The Atlantic boys basketball team hopes they can carry some momentum from their state tournament appearance last season into the 2017-18 campaign. The Trojans went 19-6 last season and lost in the first round of the state tournament to Waverly-Shell Rock. Atlantic will have to overcome the loss of an impact player and leader in Garrett Franken, but a strong group of experienced players do return. Austin Alexander, Chase Mullenix, Scott Leonard, Grant Podhajsky, Tyler Moen, and Jaxson Eden are all back and played significant minutes last season. Head Coach Alan Jenkins talked about the experience the team has.

The Trojans allowed an average of 55.8 points per game to opponents last season and Coach Jenkins expects this year’s team to be even better defensively.

Scott Leonard is the top returning scorer after averaging 14.7 points per game last year and Coach Jenkins expects him to have a huge impact down low again this season, and should be one of the premiere big men in the conference and class. Austin Alexander returns at the point after averaging 11.0 points per game last year and leading the team with 100 assists. Austin will be another player the Trojans lean on offensively and Coach Jenkins said he expects him to have a breakout year in that regard. Atlantic will have to replace the 23.8 points per game that Garrett Franken contributed last year. Franken is now a freshman at The University of North Dakota. Coach Jenkins talked about replacing those points as a team.

The Trojans open up the season on Tuesday night at home against the Winterset Huskies. We will have video coverage of that game for you on KJANTV. Tip time is set for 7:30pm at the Atlantic High School.

Lawyer says ‘Bachelor’ didn’t break Iowa’s hit-and-run law

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — Lawyers for former “Bachelor” star Chris Soules’ have asked a judge to dismiss the charge against him stemming from his rear-end crash that killed a farmer driving a tractor. Defense attorney Robert Montgomery argued Monday that the charge of failing to remain at the scene of a fatal collision should be dismissed because he says Soules complied with Iowa law. He says Soules reported the April crash, identified himself to a 911 dispatcher, provided aid to the 66-year-old farmer, Kenneth Mosher, and waited until emergency responders arrived. He says the law didn’t require Soules to stay longer.

Prosecutor Scott Brown says the law implies that drivers responsible for fatal crashes must remain until an officer can speak with them. He says witnesses stayed longer than Soules, who fled in a truck down a gravel road about 14 minutes after rear-ending Mosher’s tractor. Judge Andrea Dryer says she’ll rule later on Soules’ motion to dismiss the case. The trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 18.

YORK, Neb. (AP) — The sister of a man facing the death penalty for four Omaha killings has been transferred to an Iowa prison to serve her life sentence. A Nebraska Correctional Services Department spokeswoman confirmed Monday that 27-year-old Erica Jenkins had left the Nebraska women’s prison in York and been moved to the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women, in Mitchellville. Spokeswoman Dawn-Renee Smith said Monday the move was made at Jenkins’ request. Smith says the two states have an agreement that the receiving state bears the cost of such transfer prisoners.

Erica Jenkins was convicted of murder in January 2015, accused by authorities of helping her brother, Nikko Jenkins, kill Curtis Bradford in Omaha in 2013. Nikko Jenkins pleaded no contest to murder charges in the Bradford case and three others.

Lawsuit: Iowa school for juvenile offenders misusing drugs

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Advocacy groups have filed a federal lawsuit alleging officials representing an Iowa school for juvenile offenders are failing to provide adequate mental health care. The lawsuit was filed Monday in Des Moines by Disability Rights Iowa and the national watchdog organization Children’s Rights. The groups allege the Boys State Training School administers “dangerous” psychotropic medications without adequate oversight and consent.

The lawsuit says school officials are unlawfully using seclusion rooms and full-body restraints, and don’t have enough mental health professionals at the Eldora facility, which is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) north of Des Moines. The Iowa Department of Human Services runs the school. Three department officials are named as defendants.

The agency says it doesn’t comment on pending litigation. But it defended the school when Disability Rights Iowa released a report raising concerns earlier this year.
