ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez had two hits and an RBI, Tommy Pham kept up his strong start to the season and St. Louis beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Saturday. In a rematch of the season opener, Martinez (3-3) again topped Jon Lester (1-2). Martinez allowed three runs, five hits and four walks over 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven.

Top Cubs prospect Ian Happ homered off Martinez in the seventh for his first hit in his major league debut. Martinez scored Pham on a squeeze bunt in the third inning. Lester tried to field the ball and flip it home, but the attempt came up short while Martinez took second with nobody covering.

Pham had two hits, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. The outfielder is batting .387 with seven extra-base hits in eight games since being recalled from Triple-A this month. Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth, giving up a two-out single before picking up his 10th save in 11 opportunities.

Grain truck driver who caused Iowa bridge collapse cited

Ag/Outdoor, News

May 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

CRESCO, Iowa (AP) — A man accused of driving a 30-ton (30.48-metric ton) grain truck over a small county bridge with a 3-ton weight limit, leading to its collapse, has been cited. Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports that the truck’s driver was cited for violating a weight embargo.

The collapse happened early the morning of May 5 on Cattle Creek Road over the Upper Iowa River east of Cresco. Officials say the bridge was designed to hold no more than the weight of an average pickup truck, and a sign warning of the span’s limit was clearly posted. Officials say the loaded grain truck caused it to buckle and collapse. No one was injured.

Officials say the river is back open to canoers, kayakers and other rafters.

Vintage truck show slated this month at Iowa fairgrounds

News

May 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – What’s being billed as the world’s largest vintage truck show will be held on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines later this month. American Truck Historical Society director Jim Poage says more than 1,000 vintage trucks will be on display and will include “some of the first trucks ever produced in the world.” The trucks will range from early 1900’s high wheelers to large, vintage 18-wheeler-type trucks. The show will run from May 25 through May 27.

The show, along with the national convention of the society, is an annual event that moves to different locations each year. In addition to the trucks, there will be almost 100 different craft and food vendors, a swap meet, and a competition truck pull.
