CAM Cougars Dome Dreams fall short

Sports

November 2nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The CAM Cougars lost Thursday night to Bishop Garrigan 26-16 in Algona. In the first quarter the Golden Bears were first to strike with a 61 bomb from Tate Foertsch to Justin Bauer. The extra point would go low and right, but Bishop Garrigan had the lead. CAM’s response was a drive down to the 14 where Spieker connected with Jack Follman for a touchdown in the corner of the end zone. A two point conversion later and the Cougars had their first lead 8-6.

Going into the second both teams exchanged one more score. Foertsch would lead his team down the field again and pitched a shovel pass to Ethan Marsh inside the 10 yard line for another touchdown. The game was now 14-8. CAM would answer with a 36 yard spiral to Colin Bower as he walked into the endzone to give the lead back to CAM 16-14.

In the second half the script seemed to be flipped for CAM as their offense was shutdown by Bishop Garrigan. Both teams were held scoreless in the third, but the Golden Bears took advantage of the Cougar’s penalty troubles and turnovers in the 4th quarter to turn the tide. Tate Foertsch scrambled for two touchdowns in the 4th quarter and the Cougars could not find any traction.

The contest ended with Bishop Garrigan in the victory formation and CAM stunned from the outcome. It was a game that saw CAM quarterback Chase Spieker go 14-33, with 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Throughout the night Spieker looked to Collin Bower who had 5 grabs, with 1 score, and 74 yards.  However the 3 interceptions combined with the 50 penalty yards in the second half were too much for CAM to overcome.

Cougars Head Coach Barry Bower spoke plainly about the loss and the mistakes his team made.

Even with the mistakes and heartbreaking loss, Coach Bower was proud of this year’s Cougar squad.

Most Coaches would look for fault at coming so close to the UNI-Dome and falling short. But Coach Bower wanted to reiterate the pride he had in how his team continued to fight and the great season they achieved.

The 8-player playoff season continues for Winfield-Mt. Union, Bedford, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck as they all advance to the semifinals next week.

Freyler says the goal is to make Kansas throw the ball.

Freyler is looking forward to a night game in Jack Trice Stadium.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The reigning National Player of the Year, Caitlin Clark, was named to the Wade Trophy Preseason Watch List by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday. The Wade Trophy is given to the most outstanding women’s college basketball player in the country.

Clark won the Wade Trophy last season and was a finalist her sophomore year.

Clark was voted 2023-24 Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, while being a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. She was also named an AP Preseason All-American and to the Nancy Lieberman Watch List earlier last month.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 47th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I Player of the Year since 2001.

In exhibition play this season, Clark posted the first triple-double in Kinnick Stadium history against DePaul. She added 24 points, nine assists, and four rebounds in Iowa’s win over Clarke University in only 20 minutes of action.

The third ranked Hawkeyes are set to open the regular season against Fairleigh Dickinson inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Nov. 6. The game will air on B1G+ (subscription required) and on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Madrid looking forward to battle with ACGC

Sports

November 2nd, 2023 by admin

On Friday night a pair of 10-0 teams will battle it out in the Football Playoff quarterfinals with a berth in the semifinal at the UNI dome on the line. The Madrid Tigers and the ACGC Chargers both come into Friday night after both have dominant wins last week. The Madrid Tigers defeated Central Decatur by a score of 42-0 for the teams second shutout of the season. The Tigers came out and jumped to an early lead and never looked back. The Tigers rushing attack came in full force as they rushed for 362 yards as they were led by junior quarterback Preston Wicker who had 150 yards and three scores.

Madrid Head Coach Brock Hinkle said it has been a big key of emphasis for the Tigers to start quick and get a lead in these playoff games.

The Tigers has gotten better week in and week out. The Tigers stuffed Central Decatur to just over 200 total yards of offense and forced the team’s 14th interception on the season and coach Brock Hinkle was quick to give the praise to his defensive coaches for putting kids in the right spot with a great gameplan.

Now the Tigers move on to a tough opponent in the ACGC Chargers in the quarterfinals. Both the Tigers and Chargers have very similar game styles as both teams favor the run game. Over the last four games the Tigers have 10 pass attempts and the Chargers have just 4 attempts in that time frame. Coach Hinkle knows that the offense has to be clicking Friday night because possessions will be limited with the way these two teams use the clock.

The Chargers have three key rushers on the offensive side that all are near the 1000-yard mark on the season and Coach Hinkle knows it will be a big challenge for his Tigers defense.

The battle between these two unbeatens will kick off on Friday night at 7:00pm with the pregame show starting at 6:00pm right here on KJAN.

You can listen to the full interview with Coach Hinkle below.

Safety corridors across Iowa to put a focus on increasing safety in high-crash areas

News

November 2nd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa – Nov. 2, 2023 – People are dying on Iowa roads at alarming rates. Traffic fatalities in our state this year are more than 13 percent higher than the average number of fatalities over the last five years. One of the keys to reducing fatalities and major crashes is to bring awareness to the problem. The Iowa departments of transportation and public safety, along with support from local law enforcement partners, are teaming up to create safety corridors across the state.

Using 2016-2020 crash data, six sections of roadways have been identified for focus over the next year:

  • U.S. 20 from Lawton to Moville in Woodbury County
  • U.S. 6 from East of Council Bluffs to US 59 in Pottawattamie County
  • I-80 from County Road F-48 to Newton in Jasper County
  • Iowa 5 from Iowa 92 to the Monroe County line in Marion County
  • U.S. 218 from Mt. Pleasant to County Road J-20 (near Salem) in Henry County
  • Iowa 2 from Donnellson to U.S. 61 in Lee County

These areas ranked in the top one percent statewide for all crashes and severe crashes. They also had a higher number of single-vehicle, run-off-the-road crashes and rear-end crashes at intersections with speeding and distraction as major causes.

Safety cooridor sign

Iowans may notice the safety corridor marked with signs. Pavement markings in those areas have been widened to help drivers more easily see them in low-light and inclement weather. In addition, the Iowa State Patrol and local law enforcement will have an increased focus on enforcing the area. Education and communication efforts throughout the year will help remind drivers that practicing good driving behaviors can make the area safer.

“We have seen speeds and distraction behind the wheel rise and only 40 percent of those who die on Iowa’s roads are wearing a seatbelt. Unfortunately, our state’s climbing fatality rates are showing the consequences of our individual decisions behind the wheel. We all have someone who is expecting us to return from each trip safely. Creating safety corridors is just another way the DOT can help remind drivers of the role they play in making sure everyone returns home safely,” explained Scott Marler, Iowa Department of Transportation director.

“The Iowa State Patrol is committed to reducing traffic collisions, injuries, and preventable deaths on Iowa roadways. We are confident that we can accomplish these goals with collaboration, strong partnerships, and a concerted effort on traffic safety.  By working together, we can collectively and proactively address safety concerns across the state of Iowa,” remarked Colonel Nathan Fulk, Iowa State Patrol.
