AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (5-10-1, 2-6 Big 12) defeated Kansas (3-7-6, 0-6-2 Big 12) by a score of 1-0 on Thursday evening, behind Sophia Thomas’s first goal of the season, notching the team’s third shutout on the year.

The Cyclones and Jayhawks played a scoreless first half which saw Kansas outshoot Iowa State 14-5 across the first 45 minutes of action. KU tallied eight corners to ISU’s one and forced Avery Gillahan to be on the ball, as the redshirt freshman recorded seven saves in the first half.

ISU came out in the second half with their adjustments in mind, tightening down on defense and being more aggressive on the attack. The mindset paid off in the 55th minute, as Thomas – off a feed from Abigail Miller – converted off a right-footed shot into the back left of the net past a diving Kansas keeper.

The score was Sophia’s second of her career which brings her career points up to four. Miller notched her first assist of the year to bring her season point total up to five.

Gillahan recorded a new career-high nine saves on the evening, surpassing her old best of eight against Memphis, on her way to her third career shutout.

Iowa State and Gillahan handled every KU attempt in the second half, forcing most shots to be off-target and saving the two that weren’t. Seven Cyclones came off the bench on the evening as both teams dealt with the cold/windy weather.

Alex Campana and Mira Emma led the team in shots with two apiece as the Cyclones totaled 12 on the night. Kansas had 22 shots, nine of which were on target, but were unable to convert any into points.

For the 14th time this season, Chloe Broughton played all 90 minutes, as Hanna Reid, Olivia Edwards and Miller joined her in the 90-minute club.

“We knew coming in it was going to be a really good, really enjoyable game of football. We knew that someone, and ultimately was us, was going to come out and win the game. We knew it was going to be a bit of a tactical chess game and we knew that at some point one of our players was going to step up and say, ‘Our team wants it more’ and they did and I’m proud of them.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Gold team defeated the Black team, 8-1, in game two of the Black and Gold Series.

The Gold team kept the momentum from game one rolling and scored eight runs on 11 hits. They were able to plate five runs in the third inning on RBIs from four different hitters. Freshman Jena Young and junior Tatianna Roman recorded back-to-back RBI triples in the inning. Young went 2-for-4 for three RBIs in the afternoon. Freshman Soo-Jin Berry recorded two RBIs for the Gold team.

The Gold team used the combination of four different arms in the circle. Despite not giving up a hit in two innings of work, freshman Mya Clarksurrendered one run in the first inning.  The remaining three pitchers of Andrea Jaskowiak, Maren Judisch and Haley Downe allowed no runs on three hits and struck out three.

The Black team also used four arms in the circle. Junior Devyn Greer was the only pitcher to not surrender a run. She started the game and went two innings allowing one hit and struck out three. Freshman Jaylee Ojo also struck out three gold hitters in two innings of work.

The Black team scored their lone run in the opening frame as senior Grace Banes scored on the RBI groundout from Kelsey Winters.  The team was able to reach base on 11 free passes but were unable to capitalize. Banes recorded three walks in the game.

Iowa returns to action next Thursday October 19 for the final game of the Black and Gold Series. First pitch at Bob Pearl Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT. Admission to the game is free.

The Trojan volleyball team put up a good fight, but fell short in 3 straight sets to the St. Albert Saintes. It was pink out night in Atlantic and the energy was present in the gymnasium. The first set saw back and forth action for both teams. Maddie Richter had an ace on the set and Atlantic was close to taking the opening set. St. Albert held on and stayed dominant at the net to take the lead 1-0 with a score of 25-22. Head Coach Michelle Blake was impressed from her teams efforts in the first set.

In the second set St. Albert remained focused and had few errors from the serving line. Atlantic on the other hand had 4 errors and lacked concentration. That would lead the Saintes to take the second set by a score of 25-15. Coach Blake noted the difference in her team from the first set.

In the third the match continued to slip away until near the end when Atlantic started to go on a run. Payton Harter had 2 kills which sparked some energy into the Trojans. In the end, St. Albert held on and won 25-11. Coach Blake saw some positives from her teams loss and has no fear going up against Des Moines Christian.

The Trojans are on the road next Tuesday facing the (34-7) Des Moines Christian Lions in the Class 3A Region 3 Quarterfinals in Des Moines.

The Class A District 3 title is on the line when eighth ranked Wapsie Valley visits Nashua-Plainfield Friday night.

That’s Wapsie Valley Head Coach Duane Foster, who adds that they will treat the matchup as a playoff game.

Nashua-Plainfield Head Coach Andrew Christiansen’s Huskies will face a Warriors defense which has held opponents scoreless in five of their six wins.

While the game is being played on “Friday the 13th,” Christiansen says his team is superstitious for other reasons.

Nashua-Plainfield is 5-2. Wapsie Valley is 6-1.

Rivalries matter in football and a big one in class 2A will close the regular as second ranked Central Lyon-George/George-Little Rock hosts third rated West Lyon. Known as the “Beef Bowl”, the series dates back to 1964 and West Lyon coach Jay Rozeboom says it matters to both communities.

Rozeboom says the Lions cause a number of concerns.

The West Lyon website claims the outcome of the 1968 game in this series is unknown. Rozeboom was asked if anybody has come forward with the result from that year.

There is a chance of rain during the game and Rozeboom says both teams will need to adjust.

Both teams are headed to the playoffs and this could be the first of two meetings but Central Lyon/George Little Rock coach Curtis Eben says Friday’s outcome still matters.

Eben says the West Lyon defense will provide a number of looks and show both a three man and four man front.

Eben says he is not concerned about the possibility of rain.

Eben was asked why there is not a consensus on the score of the 1968 game.

He later sent a link to a page on the Central Lyon website that shows the final score of the 1968 game as Central Lyon 10, West Lyon 7.

It is a one-versus two clash in 5A Friday night when second ranked Dowling Catholic visits top ranked and two-time defending champion Southeast Polk. There could be a second meeting down the road but the winner of this one figures to be the top seed in the playoffs.

That’s Dowling coach Tom Wilson who says the Southeast Polk offense led by quarterback Connor Moberly will be tough to stop.

Rain is possible and both teams may need to deal with the elements.
