, & Cliff Grover, of Des Moines.

Her daughter – Tina (Scott) Van Engelhoven, of Oskaloosa.

Her sister – Mary Lou Smith, of Atlantic.

Her long-time companion: Don Nelson, of Council Bluffs.

MYRTLE MORRIS, 79, of Adair (& formerly of Atlantic), died Sat., Feb. 28th, at her home in Adair. Funeral services for MYRTLE MORRIS will be held 1:30-p.m. Fri., March 6th, at the Roland Funeral Home, in Atlantic.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday thru Thursday, from 8-am to 5:3o-p.m, with the family present on Thursday from 5-until 7-pm. Online condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Burial will be in the Southlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Atlantic.

MYRTLE MORRIS is survived by:

Her sons – Albert (Katy) Morris, of Atlantic; Allen (Rhonda) Morris, of Oakland, & Arnold Morris & fiance’ Lisa Hansen, of Adair.

Her sister – Maude Blodgett, of El Dorado Springs, MO.

Her brother – James Bishop, of Dallas, TX.

Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Iowa State stuns No. 3 Baylor 76-71

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Senior Fallon Ellis scored a career-high 18 points and unranked Iowa State stunned No. 3 Baylor 76-71 on Saturday, handing the Lady Bears their second straight loss after a 26-1 start.
Brynn Williamson added 17 for the Cyclones (18-10, 9-8 Big 12), who knocked off their second top-five opponent this season. Iowa State beat then-No. 3 Texas 59-57 on Jan. 10.

Baylor (26-3, 15-2), which trailed by as much as 10, got within 72-71 with 1:53 left. But Ellis picked up a steal after a Seanna Johnson layup, and Nikki Moody’s layup with 40 seconds left sealed it for the Cyclones.  Nina Davis scored 16 points for the Lady Bears, who dropped consecutive games for just the second time since 2010.

Southern Illinois beats Drake 63-57

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) – Anthony Beane had 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead Southern Illinois to a 63-57 win over Drake on Saturday. Sean O’Brien had 14 points as the Salukis (11-20, 4-14 Missouri Valley) shot 52.1 percent from the field, and now claim the No. 9 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and will face No. 8 Missouri State.

Southern Illinois maintained a double-digit lead until Reed Timmer and Ore Arogundade hit back-to-back 3s to pull within eight with 2:43 left. The Salukis finished 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the final minute. Beane started the game off 4-of-4 shooting, which included three 3-pointers, to help the Salukis jump up to a 23-11 lead in the first half.

Timmer lead the Bulldogs (9-21, 6-12), who made 9 of 18 3-point attempts, with 25 points.

Iwundu’s dunk gives Kansas St 70-69 win over No. 12 Iowa St

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Wesley Iwundu capped a 22-9 scoring run with a two-handed slam that gave Kansas State a 70-69 win over No. 12 Iowa State on Saturday and back-to-back Top 25 wins.  Kansas State (15-15, 8-9 Big 12) tied the game at 66 apiece with a tip-in by Justin Edwards with 59.4 seconds left.  After Iwundu gave Kansas State a 68-66 lead, Monte Morris had a 3-point play to give the Cyclones a one-point advantage.

A bad pass from Georges Niang on a later inbounds pass gave Iwundu the opportunity at redemption for a missed free throw with a two-handed slam. The Wildcats held Iowa State (20-8, 10-6) to 38 percent shooting in the second half, which followed 8-of-15 shooting from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes. Nigel Johnson led Kansas State with 17 points after scoring a career-high 20 points in an upset of No. 8 Kansas on Monday night. Justin Edwards added a season-high 16 points.

Niang led Iowa State with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

Wichita St beats Northern Iowa to win Missouri Valley title

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Ron Baker scored 17 points to help No. 11 Wichita State beat No. 10 Northern Iowa 74-60 on Saturday and win the Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship. Fred VanVleet added 13 points for the Shockers (27-3, 17-1 Missouri Valley) while Tekele Cotton and Evan Wessel scored 11 each. Seth Tuttle scored 16 points to lead Northern Iowa (27-3, 16-2), which had a 16-game winning streak snapped. No other Panther scored in double figures.

Northern Iowa entered the game allowing 53.8 points a game, fourth best nationally. Up 12 at halftime, Wichita State extended its lead in the first five minutes. A Baker layup, VanVleet jumper and Shaquille Morris dunk equaled a quick 6-0 run that give the Shockers a 51-33 lead with 15:20 remaining. The Panthers shot their way back into the game behind the 3-point line, but it wasn’t enough.

Iowa man sentenced to prison for counterfeit credit cards

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Storm Lake man has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison Friday for making and using dozens of counterfeit credit cards. The Sioux City Journal reports that Yoirland Tome-Rojas was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Sioux City. He was convicted in October of two counts of using a counterfeit access device; one count of possessing 15 or more counterfeit access devices; one count of money laundering; and two counts of aggravated identity theft.

Federal prosecutors say Rojas manufactured credit cards and used them to buy gift cards that he would later use to buy various items. At least two of the card numbers he used belonged to people who reported unauthorized use of their credit cards.
