Waterfowl refuges closed to any access until duck seasons end

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

December 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa waterfowl refuges are closed to all access until the day after duck season closes. This year the duck season closes later than previous years and the later season dates may impact some deer hunters who have hunted the areas in the past.

Iowa is divided into three waterfowl zones – the north zone, south zone and the Missouri River zone. Duck season closes on Dec. 4 in the north zone, Dec. 15 in the south zone, and Dec. 18 in the Missouri River zone.

These waterfowl refuges are always closed to duck and goose hunting but hunters are allowed to hunt non-waterfowl species in waterfowl refuges after the duck season has closed. Hunters with questions should contact their local wildlife biologist or conservation officer.

Chiefs defensive lineman Jaye Howard goes on injured reserve

Sports

December 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive lineman Jaye Howard has been put on injured reserve with a hip injury. The five-year veteran has been out for several weeks, and the Chiefs decided Thursday that he was unlikely to make it back this season. There was no corresponding roster move made.

Howard signed a two-year deal to remain in Kansas City in the offseason, even though he had a breakout season a year ago. But his season included just 18 tackles and a sack in parts of eight games.

The Chiefs have already lost Allen Bailey to injury this season, and defensive tackle Dontari Poe remained sidelined this week with back spasms. Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Kendall Reyes, Jarvis Jenkins and rookie Chris Jones have been rotating through the line in their place.

Cardinals send LHP Jaime Garcia to Braves for 3 prospects

Sports

December 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have traded left-hander Jaime Garcia to the Atlanta Braves for a trio of prospects, including second baseman Luke Dykstra, the son of former All-Star Lenny Dykstra. The Cardinals also got right-handers John Gant and Chris Ellis on Thursday.

Garcia has spent his entire injury-interrupted career with the Cardinals, going 62-45 with a 3.57 ERA and helping St. Louis win the World Series in 2011. But the 30-year-old was just 10-13 with a 4.67 ERA last season, and jettisoning his $12 million contract for next season gives the Cardinals some flexibility in free agency.

They have already signed reliever Brett Cecil to a four-year, $30.5 million contract, leaving an outfielder the biggest hole remaining on their roster.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

PELLA, Iowa (AP) — An employee of an Iowa Wal-Mart where three people were killed when a truck crashed through a front entrance says two of those killed were his co-workers. Don French, who was off-duty Thursday morning and shopping in the Pella store at the time of the crash, told the Des Moines Register that he heard the crash and rushed to see what had happened. He found severely injured people.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University paid up to $225 per hour to rent an airplane for President Steven Leath to fly himself to meetings even as an older school plane that he piloted sat unused. The university rented the plane from prominent Ames landlord Brent Haverkamp, who was later awarded a lease to store his airplanes in an Iowa State hangar after the school evicted a 17-year tenant. Leath’s plane rentals and relationship with Haverkamp add new layers to the flight scandal that has roiled his presidency.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An insurance company says it will lay off about 120 people at its Cedar Rapids office. Transamerica announced Thursday it would cut the Cedar Rapids job as part of moves that also include the closure of offices in Los Angeles, Folsom, California, and West Chester, Ohio, during 2017. A total of 800 jobs will also be eliminated in other locations, including the Cedar Rapids cuts. Before the layoffs, the Baltimore-based company had about 10,000 employees with 3,500 located in Cedar Rapids.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a 3-year-old boy has died of injuries from a Nov. 22 car crash in downtown Des Moines. Sgt. Paul Parizek says David Reh died Thursday, nine days after the car he was riding in rear-ended a pickup truck, then struck a delivery truck before finally coming to rest in a parking lot. The Des Moines Register reports the boy’s father who was driving, 46-year-old Soh Reh, died earlier from injuries he suffered in the crash.
