Exira-EHK Grad Evan Hansen wins NAIA National Title, Grand View wins 6th straight team title

Exira-EHK graduate Evan Hansen took the 197 pound NAIA National Wrestling Championship over the weekend in Topeka, Kansas. Hansen defeated Dalton Bailey of Life University 9-7 in Sudden Victory period 1.

It was Hansen’s first time competing at the National Championships and he had to win 4 matches at the tournament to take the title.

Grand View also crowned 4 other National Champions: Jacob Colon (133), Josh Wenger (141), Grant Henderson (165) and Lawton Benna (174).

The Vikings shattered the scoring records that they had previously set on their way to a sixth straight team title. The Vikings racked up 234.5 team points, 160 more than second-place Lindsey-Wilson and 170 more than third-place Campbellsville.

All 12 Grand View Wrestlers finished in fifth-place or better and all earned All-American status with their performances.

 

3 arrests reported in Creston

Officials with the Creston Police Department are reporting three, recent arrests. Saturday morning, 35-year old Joshua Armstrong, of Creston, was arrested for Domestic Assault. He was later released on $300 bond.

Friday afternoon, 22-year old Nicholas Weckman, of Creston, was arrested at the Probation Office on a Union County warrant for Violation of Probation on an original charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. Weckman was being held in the Union County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

And, Friday morning, 75-year old Charles Blakeslee, of Afton, was arrested at the Union County Law Enforcement Center on a Union County warrant for Fraudulent Practice in the 1st Degree, and Tampering with Records. He was later released on a $10,000 bond.

Shelby County Fire Danger EXTREME this week – No outdoor burning allowed!

The Shelby County Local Fire Danger rating will be EXTREME this week, due to low humidity, strong winds and the availability of available fuels (dry grass/field stubble and brittle timber). Fires that begin in these conditions will spread rapidly and tend to resist firefighting efforts. NO OUTDOOR BURNING is allowed in Shelby County until further notice.

A wind advisory is in effect for the area until 2-p.m., followed by a RED FLAG WARNING for dangerous fire conditions until 8-p.m. today (Monday).

Reminder: Storm Spotter Training in Cass County March 8th

Cass County will host a National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Spotter Training Class to be held on Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 in the Courtroom of the Cass County Courthouse at 7:00 pm. Course Instructors are NWS Meteorologists who present information about identifying & reporting severe weather, spotter safety, severe weather climatology in Iowa, thunderstorm structure and threats, and more. Questions and comments directed toward these weather experts are encouraged and welcome.

This type of training has not occurred in Cass County for a couple of years. It’s FREE, requires NO REGISTRATION and is OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

MARGARET KASPERBAUER, 97, of Manning, died Sunday, March 5th, at Char-Mac Assisted Living of Manning. A Mass of Christian Burial for MARGARET KASPERBAUER will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, March 10th, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call after 4-p.m. Thursday (March 9th) at the funeral home, where a Rosary is at 4:30-p.m. and a Prayer service is at 6:30-p.m., Thursday; Visitation will resume 9:30-a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Church, in Manning (Prior to the Mass of Christian Burial).

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Manning.

MARGARET KASPERBAUER is survived by:

Her son – David (Deb) Kasperbauer, of Manning.

Her daughter – Mary (Dwight) Hazen, of Crescent.

Her brother – Louis Starman, of Carroll.

9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, her in-laws, other relatives & friends.
