MONONA-HARRISON-SHELBY-POTTAWATTAMIE-MILLS-MONTGOMERY-FREMONT-PAGE COUNTIES IN IOWA…420 PM CDT SAT MAY 16 2015

TONIGHT AND SUNDAY: THERE WILL BE SEVERAL CHANCES FOR SEVERE STORMS THROUGH THE EVENING ACROSS EASTERN NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA. STORMS DEVELOPING ALONG THE MISSOURI RIVER AT LATE AFTERNOON COULD PRODUCE HAIL OR DAMAGING WINDS IN WEST CENTRAL IOWA. MORE STORMS IN NORTHEAST KANSAS WILL TRACK INTO SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA AS WELL…AND COULD ALSO PRODUCE LARGE HAIL OR DAMAGING WINDS. THERE IS ALSO A SMALL CHANCE FOR AN ISOLATED TORNADO AS LOW LEVEL WIND SHEAR IS MAXIMIZED IN SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA.

MORE THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING IN SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS AND FARTHER SOUTH ARE EXPECTED TO RACE NORTHEAST DURING THE EVENING. THESE STORMS COULD MOVE INTO SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA AND SOUTHWEST IOWA AT MID TO LATE EVENING BRINGING A DAMAGING WIND THREAT TO THOSE AREAS. AN INCREASING LOW LEVEL JET WILL ALSO PROVIDE NECESSARY SHEAR TO KEEP A SMALL TORNADO RISK IN THE FORECAST.

Lavon and Miss NiNi talk about making smoothies.

Miss NiNi’s Smooth-A-Roothie

Ingredients:

1 c. milk (dairy, soy milk, or nut milk)
¼ c. juice (I use orange juice)
2 oz. toasted English walnuts
1 T. chia seed
2-3 T. chocolate protein powder
1/2 oz. fresh spinach leaves (small hand full)
¼-1/2 c. fresh or whole frozen fruit (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, mango, banana, peaches or apricots with skin removed)

Method:

Put all ingredients into a blender container in the order listed above. Blend until very smooth. Makes about 14 ounces. May need a straw with an extra-wide opening if ingredients have not been chopped very finely. If you like “chew” in a smoothie, you will love this!

Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie—iowagirleats.com

Ingredients:

½ c. milk
1 c. sliced strawberries (about 9 strawberries) fresh or frozen
½  banana
2 heaping Tablespoons raw cashews
½ t. vanilla extract
¼ t. lemon zest
½ c. ice

Method:

Add ingredients to blender listed in the order above. Blend until very smooth.

NOTE from Miss NiNi: I used lightly salted and roasted cashews. Lemon zest leaves a lingering lemon oil flavor on the tongue. A refreshing smoothie.

Cabrera homers, Tigers beat Cardinals 10-4

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Miguel Cabrera ended a season-long slump in night games with a two-run homer and two singles and the Detroit Tigers also got homers from Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Martinez in a 10-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

Cabrera entered batting just .158 with no homers and one RBI at night – he’s hit .471 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in day games. Manager Brad Ausmus called those numbers an “anomaly” before the game.

Cabrera hit his 399th career homer and third in two games in the seventh inning off Mitch Harris, tying Andres Galarraga for most by a Venezuelan-born player, and Martinez followed with his eighth homer to make it 5-0.

Shane Greene (4-2) allowed five hits in five scoreless innings before being removed due to numbness in his pitching arm.
