Operation Dry Water campaign in Iowa included six BWI arrests

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reporting six people were arrested for boating while intoxicated in the state between June 30th and July 2nd. The DNR took part in a national campaign called Operation Dry Water. Susan Stocker, the DNR’s boating law administrator and education coordinator, says the six drunk boating arrests is down slightly from last year. “During the 2016 campaign, we had 10 boating while intoxicated arrests,” Stocker said.

Law officers stepped-up enforcement efforts over the recent holiday weekend at Okoboji, Clear Lake, Saylorville, Coralville Reservoir/Lake MacBride, Lake Delhi, and both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. During the three-day enforcement operation, 153 officers participated, spending more than 1,800 hours making contact with 1,463 vessels.

In addition to the six boating while intoxicated arrests, the DNR reports officers issued 478 various citations or warnings. Six people were killed in Iowa in boat crashes last year. Two of those crashes involved alcohol.

Helping Iowa cattle handle the heat

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A blistering heat wave has washed over Iowa this week and as temperatures rise, so does the level of concern among livestock producers. Iowa State University Beef Center Veterinarian Grant Dewell says the biggest keys to keeping cattle comfortable is plenty of shade and large amounts of drinking water.

“Their water intake will increase by two to three times during these hot days,” Dewell said. “So, we always want to make sure people’s water tanks are in good shape, the valves are running freely, and they don’t have something stuck or some hard water deposits on there that limit the ability for those tanks to refill.”

Farmers are also advised to use fans and sprinkle cattle with water if the animals are showing signs of heat stress. According to Dewell, cattle in Iowa fair pretty well when temperatures are below 90-degrees. Actual temperatures this week have reached the mid-to-upper 90s in parts of the state.

“If you think about it, most of our cattle we deal with (in Iowa) — Angus, Hereford, Simmentals — are cattle from the north; northern England, Germany, and those types of places where they don’t get this amount of heat,” Dewell said. “They’re really developed for cold weather environments and an Iowa summer is a little bit warm for them.”

There have been no reports of cattle deaths in Iowa due to heat in many years. In the summer of 2011, beef producers in five states reported nearly 20,000 cattle deaths due to an extended period of extreme heat and humidity. According to the Iowa Beef Industry Council, there are more than 3.8 million cows on farms across the state. Iowa is ranked 9th in the country in terms of beef cow production and 12th in dairy cows.

(Updated 7:22-a.m.) CONROY, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a tornado has damaged farmsteads and crop fields and high winds from other storms have torn at homes and knocked out power in eastern Iowa.

Iowa County authorities say the tornado touched down about a mile north of Williamsburg a little before 6 p.m. Tuesday and churned northeast, skirting Conroy before lifting. No injuries have been reported at the three damaged farmsteads. Thunderstorms packing winds up to 75 mph downed trees and power lines in Dubuque County overnight, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

More than 9 inches of rain has been reported in southern Clayton County, where authorities evacuated up to 20 homes because of flooding. Quarter-size hail was reported in the Holy Cross area.

Cano’s blast lifts AL in extra innings

MIAMI (AP) — Robinson Cano was a late addition to the American League All-Star team, and he made a late contribution to a 2-1 win over the National League in Miami on Tuesday.

Cano led off the 10th inning with a homer off Wade Davis to break a 1-1 deadlock and earn MVP honors. The Mariners second baseman landed on his eighth All-Star team only as an injury replacement for Starlin Castro of the Yankees.

It was the first extra-inning home run in an All-Star Game since Reds slugger Tony Perez hit one exactly 50 years ago. Perez threw out one of the ceremonial first pitches before the game.

The American League jumped out on top in the fifth inning against Dodgers left Alex Wood as Boston outfielder Mookie Betts hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Twins infielder Miguel Sano to break the ice. The National League tied it on Yadier Molina’s solo homer off Ervin Santana in the bottom of the sixth, a half-inning after the Cardinals catcher was inserted into the game.

Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel received the victory after stranding the potential winning run on third base in the ninth. Cleveland’s Andrew Miller got the save, striking out Cody Bellinger to end it.

It’s the fifth straight victory for the American League, and the 17th in the last 20 contests that didn’t end in a tie. The outcome means the all-time series is tied for the first time since the NL beat the AL in 1964. Each league has won 43 times, with two ties.

The outcome no longer determines home-field advantage for the World Series, as it had since 2003. Instead, the American League winners get $20,000 apiece, while the losers get nothing.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Ending a case that’s been called a remarkable injustice, prison officials have dropped all sanctions imposed on an Iowa inmate for his role in an alleged 2009 gang rape that he says never happened. The decision by the Iowa Department of Corrections is a victory for Joe Byrd, who had denied involvement in the alleged attack through 7 ½ years of hearings and appeals. Department officials will expunge the discipline from Byrd’s record as if the case never happened, shaving time off his sentence.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former Iowa Senate Republican Caucus aide has testified in her sexual harassment lawsuit that sex, race and sexual orientation were regular topics of conversations and jokes in the office. The Des Moines Register reports that 39-year-old Kirsten Anderson testified in her lawsuit Tuesday. Much of her testimony focused on the behavior of a male senior analyst whom she said in 2010 seemed angry and daily referred to women using an obscenity.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Officials have identified a woman whose body was pulled from the Wapsipinicon River last month. The Courier reports that the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the body found June 15 is that of 47-year-old Rhonda Apfel, of Waterloo. Dr. Jonathan Thompson with the state examiner’s office says the cause of death hasn’t been determined and is pending further tests.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Another man has been sentenced to prison in connection to a Burlington shooting that police suspect was prompted by a still-unsolved homicide. The Hawk Eye reports that Holland Ewing Jr., of Chicago, was sentenced Monday to 10 years. Police say the three conspired to shoot into a house where they thought the killer of their friend, Breon Combs, was. Combs also lived in Chicago.
