CHICAGO – Iowa State (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) was clicking on all cylinders offensively Friday night, as it defeated DePaul (1-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) 99-80 behind a Tamin Lipsey triple-double – the seventh in Iowa State history – as part of the BIG EAST/Big 12 Battle.

After DePaul hung around in the first half, at one point using a 13-0 run to take a 10-point, first-half lead, Iowa State battled back to wrestle away control at the midway point of the first stanza and eventually distanced itself in the second half. The Cyclones had their highest scoring half of the season in the second stanza, pouring 58 points against the Blue Demons.

ISU finished the game with 29 assists, its most since recording 32 back in 2019. As part of the 29 assists, three Cyclones had 6+ dimes. That’s the first time that’s been done since 2014 when DeAndre Kane, Georges Niang and Monté did so against TCU.

The Cyclones remain undefeated in the BIG EAST/Big 12 Battle, moving to 4-0 across the challenge’s five-year existence. The Cyclones notched the Big 12’s second win, as Houston downed Xavier earlier in the day. The challenge is tied at three apiece with four games left to be played as Kansas topped UConn in a top-five tilt to cap Friday night.

Outside of Lipsey’s historic night, Iowa State had a balanced offensive attack as five other Cyclones scored in double figures. Tre King had his best offensive output in a Cyclone uniform, recording 24 points and going 10-15 from the floor. Lipsey’s final line read: 15 points, 10 boards and 10 dimes. Keshon Gilbert (21), Robert Jones (12), Jackson Paveletzke (11) and Milan Momcilovic (10) rounded out the double-digit performers for Iowa State. Paveletzke turned in his best game as a Cyclone, providing a real spark off the bench and helped fuel the dynamic second half performance.

Lipsey is the first Cyclone since Tyrese Haliburton in 2020 to record a triple-double, and he joins the likes of Monté Morris, Royce White, Jamaal Tinsley, Curtis Stinson and Marc Urquhart as members of the illustrious club.

DePaul was over 55% from deep for the majority of the game, dropping slightly as it began to force more shots. Jeremiah Oden had a career day for the Blue Demons, turning in 25 points and going 6-7 from deep to power DePaul. Chico Carter chipped in 14 points and a team-high eight assists. DePaul was done in by its 17 turnovers and was crushed on the glass, getting outrebounded by 28.

How It Happened

The Cyclones got off to a quick start, taking a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of action. The Blue Demons responded with an 18-2 run to take a 10-point lead and regain momentum. ISU’s bench sparked the comeback run as Curtis Jones canned a three and a pair of Paveletzke baskets, along with some Lipsey and Gilbert scores, helped the Cyclones retake the lead at the 8:55 mark.

It marked the second time this season that Iowa State had overcome a 10-point first-half deficit, having also done so against VCU at the ESPN Events Invitational.

The Cyclones were unable to stay comfortable though, as DePaul kept things close throughout the half thanks to Oden’s hot shooting. Iowa State was never able to push its lead past six, and after trading end-of-half baskets, went into the locker room up four – 41-37.

Iowa State came out of the break and used an 8-0 run to earn a 12-point lead, its largest of the game at the time, by the 17:12 mark. The opening run for the Cyclones really set the tone for the second half, as ISU threatened to run away with it a couple of times but DePaul’s shooting kept things respectable.

Nine of the Blue Demons’ turnovers came in the second half, as play got a bit sloppy with DePaul turning the ball over in transition multiple times, allowing for Paveletzke, Lipsey and Gilbert to feast in the open court.

ISU opened up its largest lead of the night – 23 points – at the 14:43 mark and would keep the Blue Demons at arm’s length from there, holding on to win by 19 and earn its sixth win of the season and first on the road.

The Atlantic Trojans boys’ basketball team took a hard-fought loss on the road at Glenwood 67-56. The Rams got off to a fast start with a full court press and forcing seven first quarter Trojan turnovers had a 16-4 lead before Gavin McLaren hit a three to make the score 16-7. Trojans head coach Dalton Franken talked about the first couple minutes of the game being the deciding factor on the night.

The Trojans would battle all night long but just could never get over the hump. The Trojans offense rode the hot hand of senior leader Colton Rasmussen who posted a game high 31 points and at times willed the Trojans to cut the lead as low as five after an incredible four-point play by Rasmussen, but the Rams would always respond with an immediate run of their own to push the lead back to double figures. Head Coach Dalton Franken is very happy with his team’s resiliency to keep fighting until the very end, but his message is to start the game with the same energy and enthusiasm as they ended the game.

With the 11-point loss the Trojans fall to 0-2 on the young season and 0-1 in the Hawken Ten Conference. The Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday night when they will host Clarinda for a 7:30pm tipoff in Atlantic.

In the girls game it had a very similar start to the boy’s game and a similar ending with Atlantic losing 56-42. Atlantic scored the first four points of the game after a Makenna Schroeder and Katrina Williams layups. But the lady Rams quickly turned that around as they turned up the pressure to a full court press where they would benefit with forcing the Lady Trojans to seven first quarter turnovers. But the second quarter would be even worse for the Trojans as they had nine turnovers for 16 total first half turnovers and the Rams led 29-12. Head Coach of the Trojans Dan Vargason talked about the teams turnover problem early in the season as they averaged 34 a game through the first three full games.

The Lady Trojans would play an unbelievable fourth quarter where they outscored the Lady Rams 18-8 and shot 8-13 from the floor in the period. The Lady Trojans are still a very young team that plays several sophomores and freshman, so they are still learning how to play with each other and build chemistry on the floor and know their roles better as players. Coach Vargason said he thinks that is part of the reason for the slow starts, but the fourth quarter was very positive to see.

