CARY, N.C. — University of Iowa sophomore Daianne Hayashida wrapped up competition at the 2023 ITA All-American Championships on Sunday morning.    

Hayashida fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to Austin Peay’s Jana Leder in the Round of 64.   

The Hawkeyes will continue their fall competition at the ITA Central Regionals in Lawrence, Kansas, from Oct. 12-16. .

AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team tied Drake, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Softball Complex in a nine-inning exhibition. The Hawkeyes finish the fall season with a record of 5-1-1.

Freshman Mya Clark got the start for Iowa in the circle. She went three innings allowing two runs on four hits. Iowa used the combination of Kelsey Winters, Andrea Jaskowiakand Maren Judisch in the circle the rest of the game. They allowed no runs on four hits and struck out three Drake hitters.

Iowa finished the game with two runs on 10 hits. After falling behind, 2-0, early in the game the Hawkeyes got on the board in the fifth inning as sophomore Avery Jackson came home on a single off the bat of Winters. Iowa rallied late and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double from senior Sammy Diaz.

The Hawkeyes return to action for their annual Black and Gold Series starting on Thursday October 5^th at Bob Pearl Field. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. CT and admission is free.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two first quarter goals lead the top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field. 

Iowa improves to 10-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan State 19-7 and had nine shots on goal to the Spartans two.  

“Friday was very uncharacteristic of us. We needed to have a rebound game, and we got the outcome today so that was great. There are still things we need to still fix and clean up, but we were able to get some goals on that board, so that’s a positive.” 

Senior Alex Wesneski struck first in the sixth minute of the game off an assist from junior Jacey Wittel. 

The Spartans tied the game three minutes later with a goal 8:55 into the game from Ellie Rutherford. 

Freshman Dionne van Aalsum responded off a penalty corner, giving the Hawkeyes the lead in the 12th minute. She was assisted by junior Annika Herbine and junior Lieve Schalk. 

Junior Hillary Cox gave Iowa an insurance goal after a successful penalty stroke in the 41st minute of play. 

OF NOTE…

– The Hawkeyes have allowed six goals in 11 games this season

-Van Aalsum has scored in ten out of 11 games this season and has 23 goals in the 11 games.

– Sophomore Mia Magnotta recorded one save in today’s game, bringing her total to 22 on the season.

AMES, Iowa – After earning their first Big 12 victory of the season, Iowa State returns to the Cyclone Soccer Complex to welcome the sixth-ranked BYU Cougars in the teams’ first-ever meeting. The Cyclones and Cougars will meet on Monday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. and the action will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

ISU (4-7-1, 1-3 Big 12) will face its second set of Cougars on Monday, entering the contest coming off a win over the Houston Cougars on Thursday, 2-1. BYU (9-1-2, 2-0-2 Big 12) tied in its last outing against Cincinnati and at one point, was the number one team in the country.

BYU will be the fourth and final team Iowa State will meet for the first time ever this season. The Cyclones downed both Portland State and Houston but fell to Cincinnati in the previous “first time” meetings this season.

Leading the Cyclones
Iowa State enters the Monday night matchup coming off a 2-1 victory over Houston at home on Thursday. It was just the fourth time ISU has scored 2+ goals in a game and the Cyclones are 3-0-1 in matches where they’ve produced at least two scores.  

Mira Emma leads all Cyclones in goals (4), points (11), shots on goal (14), shots (21) and assists (3). The fifth-year senior captain notched her second career brace in the team’s outing against Portland State.

Fellow seniors Salomé Prat notched her third score of the season as well as her third career game-winning goal against Houston, making her the second-highest scorer for the Cyclones. Prat now has 15 career goals and four as a Cyclone.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan is the lone Cyclone to have played all 1,080 possible minutes this season. She has tallied 32 saves and has faced over 150 shots through 12 contests. Gillahan recorded her second career shutout against Portland State earlier this season.

Scouting BYU
BYU comes to Ames after tying the Cincinnati Bearcats, 1-1, in Provo on Thursday evening. The Cougars outshot Cincy 26-6 but were unable to convert on anything outside of a PK in the 47th minute after giving up a goal to Cincinnati in the second minute of action. 

