IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A trial will be moved to Des Moines for a parolee accused of killing a bail bondsman in Iowa City. Court records say a judge ordered the change of venue Friday at the request of lawyers for 41-year-old Curtis Jones. He’s accused of shooting 34-year-old Jonathan Wieseler in the head while committing a robbery on April 22. Police say Jones was seen on security video near the crime scene and that Wieseler’s DNA was found in Jones’ vehicle. The trial is set to begin July 16.

Jones is also charged with the June murder of Iowa City cab driver Ricky Lillie. He has pleaded not guilty in that case. The Iowa Board of Parole released Jones from prison years early in November 2016 in an armed robbery case.

January 23rd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A May trial has been scheduled for a man accused of killing a hunter in south-central Iowa. Court records say 27-year-old Ethan Davis entered a written plea of not guilty Monday to a charge of first-degree murder. His trial is set to begin May 1. Davis is charged with killing 31-year-old Curtis Ross, of Cedar Falls, whose body was found Dec. 2 in a remote area of Appanoose County. An autopsy report says Ross suffered several stabbing and gunshot wounds.

Officials say fingerprints on bullet casings discovered near Ross’ body led investigators to Davis. Investigators also say Davis’ fingerprints were found on a rifle that was hidden under farm equipment at Davis’ property about 3½ miles (6 kilometers) northeast of Promise City.

Bamba’s 24 points lead Texas over Iowa State 73-57

Sports

January 23rd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Freshman Mo Bamba scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Texas over Iowa State 73-57 Monday night.

The Longhorns led the entire way in a game they needed after a 35-point blowout loss over the weekend at West Virginia, the worst loss in coach Shaka Smart’s career. The win also kept the Longhorns (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) off the bottom of the Big 12 standings nearing the halfway point of the conference season. Texas finished last in the Big 12 last season.

Cameron Lard had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Iowa State (11-8, 2-6). The Cyclones’ growing pains continue. After knocking off then-No. 8 Texas Tech at home in their biggest win of the season, any confidence left from that win disappeared quickly under Roach’s early long-range shooting and the dominant presence of Bamba underneath.

Iowa State hosts Tennessee on Saturday.
