No. 15 Michigan overcomes Iowa in OT 77-71 in Big Ten Tourney

Sports

March 1st, 2018 by admin

NEW YORK (AP) — Duncan Robinson made Michigan’s only field goal in overtime, a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:15 left, and the 15th-ranked Wolverines survived foul trouble and poor shooting to beat Iowa 77-71 on Thursday to advance to the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Wolverines (25-7) face fourth-seeded Nebraska on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

Michigan was 3 for 19 from 3-point range and Robinson made all of them. His OT 3 put Michigan up 72-70, and the Wolverines made just enough free throws to hold off the Hawkeyes (14-19), who got a basket from Luka Garza on their first overtime possession and not another one.

Michigan was 18 for 32 from the free-throw line, but Robinson made two with 10 seconds left to make it 76-71.

Jordan Bohannon made a 3 off the dribble with 16.3 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 67 for Iowa, which trailed for much of the second half.

Michigan’s leading scorers, Moe Wagner and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, were both saddled with foul trouble. Wagner fouled out with 4:37 left, having played only 15 minutes and scoring 11 points. Abdur-Rahkman fouled out with 2:34 left in overtime, having scored nine points in 22 minutes. The scoring burden Thursday fell to Charles Matthews, who led the Wolverines with 16 points.

Tyler Cook and Luka Garza scored 13 points apiece for Iowa.

The Wolverines trailed 40-35 at halftime and had allowed the Hawkeyes to shoot 55 percent from the field.

Michigan managed to regain the lead early in the second half, but the Wolverines did not make a 3 until 9:30 was left in the second half and that kept them from pulling away.

Wagner picked up his fourth foul with 9:52 left — a call that stoked the ire of the many Michigan fans at the Garden — on what turned out to be a three-point play for Ryan Kriener. That cut Michigan’s lead to 53-51. Finally, Robinson found the range from deep. First, the senior dropped in a 3 from the right corner, holding the follow-through for a beat, to make the score 56-51. Michigan had missed its first 12 3-point attempts.

On Michigan’s next possession, Robinson swished a 3 from up top with 7:45 left to push the lead to eight.

Michigan is 11-0 in its opening Big Ten tournament games under coach John Beilein.

Iowa women dominate early, holds of Northwestern 55-45

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Makenzie Meyer had 13 points, Megan Gustafson 12 and fifth-seeded Iowa used a dominant first quarter to defeat 12th-seeded Northwestern 55-45 on Thursday in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

The Hawkeyes (24-6) will meet top-seeded and 13th-ranked Ohio State in Friday’s first quarterfinal.

Meyer opened the game with a 3-pointer and had three in the first quarter as the Hawkeyes raced to a 22-1 lead as the Wildcats went 0 for 15 from the field.

Northwestern (12-19) trailed by 11 at the break and got as close as five in the fourth quarter.

Lindsey Pulliam, who scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter for Northwestern, made it 47-42 after back-to-back jumpers with less than four minutes to go. Alexis Sevillian, who had all nine of her points in the fourth, answered with a clutch 3-pointer and Northwestern missed its last five shots to finish the game at 27 percent.

Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah had 17 rebounds for the Wildcats, the fourth-highest total in a Northwestern tournament game.

School districts could share social workers under new legislation

News

March 1st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa House has voted to give Iowa school districts with arrangements to share staff — like a superintendent — the authority to hire a licensed social worker who’d work with students in both districts. Representative Jacob Bossman, a Republican from Sioux City, was just elected to the House last month.

“There is a fiscal impact, however I believe that is a small price to pay to ensure our youth in Iowa public schools have access to the mental health services that so many desperately need,” Bossman says. The bill does not require that schools hire a social worker. “This isn’t something that every school district is going to pursue, but it provides one more option to that access and I thik that’s something that we all should strongly support,” Bossman says.

Representative Phil Miller, a Democrat from Fairfield who served on his community’s school board, is another first-year legislator who won his seat in a special election.  “Having a social worker in a school is a very good idea, especially today when we have lots of things that our students are faced with,” Miller says. Representative Marti Anderson, a Democrat from Des Moines, is a licensed social worker who served as president for the National Association of Social Workers chapter in Iowa.

“I have seen the wonderful work that school social workers do,” Anderson said, “and I urge the body to adopt this and make that good service available to more of our children.” The bill passed the House on a 96-to-zero vote. It now goes to the senate for consideration.

Four NW Iowa cities now report counterfeit cash being passed

News

March 1st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Another community in northwest Iowa is reporting the appearance of counterfeit cash. A bank and a business in Le Mars were both passed bogus bills in the past few weeks. Fakes have also turned up recently in Spencer, Storm Lake, and Graettinger. Le Mars Police Chief Kevin Vande Vegte, says everyone should know some key ways to distinguish real from fake currency.

“The bills will have a watermark so if you tip them, you should see a shadow of a different picture in there,” Vande Vegte says. “The bills will have a change of color, so looking straight on a particular point in the bill will be a constant color if you turn it at a 45-degree angle.” One of the recent incidents in Le Mars involved a fake 50-dollar bill, which was clearly a counterfeit, while the other case involved a 100-dollar bill that was marked “For Motion Picture Use Only.”

Unfortunately, he says that movie currency looks realistic and is readily available over the internet. The chief says anyone who handles money should keep a sharp eye out for the counterfeits. “A big one you can’t forget is just the feel of the bill,” Vande Vegte says. “How does it feel in your hand? Does it feel too heavy? Does it feel too light? When you hold a bill in your hand, you should feel ridges because the U.S. Mint puts raised ink on those bills.”

Magic marker-style pens that are made specifically for checking the authenticity of bills are a must for any business that takes in a lot of big bills. “You can buy these readily online and they’re inexpensive,” Vande Vegte says. “In fact, we looked yesterday and there was a 5-pack for $7, so you can jump right on the internet and buy them.” The chief says he believes the two recent cases in Le Mars are -not- connected as the types of fake cash passed were so different.
