No winner in Saturday’s Powerball drawing: Jackpot climbs to $430 million

The Powerball jackpot climbs to an estimated $430 million for Wednesday’s drawing, after no one won the drawing Saturday night. Five tickets matching all five numbers but not the Powerball, sold in California, Illinios, Nevada and Texas won $1-million each. The numbers drawn were 20-24-26-35-49 and the Powerball was 19. The Power Play number was 2.

If there’s a winner Wednesday night, August 16th, the person or persons who claim the winning ticket have the option of having the prize paid out in 30 annual payments (an annuity), or a one-time cash payout of $273.4 million.

The Powerball prize pool has been building since June 10th. The odds of winning are one in 292 million.

EUNICE JOSEPHINE GOETZINGER, 86, of Nevada (& formerly of Defiance), died Saturday, Aug. 12th, at Story County Senior Care. A Mass of Christian Burial for EUNICE GOETZINGER will be held 11-a.m. Wed., Aug. 16th, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tue., Aug. 15th, from 6-until 8-p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30-p.m.

Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery at Defiance.

Her daughter – Julie Tigges, of Nevada, IA.

Her sisters – Audrey Miller, of Omaha; Yvonne Heithoff, of Neligh, NE., & Lorene Steuhr, of Elgin, NE.

LYDIA METZLER, 89, of Des Moines (& formerly of Audubon), died Aug. 10th, at the Calvin Community Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for LYDIA METZLER will be held 1-p.m. Monday, Aug. 14th, at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

LYDIA METZLER is survived by:

Her son – Norbert (Karen) Metzler, of Johnston.

Her daughter – Jane (Rick) Lotz, of Viroqua, WI.

Her sister – Margarethe Radtke, of Germany.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A housing shortage for those living below the poverty line in Des Moines is being exacerbated by soaring rent costs, a local organization has found. The Des Moines Register reports that rents in the city have increased by more than 15 percent in past five years. The Polk County Housing Trust Fund also says that Polk and eastern Dallas counties are almost 8,000 units shy of meeting demand for single people making less than $15,000 annually.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman accused of trying to flush her newborn down a toilet and leaving the baby for dead in a trash can has pleaded guilty to reduced charges in the case. The Press-Citizen reports that 24-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader pleaded guilty Friday in Johnson County District Court to child endangerment and to neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. In exchange, prosecutors dropped an attempted murder charge.

DECATUR, Neb. (AP) — A bridge spanning the Missouri River that connects Decatur, Nebraska, to western Iowa is set to close for repairs. The Sioux City Journal reports that the Decatur bridge will close Monday. Workers will make structural repairs to abutments on each end of the bridge. The pavement leading up to the bridge on each side also will be replaced. Bridge traffic had been reduced to one lane since March 27 because of sandblasting and repainting.

HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) — A 42-year-old Meservey man convicted of kidnapping and torturing a woman has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Charles Albright was sentenced Friday. Prosecutors say Albright held a 36-year-old woman captive for 12 to 14 hours on Oct. 7 in Meservey, where she was punched, slammed against a floor, shocked with a stun gun and repeatedly bitten by a dog. Albright then took her to Sheffield, where he continued beating her.

SEATTLE (AP) — Clint Dempsey scored on a header in the 36th minute, and the Seattle Sounders stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-0 victory against Sporting Kansas City Saturday. The win lifted Seattle into a tie with Kansas City atop the Western Conference.

CHICAGO (AP) — Melky Cabrera hit a go-ahead, two-run homer against his former team in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Saturday night to stop a five-game losing streak. Cabrera, acquired from Kansas City on July 30th, homered with one out off Aaron Bummer and drove in Lorenzo Cain.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuk and Paul DeJong homered and the St. Louis Cardinals stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves Saturday night. The eight-game run is the longest for St. Louis since the Cardinals won eight in a row April 28th through May 5th, 2015.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — This didn’t take long: The St. Louis Cardinals announced a Rally Cat Night promotion for their September 10th game against Pittsburgh. A cat trotted on the field Wednesday with the Cardinals trailing Kansas City 5-4. After a short delay, Yadier Molina hit a grand slam on the next pitch, and St. Louis went on to an 8-5 win. The cat was placed outside the ballpark near the end of the game and was picked up by a fan, who intended to take it home. But the feline jumped from her grasp and ran off into a grassy area blocks from the stadium. After a lengthy search, the cat was discovered in downtown St. Louis on Friday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The competition for Iowa’s vacant quarterback job will extend into at least next week. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Saturday following a public workout at Kinnick Stadium that junior Tyler Wiegers and sophomore Nathan Stanley will continue to split repetitions with the first team as the coaching staff tries to find a replacement for two-year starter C.J. Beathard.

Atlantic’s Olsen shoots 65 to take the lead at Tournament of Champions

Recent Atlantic graduate and future Northwestern College golfer Jake Olsen shot a (-4) 65 on Saturday at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club to take the lead at the 2017 Tournament of Champions. Jake started his brilliant round with an Eagle on the first hole and ended with a Birdie on the 18th. He now sits at -3 for the Tournament and leads a group of six golfers tied for 2nd at +2.

That group at +2 includes: Andrew Martin (Nishna Hills), Ross Martens (Shelby Co GC), Zach Christianson (Atlantic G & CC), Ron Peterson (Past Champion), Evan Schuler (Past Champion), Steve Davie (Majestic Hills GC).

Rick Thompson (Past Champion) leads the Senior division by a shot after a 73 Saturday. He’s at +6 for the tourney with Bobby Rist (Lake City CC) and Darron Baker (Past Champion) right behind him at +7. Last year’s senior champ Del Miller is at +9 along with Jim Wood (Red Oak CC).

Jim Redemske (Clarmond CC) shot a 70 on day two to lead the Super Senior Division at +9. Last year’s Super Senior champ Arnie Leistad is second at +13.

DALE E. SLAYTON, 94, of Guthrie Center (& formerly of Casey), died Friday, Aug. 11th, at the New Homestead, in Guthrie Center. Memorial services for DALE SLAYTON will be held 10:30-a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16th, at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart.

Northern Iowa man sentenced to life in kidnapping case

HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) — A 42-year-old Meservey man convicted of kidnapping and torturing a woman has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Charles Albright was sentenced Friday in Franklin County District Court. He was convicted in July of first-degree kidnapping and willful injury.

Prosecutors said Albright held a 36-year-old woman captive for 12 to 14 hours on Oct. 7 in Meservey, where she was punched, slammed against a floor, shocked with a stun gun and repeatedly bitten by a dog. She was then taken to Sheffield, where Albright continued beating her.

Her injuries included burns and broken bones in her face. Albright also faces trial Sept. 26 on a felony explosives count, accused of having a bomb or bomb parts.