The Lady Trojans fall to 1-3 on the season and will be back in action to play on Tuesday night to take on Clarinda for a 6:00pm tipoff.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa swimming and diving concluded day two of the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday. Through fourteen events, the Hawkeyes lead team scoring with 517 points.

Nebraska sits in second with 510 points, followed by Iowa State (352), Colorado State (345), Rutgers (242), and New Mexico State (240).

“It’s great to have a race like this for the team score so that we can continue to understand how valuable each individual and each performance throughout the course of a longer meet,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “You have to be gritty, especially when it comes to day three. You really have to understand what you have to do to perform on the last day.”

Iowa posted four more marks that rank on Iowa’s top 10 all-time lists. The Hawkeyes kicked off the night with fifth year Kennedy Gilbertson, freshman Olivia Swalley, sophomore Scarlet Martin, and freshman Jenna Kerr combining for the fifth all-time 200 Medley Relay with a time of 7:21.21.

Swalley followed up the relay with two more top-10 performances at Iowa. She swam the third fastest 400 IM in the preliminaries and ran it back in the finals, shaving off two seconds and ranking second all-time with a time of 4:14.72. The freshman then swam the 100 breaststroke, jumping to sixth (1:01.76) in the record books.

Kerr raced in the 200 free ranking eighth overall posting a time of 1:48.86.

Iowa divers had an outstanding final performance with both three-meter divers advancing to the “A” finals. Senior Sarah Ballard posted a career best 319.55 — good for second place. Freshman Simone Beinlich also finished strong, ranking fourth with a season best of 291.80.

“Olivia (Swalley), for a midseason meet, had some really excellent performances. She had a full day with the 400 IM and 100 breast and learned how to get better throughout the day and which is exactly what you want them to experience here at this kind of meet. It took a lot of grit. It’s great to have those strong performances throughout the day and even though they’re tired, you want them to experience this so that they can be prepared for the second half of the season.”

The Hawkeyes return to action on Saturday, Dec. 2 for the final day of the Hawkeye Invitational with preliminaries at 10 a.m. (CT) and finals at 5 p.m. (CT). The meet will be live streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).

PHILADELPHIA – The fourth-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team defeated the University of Pennsylvania, 22-13, on Friday night at the Palestra.

The Hawkeyes won six matches by decision and one by major decision.

“We are tight, and every point we score is hard,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We gotta figure out a way to make it a little easier. Like a hot knife through butter.”

Drake Ayala got the night started with a decision over Max Gallagher winning, 8-7. Ayala fended off a late push from Gallagher for his third ranked win of the season. Penn evened things up with a win at 133 pounds with Michael Colaiocco defeating Jace Rhodes via decision, 5-0.

The Hawkeyes then won the next three matches to head into intermission with a 12-3 lead. Real Woods defeated CJ Composto, 5-0, before Victor Voinovich III won against Andy Troczynski, 1-0. After a scoreless first two periods Voinovich chose down and earned the escape point to secure the victory.

Jared Franek notched a decision against Penn’s Jude Swisher at 157 pounds to send the Hawkeyes to the break leading 12-3.

The Quakers won the next two matches with Nick Incontera defeating Patrick Kennedy by major decision and Maximus Hale pinning Aiden Riggins in 1:55.

The Hawkeyes won the final two bouts of the night to close out the dual. Zach Glazier extended his unbeaten streak to eight with a decision over Martin Cosgrove. Bradley Hill finished things off with a decision over Cole Urbas winning, 8-3.

The CAM Cougars basketball team will start their season off with a 56-48 loss at home against Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Cougars started the game off with a 6-0 run and had the fans cheering. But watched a 6-0 lead dwindle and a duel begin. Both teams exchanged shots inside the paint for CAM to have a 13-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. The playing tempo did not change much in the second quarter where both teams pressed their fast breaks and looked to the three-point line for baskets. The score at half was 25-21 with CAM leading.

In the second half CAM’s offense went dry Cal Heydon got hot from across the floor with 24 points on the night. He helped the Crusaders scoop out a comeback victory with a final score of 56-48. Cougars Head basketball coach Ian Hunt liked the hustle from his team throughout the game.

Chase Jahde finished with 17 points while Colin Bower had 10. The athletic play from Jahde in the second half impressed coach Hunt.

The Cougars slip to 0-1 with the loss and next have an important road game at Woodbine on Tuesday night.

Coon Rapids-Bayard was helped by Caden Oswald with 9 points and Cade Behrens with 11 points. The Crusaders stay undefeated with the win and now stand at 3-0. They will travel to West Harrison on Tuesday.

The CAM Cougars girls opened up conference with a home loss against the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders on Friday night 43-22. The Crusaders used a 10-0 run to start the first quarter followed immediately by an 11-4 run early in the second quarter to blow the game open and have the Cougars down 21-4 at the half. The third quarter saw the Cougars score 13 points to make it 33-17, but offensive woes in the 4th had CAM only score five to make it a 43-22 Crusaders victory.

The shooting struggles for CAM was something that Head Coach Joe Wollum took responsibility for.

The Class 1A #13 Crusaders were led by Anna Hart with 15 points and 12 points from Malia Clayburg.

CAM got 8 points from senior Eva Steffensen in the loss. Ruthie Rich finished with 7 points, all in the second half.

The Cougars now sit at a 2-1  record on the early season and will travel to Woodbine next Tuesday night. Coach Wollum expects his team to have a stronger defense for Tuesday’s game.

Coon Rapids-Bayard now looks at a 2-0 record and will next travel to West Harrison on the 5th.