The Cougars, who spent a pair of weeks ranked as the number one team in the country, have suffered just one setback on the year, falling at Utah State. BYU has defeated No. 21 Saint Louis, No. 1 UCLA, and No. 14 Texas on the year.

BYU averages 3.25 goals per game and is led by a myriad of players on offense. Seven Cougars have 3+ goals on the year, and four have five or more scores. Leading the way is Erin Bailey, who has seven goals, while Olivia Katoa leads the team in points with 15.

Kendell Peterson also plays a big role in the BYU attack, as she has eight assists on the year to lead the team. Peterson’s eight assists are the third most in the conference. The aforementioned Katoa has four game-winning goals, the second most in the Big 12.

Between the sticks, Savanna Mason has gotten the majority of the action as she has started nine matches and owns 21 saves. She is 7-0-1 on the year and holds a 1.24 goals-against-average.

From the Notebook 

• The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
• Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 59% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the ninth-highest ranking in the country.
• Four Big 12 programs are ranked in the Coaches Poll this week, as BYU is No. 6, Texas Tech is ranked 14th, UCF is 19th and Texas is 21st.
• Senior Mira Emma ranks in the top ten in ISU history in points, goals, game-winning goals and assists.
• After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities. Through 12 matches, Gillahan has a pair of shutouts and 32 saves.
• Gillahan earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on August 23rd for her performances during the first week of the season.

AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team shutout Iowa State, 3 -0, on Saturday afternoon at the Cyclone Softball Complex in a nine-inning exhibition.

Sophomore Jalen Adams went the distance in the circle throwing a complete game. She allowed seven hits and struck out five Cyclone hitters. She retired Iowa State in order in five of the innings.

Iowa scored three runs on six hits and two Cyclone errors. Freshman Mya Clark was responsible for all three RBIs in the game. She drew a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the first and had a two-RBI triple in the third inning. The Hawkeyes had a baserunner in all but two innings. Freshman Jena Young went 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Hawkeyes return to action on tomorrow, Sunday October 1 as they face Drake in the final game of the Big Four Classic. First pitch at the Cyclone Softball Complex in Ames is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Iowa volleyball fell to Illinois, 3-0, on Saturday night inside Huff Hall.

The Hawkeyes were led by redshirt freshman Nataly Moravec as she put down 15 kills and dug 10 to register her first double-double of the season. Fifth-year Caitlan Buettner also tallied double-digit kills with 11. Senior Bailey Ortega and freshman Kaia Mateo split the assists with 18 and 16, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Dennis led the defense with 21 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 (Illinois, 28-26): The Hawkeyes kicked off the match on a long run, scoring the first five points. Urquhart posted two service aces, Buettner put down a kill, and Iowa took advantage of two Fighting Illini errors. Illinois battled with its own run, but Iowa was able to keep the lead, 7-4. After a strong offensive front from the Illini, Iowa capitalized off of two errors and two kills from Moravec to tie the set at 11. The back-and-forth battle continued through the end. The Hawkeyes made a late run to take the lead, 24-23, but Illinois pushed ahead to take the set.

Set 2 (Illinois, 25-18): Buettner gave Iowa the advantage with the first point of the set, before the two teams exchanged points, tying at each point through three. Illinois began to pull away, but Moravec, Buettner and McSweeney pushed to keep the Hawkeyes within reach, narrowing the spread to six with the score at 15-9 Illini. Iowa continued to fight, getting within five, but were unable to catch up, and Illinois secured the second set.

Set 3 (Illinois, 28-26): The Hawkeyes once again came out strong, putting two points on the board with an ace from Urquhart and an error from the home team. Illinois retaliated and jumped out ahead, 10-5. Iowa fought back, scoring four consecutively to dwindle the deficit to one, 11-10 Illini. The teams exchanged points before the Hawkeyes were able to score three straight and take the lead, 14-13. The teams went evenly matched, tying at 14, 15, 16, and 17, before Iowa jumped out ahead once again, 19-17, to force Illinois into a timeout. The set continued with even scoring before Illinois was able to put up the final three points to win the set and match.
