CAM Girls stumble to loss, Boys race to win at Essex Monday

The CAM Cougars split a doubleheader at Essex on Monday night.  Essex won the Girls game 51-42. CAM took the Boys game 60-37.

In the Girls game the Essex Trojanettes took an early 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter but CAM would later climb back into the game. The Cougars got the game within 4 points at 28-24 after getting the first bucket of the second half. But that’s when the offense stalled out and the Cougars only managed two more points in the third and fell behind by 14. Essex was led in the game by Junior Guard Daiton Martin who poured in 17 points. Senior Jescenia Mosley had 15 for Essex as the Trojanettes improve to 4-1 on the season.

CAM was led in the loss by Macy Ticknor with 11 points and Paige McAfee with 10.  The Cougars fall to 4-2 with a Tuesday night home meeting with Charter Oak-Ute on tap next.

In the Boys game CAM used their quick transition game to run away with the win. The Cougars jumped out to an early 15-7 lead at the end of 1 and pushed the advantage to 17 points by halftime. The Cougars would continue to slowly pull away in the second half. Thomas Hensley led the way with 18 points and Nic Holste dropped home 13.  The Cougars were also good from the foul line making 11-14 for the game. CAM improves to 2-3 with the win and will be home to Charter Oak-Ute Tuesday night.

Essex was led by Jaymn Vandusen with 13 points in the loss and the Trojans are now 1-5 on the year. The Trojans travel to Stanton on Tuesday night.

The CAM basketball teams are also planning a red out for their home doubleheader on Tuesday night in support of the Audubon Wheeler Community and Steckler family after the fatal accident that took place over the weekend. Fans are encouraged to wear red to show their support and some fundraising will take place that night.

Panel lowers Iowa’s revenue projections by roughly $96M

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state panel has lowered Iowa’s revenue projections for the current budget year by roughly $96 million. The three-member group known as the Revenue Estimating Conference said Monday that Iowa will take in about $7.21 billion during the budget year that began in July. That’s down from a $7.31 billion projection in October.

Iowa Department of Management Director David Roederer said the state’s revenue is growing but not at the expected rate. He pointed to a range of issues but not one key reason. Roederer said the state will need to plug in the deficit when the GOP-controlled Legislature convenes in January.

Ben Hammes, Gov. Terry Branstad’s spokesman, declined to provide details on how that would be achieved. Hammes emphasized that K-12 school funding would not be cut.

Iowans are warned to check over cars before extreme cold arrives

xtremely cold weather is moving into Iowa over the next day or so and forecasters say it’ll stick around at least through the weekend. Auto mechanic Jeff Johnson, in Omaha/Council Bluffs, says now is the time to go through the checklist to make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter ahead. “Look at all your tires and make sure they’re aired up to manufacturer’s specifications,” Johnson says. “Check your wiper blades, check your coolant, make sure all your headlights and brake lights are ready to go. Also, make sure all your belts and hoses are all going to be prepared for any weather condition.”

He adds, you won’t get far if you don’t have good tires, and if you need snow tires, get them on, pronto. “Make sure your tires are properly aired up and that they have a decent amount of tread,” he says. “Winter tires are very important if your vehicle isn’t the safest, maybe a rear-wheel drive and even some front-wheel drive vehicles, it’s a great thing to add to your vehicle.” For some Iowans, the deep freeze will mean their cars won’t start as the frigid weather was too much for the old battery. Johnson says have your battery tested to make sure it has enough cold cranking amps to keep your car starting, even when the wind chill is far below zero.

Glenwood man arrested for being a Fugitive from Justice

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest today (Monday), of 37-year old Aaron Michael Greene. Greene, who’s from Glenwood, was arrested at around 12:20-p.m. at the Mills County Jail, and charged with being a Fugitive from Justice. He remained held in the jail without bond. And, 26-year old Guillermo Torres Jr., of Omaha, was arrested Saturday night on a charge of OWI/1st offense. His bond was set at $1,000.

Burial of Ashes will be in the Neola Township Cemetery in Neola.

CAM travels to Essex for Doubleheader tonight on KJAN

The CAM Cougars travel to Essex for a Varsity Basketball Doubleheader that we’ll have for you tonight on KJAN. The Girls game will get started first at 6:00pm with the Boys to follow around 7:30pm.

In the Girls game the CAM Cougars bring a 4-1 record into the contest against an Essex Trojanettes team that is 3-1. CAM has been lead by a strong group of Sophomores this year led by Madison Gettler who is averaging 15.3 points per game.  Paige McAfee is right behind Gettler dropping in 12.8 points per game so far this season.  Essex is lead by Daiton Martin and Jescenia Mosley who have teamed up to drop in about 31 points per game.

In the Boys contest CAM comes in with a 1-3 record after a close loss to Paton-Churdan on Friday. The Cougars are led by point guard Thomas Hensley who is averaging about 19 points per game. Nic Holste has dropped in 16 points per game for the Cougars as well. Essex  is 1-4 after a Friday loss to Sidney. They have been led in scoring by Seniors Jaymn Vandusen and Gunnar Glasgo.

AP College Football All-America Team announced

No. 1 Alabama placed four players on The Associated Press All-America team, most of any school, and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and fellow Heisman Trophy finalists Jabrill Peppers of Michigan and Dede Westbrook of Oklahoma were also first-team selections.

The Crimson Tide and No. 2 Ohio State tied for the most players on the three All-America teams released Monday with six. No. 3 Clemson had five players on the three teams, but none on the first team. Washington, which has a spot in the College Football Playoff team along with Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson, had two players on the second team.

Jackson won the Heisman Saturday , finishing well ahead of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield. The three quarterbacks lined up similarly on the All-America teams with Watson second-team and Mayfield third-team.

Cass County Extension Reminds Commercial Pesticide Applicators to Call ASAP for Continuing Education Courses

The Cass County Extension office is reminding commercial pesticide applicators that this week is the deadline to call to make sure they can view their required continuing instructional courses (C-CICs) by the end of the year. Cass County Extension is once again hosting these required trainings for local commercial pesticide applicators, but wants to remind anyone who has yet to attend the training that all CIC training must be completed by the end of December. To avoid conflicts with year-end scheduling, Cass County Extension is requiring that all training dates be on the schedule by Thursday, December 15th in order to be honored.

“We know year end is a busy time for all, but we don’t want anyone to miss the opportunity to attend their annual required training, as time to meet those annual requirements is getting short.” shared Kate Olson, Extension Program Coordinator in Cass County. “We do offer trainings on a first-come, first-served basis, and our hours will be slightly different during the holidays, so we’d like to remind folks to call and get their classes scheduled before our year-end calendar fills up!”

According to Olson, reshow dates can occur after December 15th, but they must be on the calendar before then to be honored. To ensure a spot on the training schedule, applicators needing to complete CIC for the year are asked to call prior to December 15th. Applicators calling after this date will NOT be placed on the training schedule. Training dates can be scheduled locally by calling the Cass County Extension office at 712-243-1132 or emailing lander@iastate.edu. For more information on the Commercial Pesticide Applicator program or the CIC classes, please visit www.extension.iastate.edu/psep/ComAp.html. If you plan to attend the training in a different county Extension Office, please call ahead, and do so as soon as possible, because many other counties in the area have similar cut-off dates, but these will vary by office.
