A few IOWA Cubs to get World Series rings tonight

April 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A “ring” ceremony will be staged on the field before the Iowa Cubs game this (Friday) evening in Des Moines. The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians last fall to win the World Series, but team members didn’t get their commemorative rings until earlier this month. A few of the IOWA Cubs who spent time up on Chicago’s roster last season will get 2016 World Series Championship Rings tonight (Friday).

Iowa Cubs owner Michael Gartner and Sam Bernabe, the long-time president and general manager of the I-Cubs, are getting rings, too. The triple-A franchise in Des Moines has been associated with the big league Cubs since 1981.

The Chicago Cubs’ World Series rings have the iconic “C” logo made out of rubies and sapphires. There are also 108 diamonds — signifying the 108 years between World Series titles for the club.

Chiefs move up to take QB Mahomes 10th overall in draft

Sports

April 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs boldly moved up in the NFL draft on Thursday night to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, giving them an heir apparent to veteran Alex Smith.

Kansas City sent its first-round picks this year and next year and one of two third-round picks in this year’s draft to Buffalo, climbing from the No. 27 pick to take the second QB off the board. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky went to the Chicago Bears second overall, while Heisman Trophy winner Deshaun Watson of Clemson went to the Houston Texas at No. 12.

It’s the third time in the common draft era that Kansas City has taken a quarterback in the first round, and the first since Todd Blackledge in 1983. Mahomes is also the second QB to be taken in the first round by a Reid-coach team following Donovan McNabb with Philadelphia in 1999.

The Chiefs were in the market for a quarterback with Smith nearing the end of his career. The former No. 1 overall pick of the 49ers, Smith arrived in Kansas City with Reid and general manager John Dorsey four years ago. And he’s played well enough to lead the Chiefs to three playoff appearances, an AFC West title this past season and earn a $68 million, four-year contract extension that could keep him with the Chiefs through the 2018 season.

That timetable is important: It gives Mahomes at least one season and possibly two to learn Reid’s offense from a trusted veteran. And if Mahomes proves to be a quick study, Smith can be released after next season with a relatively minimal impact on the salary cap. Mahomes posted up eye-popping numbers in a pass-heavy offense geared to putting up points. He started 29 games over three seasons and became only the third player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with multiple seasons of 5,000 yards total offense.

He threw for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state judge has ruled that the Iowa Department of Transportation has the authority to order cities to remove automated traffic-enforcement cameras from highways and interstates. The cities made the request after the DOT ordered some speed cameras turned off because they did not make interstate highways safer.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Legislature approved an expanded medical marijuana oil program in the final hours of its session, but advocates remain skeptical that it will have enough impact. The Republican-controlled chambers approved a bill to allow the oil to treat nine conditions, including cancer and multiple sclerosis. Critics say a cap on the strength of the oil that can be used limits the medical benefit.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state of Iowa has spent $55,000 so far defending itself against a lawsuit challenging a new collective bargaining law. An invoice reviewed this week by a state council shows the Belin McCormick law firm in Des Moines charged the amount on behalf of four lawyers and a paralegal. They worked more than 175 hours between Feb. 20 and March 30 on a lawsuit filed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Iowa Council 61.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City man found guilty last month of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of another man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison. Sioux City television station KTIV reports that 48-year-old Elias Wanatee was sentenced Thursday in Pottawattamie County for the February 2016 death of 50-year-old Vernon Mace, his girlfriend’s uncle. Judge: Iowa DOT can order removal of highway speed cameras

News

April 27th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state judge has ruled that the Iowa Department of Transportation has the authority to order cities to remove automated traffic-enforcement cameras from highways and interstates.

The Des Moines Register reports the ruling Thursday is in response to a request for judicial review filed by Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Muscatine in 2015. The cities made the request after the DOT ordered some speed cameras turned off because they did not make interstate highways safer.

The three cities had argued that the DOT was infringing on cities’ ability to self-govern. But Judge Scott Rosenberg wrote that the DOT has the power to apply safety regulations on primary highways, and that the right doesn’t interfere with cities’ ability to enforce speed regulations.

A Des Moines official says the city will appeal.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie it and Matt Carpenter delivered a grand slam in the 11th, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals over the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4 Thursday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Carpenter finished with two hits and five RBIs. Grichuk had two hits and drove in three runs. Toronto is the only team in the major leagues that hasn’t won a series this season. The Blue Jays also are the lone club that has yet to win two straight games.

Kolten Wong opened the Cardinals 11th with a triple off Ryan Tepera (1-1). The Blue Jays intentionally walked the next two batters before getting a flyout. Toronto called on left-hander J.P. Howell to face the lefty-hitting Carpenter. With the count full, Carpenter sent a drive into the right field stands for his first career grand slam.

Matt Bowman (1-0) earned the win.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day sites

News

April 27th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Saturday, April 29th, is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a chance for you to get rid of unused, expired or unused prescription medications, no questions asked. Drop off your pills or patches between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, but take note: Needles, sharps and liquids will not be accepted.

In the KJAN listening area, here are some of the drop-off sites:

Atlantic – the Atlantic Police Department at 23 E. 4th Street (inside drop box)

Council Bluffs – Walgreens (535 E. Broadway St.)

Lenox – Nucara #30 Pharmacy (107 N. Main)

Shenandoah – Shenandoah Police Dept. (400 W. Sheridan Ave.)

Carter Lake – Carter Lake City Hall (950 Locust St.)

Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office (1400 Big Lake Road)

Glenwood – Glenwood Police Dept. (3 N. Vine St.)

Adel – Sumpter Pharmacy (628 Nike Kinnick Dr.)

Mt. Ayr – Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office (801 W. South St.)

(additional sites can be found at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html )

Last fall, more than 730,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in at about 5,200 Take Back Day sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 state and local law enforcement partners. The DEA says in the 12 previous Take Back events, more than 7.1 million pounds of pills were turned in.

Proper disposal of unwanted medicines is important. Most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. They can lead to overdoses and accidental poisonings. Authorities say once-common methods of disposal, such as flushing medicines down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose potential safety and health hazards, so take this opportunity to get rid of those old prescription meds the safe way, by dropping them off at a site near you.
