Dubuque hydraulic business building destroyed by fire

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters in eastern Iowa say no one was hurt in an overnight fire that destroyed a Dubuque commercial building. Firefighters called to the Link Hydraulic building found the structure fully engulfed in flames when they arrived just after 4 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters called for backup from nearby fire departments to help control the blaze, as crews also battled sub-freezing temperatures and snow.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters warned motorists to use caution traveling on Highway 20 eastbound running past the business while crews were still on the scene.

Parts of Iowa, Nebraska bracing for more wintry weather

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Much of Iowa and Nebraska are bracing for another wintry blast overnight into the weekend, with parts of eastern Iowa already under a winter storm warning. The National Weather Service says a winter storm is expected to drop as much as 8 inches of snow in east-central Iowa, including the cities of Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Muscatine and Davenport. The weather service says snow will start falling by late Thursday afternoon, continuing throughout the day Friday. Most of Iowa is under a winter weather advisory, where 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected.

The weather service has placed most of Nebraska under a hazardous weather outlook for Thursday night into Friday, with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected, as the storm system moves southeast across the state.

Car crashes into Creston Fareway store loading dock

A woman who apparently blacked out at the wheel, crashed her 2014 Honda Accord into the loading dock of the Creston Fareway Store, Wednesday morning. Creston Police say 74-year old Mary Jo Dorgan, of Creston, complained of pain following the crash that happened at around 11-a.m. She was transported by her husband to the Greater Regional Medical Center, in Creston, to be checked out. Dorgan was westbound on Montgomery Street and began to turn left onto Walnut, when her car ran off the road and into the loading dock. She told police she didn’t remember what happened.

Damage to her vehicle amounted to $3,000. The report did not indicate the extent of damage, if any, to the loading dock. No citations were issued.

Corning couple arrested in connection w/Child Endangerment Wed. night; plus 2 other arrests in Adams County

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County arrested a couple from Corning at around 10:40-p.m., Wednesday, in connection with a case of Child Endangerment. Bradley William Herring, of Corning, was arrested on felony charges of Child Endangerment resulting in Serious Injury, and Willful Injury. Amanda Jo Herring, also of Corning, was arrested for Interference with Official Acts, and Compounding a Felony. Both charges are aggravated misdemeanors. The pair were being held in the Adams County Jail without bond, until seen by a Magistrate.

Early Wednesday morning, Adams County Deputies were dispatched to a reported vehicle in the ditch near 272nd and Highway 25. Upon further investigation, Clinton White, of Afton, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. White was also cited for Open Container, Failure to Maintain Control, and having No Insurance.

And, at around 10:20-a.m. Wednesday, a traffic stop in Adams County on Highway 25 near 272nd Street, resulted in the arrest of Christene Deason, of Mt. Ayr.  Deason was arrested for Driving Under Suspension.

Red Oak man arrested Wed. night on felony warrant

Police in Red Oak, late Wednesday night, arrested a man wanted on a Felony warrant for Willful Injury causing Bodily Injury. Authorities say 24-year old Devon Ray Briggs, of Red Oak Oak, was arrested at around 10:40-p.m. in the 100 block of W. Coolbaugh Street. Briggs was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

Winter Weather Advisory (Update 3:50-a.m., 2/8/18)

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9-p.m. (tonight, 2/8) until 9-a.m. Friday, for the following area Counties in the KJAN listening area: Guthrie-Dallas-Carroll and Crawford.

Snow is expected to redevelop across much of northern Iowa this afternoon and spread slowly southward into central Iowa Thursday night and early Friday morning. In addition, northeast winds will increase late tonight into early Friday morning with
patchy blowing and drifting snow expected, especially in rural, open areas.

Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected.

Winter Weather Advisory for counties shaded in purple.

Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the morning commute on Friday. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republicans in the Iowa Senate have approved $46 million in new funding for K-12 education for the upcoming budget year. The GOP-controlled chamber voted 29-21 Wednesday night for the measure. It must now bounce back to the Republican-controlled House, which voted 57-40 Wednesday morning for $32 million in new funding. Lawmakers will need to agree on a total before it can reach Gov. Kim Reynolds’ desk. The Senate approved an extra $14 million for various expenses.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have arrested a Sioux City man in the stabbing death of a man last summer. The Sioux City Journal reports a Woodbury County grand jury in November indicted 44-year-old Jeremy Lillich on one count of involuntary manslaughter. He was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Woodbury County Jail. He’s charged in the June 3 stabbing death of 21-year-old James R.D. Purcell, of Sioux City.

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified human remains found in a burned-out car in southeast Iowa. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said Wednesday the remains found Saturday were of 63-year-old Sharon Kay Moritz, of Northwood. A farmer found the burned-out car in Davis County, southeast of the small community of Pulaski. Deputies responded and found the human remains inside. The car was a 2006 white Chevrolet Impala registered to Moritz. Investigators say Moritz has family in the Davis County area.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury has convicted a man of voluntary manslaughter in a shooting on the Iowa City pedestrian mall that left one person dead and two others injured. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the jury on Wednesday found Lamar C. Wilson guilty of voluntary manslaughter, two counts of assault with the intent to inflict serious injury and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. Wilson didn’t dispute he fired five bullets on the crowded pedestrian mall but said it was in self-defense.

Loyola Chicago tops Drake 72-57 for 20th win

CHICAGO (AP) — Cameron Krutwig scored 17 points, Clayton Custer added 14 and Loyola Chicago pulled away from Drake 72-57 on Wednesday night. The pair combined for 22 points in the second half when the Ramblers (20-5, 10-3 Missouri Valley Conference), who led 32-28 at the break, made 4 of 9 3-pointers, shot 57 percent (17 of 40) from the field and had 12 of their 21 assists with just one turnover.

The win gave Loyola its second 20-win season in four years but it is the first time the Ramblers hit 20 wins before a conference tournament since 2007, the last year they won 10 league games (in the Horizon League). Loyola reached double figures in conference wins for just the fifth time in school history.

Nick McGlynn and Reed Timmer both had 16 points for the Bulldogs (13-13, 7-6).

Lohaus leads Northern Iowa past Bradley 74-65

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Wyatt Lohaus scored a career-best 25 points and Northern Iowa snapped a three-game skid, beating Bradley 74-65 on Wednesday. Lohaus was 7 of 11 from the field including six 3-pointers for the Panthers (12-13, 4-9 Missouri Valley Conference). Klint Carlson added 12 points and led with nine rebounds. Bennett Koch had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lohaus hit his first 3-pointer early in the half to put the Panthers up by two and they never trailed before intermission, holding on to lead 32-30 at the break.

Bradley surged 18-10 to open the second half and Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye’s layup put the Braves (17-9, 7-6) on top 48-42 with 13:19 to play. Lohaus led a 17-4 run after that, draining three 3-pointers and a jumper, and the Panthers led 59-52 with 7:52 left and they cruised from there.

Lautier-Ogunleye finished with 19 points for the Braves who have lost the last two after winning four straight.
