Cardinals’ catcher Molina: Back by end of regular season

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina said he plans to return before the end of the regular season despite a thumb injury.

Molina sustained a slight tear of his left thumb ligament Sunday while tagging out Cubs’ player Anthony Rizzo in a key play at the plate in the Cardinals’ 4-3 win. Rizzo was thrown out by right fielder Jason Heyward on a no-out, bases-loaded fly for a double play in the eighth inning.

On Tuesday, Molina said he’ll wait five or six days before trying to catch again.

Last year, Molina tore a ligament in his right thumb when sliding and the surgery sidelined him more than seven weeks. When he had his left thumb examined Monday, he said he was relieved the injury wasn’t as severe.

“I was expecting worse,” Molina said. “Five, seven, 10 days, whatever it is, but no surgery. That was good news.”

Molina didn’t have his thumb protected Tuesday, and it appeared slightly swollen. He’s said he’s putting ice on it and waiting for it to heal.

Lackey’s pitching, Pham’s hitting lead Cards over Reds

ST. LOUIS (AP) – John Lackey pitched seven strong innings, rookie Tommy Pham continued his productive hitting and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 Tuesday night.

Lackey (13-9) allowed only a first-inning homer by Jay Bruce during his 16th quality start in 16 outings at Busch Stadium. The veteran right-hander struck out seven, walked none and lowered his home ERA to 1.97.

St. Louis improved to a major league-best 95-56 with its second straight low-scoring victory over Cincinnati. Steve Cishek worked the ninth to earn his first save for St. Louis.

Pham hit a sacrifice fly to deep center in the seventh that scored Tony Cruz and broke a 1-all tie. Pham drove in the Cardinals’ first run with a third-inning double that brought in Matt Carpenter, who doubled with one out. Since moving into the lineup eight games ago, Pham has nine RBIs, eight extra-base hits and is batting .407.

Big Ten might let schools slide on playing Power 5 opponent

Sports

Big Ten schools can petition the conference to waive a requirement in the new football scheduling policy that teams must play one nonconference game against an opponent from one of the other five most powerful leagues.

Associate commissioner Scott Chipman said Tuesday conference officials would decide on a case-by-case basis.

Commissioner Jim Delany in July unveiled the new scheduling model that has each school playing one game against a team from the Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, Big 12 or Pacific-12 conferences or a major independent.

The Indianapolis Star reports that since the new policy was announced, Indiana has received permission from the conference to count games against Connecticut in 2019 and 2020 and Cincinnati in 2021 and 2022 as Power Five opponents.

Ernst discusses Senate’s rejection of 5-month abortion ban bill

News

September 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says she’s “deeply disappointed” legislation that would prohibit almost all abortions after the fifth month of pregnancy was rejected in the U.S. Senate Tuesday. Ernst and other supporters of the House-passed “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” claim 20 weeks into a pregnancy marks a point when unborn babies can feel pain and survive if born prematurely.

“The United States is currently only one of seven countries in the world that allows abortions after five months,” Ernst told Iowa reporters in a conference call after the Senate vote. “We are in the same company as China and North Korea.” The bill needed 60 votes to advance in the Senate. It received the support of 54 Senators, with 42 in opposition.

On Monday night, Ernst took to the floor of the U.S. Senate and was joined by Clayton and Danielle Pickering of Newton and their three-year-old son Micah. Micah was born prematurely at five months. “As Micah proves, babies at five months can survive outside of the womb,” Ernst said Tuesday. “As a mother and a grandmother, I remain committed to urging my colleagues not to deny these babies the right to life.”

Three Senate Democrats supported the bill, while just two Republicans voted against it. Democrats have blasted Republicans over scheduling a vote on an abortion-related bill on the week that Pope Francis visits Capitol Hill and at a time when the House and Senate are trying to negotiate a government funding measure to avoid a shutdown. Many Republicans in the House have vowed to reject a bill to keep the government operating unless it excludes money for Planned Parenthood.
